Pushing Instructions
This might be a silly question, but how do you educate/instruct your pts. on pushing? I have been on L&D for a year and I still feel like I could say things differently. I work at a rural hospital where most have epidurals, legs in stirrups... etc. The dr. comes in for the last few pushes saying "push down like you are constipated" One Dr. hinted that I could be more clear in my pushing instructions (which I would agree) but left it at that. Any suggestions???

on call hours for L&D
We have to sign up durning regular shift hours. Since I work 1900-0730, I have to sign up for times slots within those hours. I live an hour away so driving in at 2am is exhausting and a little scary at times. I would love to tack on 4 hours at the begining or end of my shift but we cant. I agree, you cant make plans to do anything else while you are on call. So I sit at home waiting/dreading on the phone call while my family goes on without me. When you have 40+ hours to sign up for, you know you will give up at least one weekend day to do it. That is usually what is needed and will fit your schedule. What really makes me mad is when I get called in and floated to another department, especially depts. that do not have manditory call themselves.:angryfire

on call hours for L&D
lol...Yeah, we get a whole $1.75 to be on call. I understand that they have to do SOMETHING, but I was told 8-12 hours when I was hired not 44 EXTRA hours. I cant do it anymore, I wont do it! I too have a life, a family, and friends that I have neglected for way too long.

Interview on Monday
I graduated with my BSN last May. I have been working as an OB nurse for the last year. I love my job, but the I have over an hours drive to get there. The drive, along with 28 hours of manditory on call hours a month is killing me. I was called for an interview for a head district nurse position. I was wondering if I have enough experience as a nurse to take this job if offered? What do you all think? Secondly, I have been reading through past threads looking for interview help. I have been reading up on various issues such as ADHA, epi pens, DM etc as suggested by other post. My questions is: What questions should I be asking? Finally, I am being interviewed by a teacher, 2 LPN's that currently work in the district ( and were turned down for the head district nurse job) , and the superintendent. I have never been interviewed by a group. I am very intimidated. I have 2 bachelors degrees (Psych & Nursing), my RN, and one year of experience. The LPN's have been there for sometime now. If I get the job, I will be over the LPN's. I cant imagine being turned down for a job that you have experience in, only to have to pick your next boss who has limited experience. Does this sound like a bad situation? Thanks for listening. I am confused.

New OB Nurses, Grads and Students, Please Feel Free to post your questions here:
Hi, I am Tae. I graduated in May 2006 with my BSN and I went right to work on an OB floor in a level 3 perinatal center. I did my OB clinical in a very small rural hospital where it seemed as if all pts. were happy, healthy, and problem free. There were not the health issues that I am dealing with now. We have a lot of sick, high risk women having babies. I had no idea what I was getting my self into. In fact, the hospital I did my clincals at send all their pts. who are not happy, healthy and problem free to the hospital I now work at :chuckle What a wake up call. Anyway, I had a wonderful orientation but there was so much information to learn. Is there a book or some kind of reference any of you can recommend. My maternal-health textbook from school only briefly covers some of the bigger issues. I learn and remember better when I read it for myself. The nurses are great, but when I hear a test that needs to be ordered, or a result, or diagnosis that I am not familiar with, I want to read about it. Then I will remember for next time. It keeps my head spinning but I have to admit I LOVE this job! Thanks for any suggestions.

265 questions! I feel sick!
Take my word for it, you would not feel any better if you walked out after 75. When my computer shut off after 75 this morning I completely freaked! I wanted MORE questions believe it or not. I just did not feel like I proved myself yet. So, like they keep telling me we have to calm down and hope for the best. Good Luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too am freaking out
I have been reading everyones post and it seems as if they freaked out for nothing:) (I am so happy for you) But that is not reassuring me. I took the nclex this morning. It shut off after 75 questions and I sat there totally stunned. I could not move. My legs were jello. I left crying like a baby. It felt like I got a lot of teaching questions. Is that a good sign? I also had several priority questions. I had one calculation that I know I got wrong. I think I got at least 5 check all that apply. Which looking back I think I missed all of them. Is it true that getting 75 question means you most likely passed. I am also sure I got the last question right. Does that mean anything? I am so sick to my stomach. My friend seemed to get different kinds of questions like "what's the approprite way to..." and took 150 questions. I just don't know what to think. Any thought?

Job interview in the OR
Thank you. The interview went well and she seemed thrilled that I thought so highly of her staff. She asked me if I wanted to spend a day shadowing a circulating nurse. I said yes and we scheduled a day. I think that is a good sign. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Job interview in the OR
Hi! I am a new grad and I have an interview in the OR TODAY! Does anybody have any advice? I have had interviews for other positions and didn't have too much trouble putting things into words. I have observed in the OR during clinical rotations and loved being there. It is such a different kind of nursing. I know I am going to be asked "Why do you want to work in the OR". I just can't explain why. I live in a small town and this is a small hospital. The staff in this OR was just amazing to students and it was the only department that seemed to want to teach. I don't know if these are good reasons for someone to want to hire me. I have other offeres but this is where I want to be. What about OR nursing draws you all to it? Thanks so much for you help!!!!

Just hired on Med/surge
Thanks for the advice/pep talk. I only hope I come out as confident as you seem to have. I guess worrying about it is not going to get me anywhere.
