  1. I really like the positive encouragement about all this SoldierNurse22. I definitely need to start somewhere and see where I fit in the OB world. Who knows, maybe I might like L&D later on. You brought a good point about trying L&D out and see if I like it. It wouldn't hurt to try it out and hope to transfer to PP once there's opening. I do like variety sometimes and I can see why L&D is an intense place to work. I'm just worried about getting burnt out especially with stress and staffing. I'm sure it comes with time to overcome it.
  2. I guess you're right about maybe giving it a try and see if this is something I really want to go into. I feel bad that if I decide that it isn't for me, I wasted their valuable time in training me. Can you explain what sorts of things that makes the environment very intense and fast paced?
  3. Hey fellow nurses. I am having a hard time deciding what is best for me right now. I am currently working in Medsurg (3+ years) and am ready to move on. I have always wanted to work in postpartum but it seems like my dream hasn't been granted yet. I have recently interviewed with the manager at my current hospital for a postpartum position but it didn't seem like she wants to hire me. I have been emailing her a few times but to no response. It has been difficult for me to apply elsewhere as well since I don't have any OB background. I noticed that my hospital currently have openings for L&D. Do you guys think I should interview for that position? They will invest in training me, but I'm just a little worried about making it til the end since this area is a bit more challenging than postpartum. Not to mention, it is outside of my comfort zone. I read a lot of posts on here that made me worried and want to steer away from L&D. I really hope there are more positives in L&D that will get me interested in the area. I have always wanted to work in OB, but I really need to get my foot into the door somehow. I have always thought starting out in postpartum will be better. Should I start in L&D and move my way down to postpartum later on? I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks for reading my dilemma.
  4. I'm happy that you got into your dream job!! Did you transferred within your hospital? What kind of questions did the manager asked that helped you land your job? I have an interview in a few days and just need some pointers. Thanks!
  5. Hi OP. Just wanna follow up with you on any luck with finding your dream job?
  6. congrats on your new job!! :) May I ask, did you apply within your hospital? Any tips on applying to L&D that made you stood out? I too am an medsurg RN trying to get into L&D.
  7. Spectator, what made your application stood out? Did you have any work experience or preceptorship in OB? Should I be getting my NRP or STABLE certifications? I don't have any experiences except from clinicals. I feel like every time I apply for an OB position, HR won't look at my application since I don't have any experience. My hospital isn't hiring any L&D nurses Nor training nurses either :/
  8. Alinarn, I would suggest you to stick with your current position for a year before consider transferring. It shows to managers that you are capable of sticking around in the long run. I know medsurg isn't the ideal place to work, but it does give you a sense of security should anything happen in the future (e.g. hiring freeze, hospital strike etc.) A lot of hospitals prefer nurses to have at least a year of acute care experience for hire. Don't risk losing that full year and regret it. If your manager hires new grads and have them leave after a few months, then there must be something wrong with the manager or the management. Suck it up for a year and you will be in the safe zone
  9. Hi everyone. I'm a nurse with 2 years of medsurg experience under my belt and would like to switch into OB. It's been a long dream of mine since I got my license but was sad that I didn't get into a training program related to mother and baby. Can anyone who were in medsurg or in any specialties give me some tips on getting in? Any hospitals that you know offers training programs for non-new grads? Any tips/comments is greatly appreciated. I am sick of working in medsurg!! HELP!!!
  10. I heard Total Care from Craigslist is always hiring and they are willing to take new grads. Problem is they only give you a day of training. Have you tried looking for jobs outside of acute care like clinics, surgery centers? Be open about the possibilities especially being a new grad. You will eventually get your dream job once you get some experience. Try volunteering at a hospital and network with the nurses and nurse managers. I know some people get hired easily just by talking to the workers there.
  11. Thanks for your input. I greatly appreciate you responding as I am continuing to research more about the area. I'll try to avoid Federal Way and the east part of Tacoma. I heard University Place is a good place, maybe I'll check it out. Thanks a bunch.
  12. Hey all. I just took a job at a hospital in Tacoma and would like your inputs about the area. Where is the safest area to live in? I heard some crazy stories about Tacoma and am a little worried since I'm the only person living out on my own. I don't want to live too far away from work since I know that traffic can get fairly bad. Your suggestions is greatly appreciated.
  13. I think that was an error on their end. Did you ever heard anything back from them bbailey?
  14. Did anyone applied for the RN residency program posting yesterday?
  15. Still waiting too. I thought they would be contacting people already.
