Want to study via skype for NCLEX-RN?
Thank you Weirdnurse :) I did actually see that post-but there looks to be a lot of people involved. I was hoping to find one or two other people. I find that studying with more than that can get to be a bit too much. But thanks again :thankya:

should i pursue a career in nursing?
My first question to you would be do you have interest in learning how the human body functions? If you have absolutely no interest in studying such things, nursing school will probably be a struggle….to say the least. No matter what you go to school for you have to have some interest in what you will be studying. So ask your self what it is that you enjoy learning about and go in that general direction. Chemistry is something that you do have to understand when you are in nursing. This is probably why your nursing advisor was discouraging. You need to understand certain concepts and formulas from chemistry that will come back to haunt you when you are in A&P, pharm, med surg etc. Chemistry can be an intimidating class when first starting out. Your best bet would be to take this with some other easier courses because it doesn’t always come easy to most people. It does take a little bit of work. Having a great teacher always helps. You can always look into getting a tutor. Most schools offer them for free. What Penumothorax said about you getting your CNA license and putting yourself in the environment is great advice! This will tell you more than anything if this is what you want to do for the rest of your life. As far as math goes-I too have never been great at math. I still graduated with my BSN and cant say that the math held me back in any way. What mattmrn2013 had to say is all very correct. I probably would have given a similar answer if I was still in school. Nursing school can be a bit overwhelming at times. However, take most of what was said with a grain of salt. If someone would of told me all of that before I started, I may never have started. Yes, it is true that all nurses are stressed for the very reasons that are listed. But it is more overwhelming reading that than it is going through it. You will learn how to manage your time. Like any job, it has its good days and its bad. It is also true that you wont have much, if any, of a life while in school. But each semester prepares you for the next. Im not sure how we do it, but most of us make it through. Personally what got me through school were my nursing school friends. Its great to get together to study and work on your clinical work together. That way you can get stuff done and not feel like you’re going through all this alone. Chances are good you will make a couple of new best friends in nursing school. No one will ever understand what you are going through like them. Best wishes in whatever path you choose! No matter what you decide to do its going to take hard work and dedication. So make sure that it is something you enjoy J

Kaplan NCLEX prep classes
Everyone is different. I used Kaplan twice and failed both times with 265 questions. I followed their plan exactly and got anywhere from 60-70% on their tests (where they claim you should be before you take the test) and still failed. However, I have read about people who have done worse than me on the tests and still passed their NCLEX. Personally I think that the classes are a waist of time and money. They do however have some great advice about answering NCLEX style questions. But all this information can be found in their book that can be purchased for like 15-35$ depending on where you purchase it. The book explains how to answer questions, contains sample tests that are very much like NCLEX, and comes with a CD that also has practice tests. All questions have rationales as to why each answer is right or wrong. Personally I would say save your money and just buy the book. You won’t get much more from the classes than you would just reading the book. I am glad that Kaplan is something that my school paid for. Otherwise I would be real upset! Just an FYI: If you feel you need a refresher as far as content goes, Kaplan is VERY POOR at this. Hurst online is wonderful for content review. I read great reviews about it on here, so i decided to get it and love it! Or if you want to save money, you could just do something like Saunders. Personally I had a hard time focusing on Saunders because it was just too much information. But hey! It works just fine for some people.

Those who have passed Nclex...I would love to hear your encouraging story
Hi all, I have failed my Nclex twice now . I know this may sound weird, but I love to read all the posts of people passing. It gives me encouragement to keep going. I wanted to start a thread where people post their stories. My hope is to have a spot that gives encouragement to all of us who are studying for NCLEX. I know many people have posted their stories on here already. I just thought it might be nice to have a single spot filled with encouraging stories

Here's a Question I don't Understand...
I was thinking the same thing as euphoria02. Since you already know that she probably has poor nutrition because of the SE of chemo, it would be useless to assess her daily food intake because you already know it is probably low. Thus, this wont help this situation any. By assessing what her favorite foods are you are on the right track of possibly getting her to eat more. Thus fixing what the problem is.

RN nclex exam
Have you looked into Hurst? I failed my test twice now. Both times I used Kaplan and Saunders. Despite the fact that I failed, I do believe that both of these reviews are good. However, I realize now that my problem is content. Each time I went into the test I felt like i knew a little bit about a lot of stuff. I kept telling my self that I cant possible know everything. Although this is true, you cant know everything, You have to have a good understanding of some major content areas. As they say, "you should be able to have an educated conversation on certain topics". If I am not able to do this how am I going to be able to answer questions? Even more important, how am I ever going to be able to pratice as a safe nurse if i cant critically think during a life threatening situation. Saunders is good for content, but it was just too much content for me. It helped me understand things in a general sence, but I did not walk away from it thinking in terms of the "big picture". That was my major down fall..... I am now taking the Hurst review and find that things are clicking, and i am able to see the larger scope of things. It brought back the critical thinking skills that I used, and have lost since school. My study plan: I am watching the videos several times so things click and stick. When I am done with individual areas (cardiac, renal, fluid and electrolyte, etc, etc) I skim my saunders in that area and then take the saunders test in those areas. I also plan on doing LaChairty questions in the same content area once I am done. Once I feel I am able to critically think about content, I plan on looking over Kaplan stratigies to to refresh how NCLEX wants things answered. I also hope to do the Qbank questions. There is also a random fact thread on here that i plan on looking over. I think it will help refresh my memory on some little stuff that is important. We each have individal reasons as to why we did not pass. I think sitting down, and being honest with our selves as to why we are not passing helps. Some people have problems with content, some people dont understand how to read and answer NCLEX style questions, and some have probs with anxiety which inhibits there higher level thinking. So I say to you, think about what it is that is causing you to not pass and go from there. I wish you the best of luck! May both of us be successful on our next attempt!!

Is it possible to work while attending RN school?
I graduated with my BSN. For me personally, and those I went to school with, it was very hard to have a job during nursing school. Jr and Sr year it was probably the most difficult to have a job. During this time you not only have all your class work and tests, but you also have clinicals (which is a part time job in itself 8-24hrs/wk), and your clinical paper work (which is usually about 20-40 pages long). Thus, in one wk, you may have to study for 1-3 tests; go to clincials; go to classes; write and hand in clinical paper work; and if its a real bad wk you may also have a speach to give, a paper to write, or both. However each school is different. Some schools dont even have clinicals (not sure how they can get away with that one). Either way, nursing school is intense. As they say " You will eat, sleep, and breath nursing". There will be many nights where you only get a couple hours of sleep. If you NEED a job,I highly recommend working during your off time as much as possible and save so you have some money put away for the school year. What was left of my student loans also went to help me live and pay my bills. I say give it a try and see how well you do. Worst case scinerio, you ask for less hours. Its better to have the job and realize you need to cut down on hours, then to not have a job and realize you need one. Sorry...Its late at night and I realize im probably all over the place. I hope i helped a little though. I wish you the best of luck in school. Its tough while you are in it, but you actually kinda miss it when you're done.
