When I was looking for my first NP job, my #1 priority was finding a FQHC so that I could apply for loan repayment. I ended up moving 17 hours from home to work in a very small, very rural critical access hospital. Now, I'm looking to move on and am having trouble narrowing down a location I'd enjoy. I've never traveled, and have only lived in 2 places - where I grew up and where I'm living now for work. My priorities have shifted to looking for work in an urgent care, possibly an ER, and in a place that is neither a huge city, nor so rural. I'm 3 hours from a Target, Starbucks, etc. and I'm over that. But, I don't know where to start my search. I'd obviously like to go somewhere that pays well and has a reasonable cost of living. And, better weather (I'm in the US right on the Canadian border) would be nice, but is not a requirement. I thought I'd take some time this summer to visit some potential locations I'd be interested in living prior to looking for work, but, as I've never really been anywhere else, I'm not sure where to start. Can anyone steer me in the right direction for starting the search? I work in a FPA state and am not sure how big of a deal that would be to me in looking for a new place since I don't know any different. Help!

In her review book, Leik recommends registering for both exams if you've got a job lined up following graduation. So, I took her advice and registered for both of them. I graduated last week and subsequently have taken and passed the AANP exam! I have not gotten my eligibility to test letter from ANCC, and I'm trying to decide if I should keep my registration for the exam, or cancel it. Cosmetically, I like the "BC" title better than "C", but not sure I like it enough to study research, policy, etc. Is there any benefit to taking both? Does anyone have a preference for one or the other when it comes to renewing the certification in the future?

I am an FNP student and will graduate this December. I had an interview last week with a family practice clinic in east central Illinois and received this offer from them today: -Starting salary of $83,000 per year -15 days (3 weeks) vacation -1 week CME -5 holidays -401K plan -Malpractice insurance (with tail coverage) -All license renewal fees -5% net collections They are a federally qualified health center with a high score, so I am hoping I would receive loan repayment that way. I would also like to ask for moving expenses, as this site is not local to me. How does this offer look to you guys? This is my first offer so I'm not too sure how/what to negotiate.

Does anyone have a good app or other resource for managing hypertension and diabetes mellitus? I graduate at the end of this year and feel very uncomfortable managing these 2 conditions.

Yes, one of our ED physicians diagnosed a pt with this after consulting the university. The guy was in the ER 8 times in 7 days. He fit the diagnosis to a T.

Oh that is good to hear. I'm glad there isn't a book to buy - it's all very expensive. I paid my $650 deposit. I'm assuming I'll receive more emails on what to expect next?

Have you heard much about the biology course, Tasha? Just wondering what it's like. I didn't know there was no textbook for it. I finished statistics yesterday and scanned my stuff in and emailed it to my admissions rep last night. Should I expect a response in regards to having fulfilled the stats requirement?

I've been prepared to pay the $650, but I had no idea I'd have to take this biology bridge course until yesterday. The admission rep was telling me about being in the May cohort this and that yesterday and that biology was taken alongside the nursing classes, but when I read the emails I called him back today, and as it turns out I have to take biology first and can't start the program until September....AND I have to pay for biology out of pocket since I won't be enrolled at least half time. Kind of upset about that.

Tasha - Will my $650 go toward my biology class then, do you think? I'm literally getting ready to put that on my credit card right now. Ugh!

Terese - I bet you get your acceptance this week. They're getting decisions really quickly. I think they look at the whole application, and I don't think they would deny you admission based on the length of your statement. I'm rooting for you!

I suppose I may have to take out a personal loan, but I hate to do that. It's a lot of money to come up with. Oh also, was the money due by the start of the class? I assume it was?

Thanks Therese! I was hoping to start the program in May, but having to take this biology bridge course is going to push it back clear until September 15. Biology starts on May 19th though and lasts 8 weeks.

Has anyone had to take the Biology bridge course and can tell me how much it costs?
