I finally got my nursing degree at the age of 35. Prior to that I had a lot of jobs, waitress, call centre, retail sales, flight attendant and now nursing. I work in the OR now and all those other jobs prepared me somewhat for my new career....

As an ex flight attendant I can honestly say some people who get on planes often leave their minds, and their manners at the gate. To get great service follow the 3 p's. Be punctual (no the plane will not wait for you, unless you are the Captain scheduled to fly it), Be polite (would you grab someone's ass, breasts or whistle to get their attention on the ground?) and say Please. Goes a long way to making the flight enjoyable for all.... Ps.. If the flight attendants have asked you to move out of your aisle seat so that they can get to the unconscious, not breathing man seated in the window, don't argue, just do it!!! And don't ask me for a complimentary bottle of scotch for being moved.... while I'm busy doing CPR!!! Look around buddy- I'm a little busy right now......

I too am a new OR nurse, well 8 months along... I have good and bad days. "Big personalities" are in every workplace, however when confidence is low it can really get you down! I empathize and know how you feel. It does get better, once the surgeon sees you do something well they are more likely to let you scrub again, so my advice is just keep on going, it does get better!! I've gone home and cried a few times but am sticking it out for at least a year to see if it's for me. Don't be afraid, to ask questions, to get involved and to learn new things. I am an EN (med and IV endorsed) and have been since last March. I work in a busy OR alongside lots of EN's and RN's. Guess what? Our job is exactly the same! The only difference is the pay and the level of knowledge needed to get to where we are. Have I run into discrimination, you bet but it's few and far between. Most of the RN's are happy to teach a newbie the role of scrub/scout even if I am an EN, after all they are having enough trouble keeping nurses in theatre......
