  1. I am in a Masters level course and need to write a paper on Health Disparities. Please answer the following questions to the best of your ability and include the region of the country and the area of nursing you work in. Also please include your years experience as a RN and level of education. Thank you so much. 1) To what extent do you think or see racial/ethnic minorities (as compared to white Americans) a) treated differently in the health care system b) receive lower quality health care? 2) What are three reasons that you think health care for racial/ethnic minorities may differ? On a scale of 1-4 (1=very important, 4= not at all important) rate the importance of the following statements in ending inequality in health care. (Feel free to add comments also) 1)Health care providers (HCP) should work with minority communities regarding how to get the best health care and how to best participate in treatment decisions. 2)HCPs should take classes about how to best communicate and treat patients of different ethnic backgrounds 3)Hospitals should be required to provide interpretors for non English speaking patients 24/7. 4) Doctors, Hospitals and Insurance companies should be penalized for track records of treating minorities differently. 5)We should strive in this country to increase the number of minorities working in health care. 6) Incentives should be provided to HCPs who demonstrate exception care regarding minority patients. THANK YOU!!!!!!
  2. Hi, I'm presently in a BSN program in SC. I am writing a professional issues paper and I wanted to research a point. It is my understanding that the majority of facilities across the US do not differentiate their starting salaries in regards to the level of preparation of the RN (Diploma/ADN/BSN) given that everything else is equivalent. Please tell me what your experience has been. Thank you.
  3. I am in SC, but was in Manchester NH as recently as 2001. My husband started his nursing school at NHTI in Concord then transferred to NHCTC in Manchester and graduated from a ADN program here in SC. I will always recommend a RN program over a LPN program if it is feasible. If you can use the time to get all the pre-reqs out of the way while awaiting entrance into a RN program it is desirable. The waiting lists all over the US for ADN RN programs are terrible. If at all possible for you a 4 year BSN program is the best option, and you can usually get quicker entry. UNH-Durham and Colby Sawyer (New London) offer this in NH as well as some private Universities in Southern NH (St. Anselms and Rivier). Even if you get your LPN or ADN-RN, most all hospital systems will finance you going back to school for a BSN. I worked at Concord Hospital for a good while and I do not remember them employing many LPNs. Here in the South they are more utilized. Hope this helps. :) Darci
  4. I am in the US, but I will always encourage anyone to go into Nursing. I am not sure what a RPN is...I am guessing it is like our LPN (a practical nurse). As a RN for 12 years I have found my career to always be rewarding. It has provided security and flexibilty to me and my family. Usually in the US you start out in a general medical/surgical area, but can transfer to a variety or areas after a years experience. As a RN I have been able to work flexible hours and support my family. In the US also if you continue on with your education then you can do VERY well financially. My best friends husband is a Nurse Anesthetist and he makes over 100,000 dollars a year for 36-40 hours a week of work. Now he needed to go on to get a Masters Degree to do this, but still its not too shabby. I have been able to trade my services for summer camp tuition for my boys. I work a few days at a resident YMCA summer camp and they go for free (camp tuition is usually $600 dollars a week per child). Its fun and relatively easy work...a vacation for all. I started out as a nursing assistant and then went and got an Associate Degree RN (3 years technical college)....I am finishing my Bachelor Degree and will pursue a Masters Degree in Nursing. So I have worked my way up the ladder. I did not opt to get my LPN as it wasn't a feasible step...for one more year I could have my RN. Nursing if it is your true calling is the greatest profession on earth. You can always find a job in any part of the world really.....the language of caring is universal. Hope this helps!!! :) Darci
  5. HI....here in the US we have highly developed "travel nursing agencies". In fact I get emails all the time regarding positions out West where they are offering $35-38 dollars an hour, premium private housing and a $600-800 travel allowance. Does a similiar entity exist in the UK? My husband and I are both RNs. He has been practicing for 2 years (he was a police officer at first and decided to go back to school and change careers) and I have been for 12 yrs. His area of practice has been Emergency Trauma and for the past 6 months he has been working in Acute Psychiatric Stabilization. I have always done Maternal Child Nursing....labor/delivery/pediatrics. We really would like to come to the UK for a year....we also have 2 sons that we would bring and put them in school over there. (10 and 12 yrs old) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :) Darci
