Priority for DVT
Venodyne boots? Haha. Sequential compression devices and heparin are commonly used on the floor I work on to prevent DVTs.

I measure with my two fingers and poke right there. It's pretty high because two finger breadths is a small distance.

People who trivialize nursing
Wow! That would have gotten me upset at well. You should have put him in his place! That comment was uncalled for. I am currently in my 4th semester (one more to go!) and my significant other's brother told me the other day that he hopes his daughter doesn't grow up to be like me because "all ever do is go to school and work." Ummm hello! If he had half a brain he would know how much time and energy it takes one to go to nursing school full time, let alone keep a job while you're doing it. I know where you're coming from and anyone who has done it knows what an accomplishment it is to even get into a program. Be proud =D

I really want to succeed, but...
It is completely normal to be uncomfortable in new situations. I had a very tough professor in my second semester of nursing school but it's just because she was extremely smart and didn't want to deal with my stupidity and lack of preparedness, however, in the end I appreciated every minute of it. She taught me to think on my toes! She also taught me to research everything before asking a question. Piece of advice, don't take anything personally. If you feel you didn't do well, take a few hours to have yourself a pity party then pick yourself up and do better next time.

HELP PLEASE!
Tlblancaflor, I got the job! Yay =D Thanks guys for the advice. I ended up just giving them my official transcripts and they accepted that. The job is per diem which is good for now while I'm in school, however, because my availability is limited and they have multiple people bidding for shifts, I don't get to work as often as I would like. I probably don't need to be working any more anyway. Again, thanks guys!

Terrible clinical site!
I think I will need to look for some volunteer opportunities soon because that sounds like an awesome learning experience! I really wish that the nurses at each clinical site were given compensation for taking time to teach students. My school is a private school and we are paying $12,000 this SEMESTER (not year, semester) alone. So I'm really wishing that we were more welcomed at the hospital. It just sucks when no one wants you around BUT I won't allow that to frustrate me any more.

Terrible clinical site!
thanks everyone for your input I really appreciate it. I was just feeling extremely discouraged and frustrated when I wrote this. After giving myself a couple of days to cool off, I think I will be able to go back this week with a clear mind. I have an awesome support system and I know I shouldn't take anything personal. I understand that it is extra work for the nurse and who am I to expect them to be happy about it BUT I DO WANT TO LEARN! SO this week I will definitely be more assertive! My professor also called to let us know that we finally have computer access! This week will definitely be more successful. Again, thanks guys!! I appreciate all of your thoughts!

RN/full time firefighter
My dad's a firefighter and we were just talking about this the other day! He knows someone that was a firefighter, went to nursing school, and now works both! It's perfect. The hard part for him was the schooling. He had to take a leave of absence to complete his final semester because it was too much BUT HE DID IT!

treatment of student nurses on the floor
i am a student and i do not dismiss any nurse's attempt to reach out and teach me. i don't think experienced nurses should pigeon hole us into that category because it is not by any means conducive to our learning. i know it may sounds cliche but we are going to be working with you seasoned vets side by side. now tell me, wouldn't you rather have someone with adequate skills to be working with you? or taking care of your family? or even taking care of you!? i feel like it's part of a nurse's job to take the inexperienced under their wing and teach them the ins and outs of nursing practice. if it wasn't then they would be compensated for taking on a student. i personally want to learn so bad! i want to be a good nurse and i don't want to have to second guess myself. i am currently at a clinical site that does not welcome us at all! i have had two nurses tell me that they didn't want a student when i went to introduce myself already and it's only my second week there! it's so bad the way they treat us that i went home crying today. i'm trying so hard and it's very discouraging because i do not want to become that kind of person, not only that kind of nurse, that kind of person in general. i'm rethinking my career choice because i do not want any part of that kind of mentality.

Terrible clinical site!
I am having the worst clinical experience ever. It is making me rethink my nursing career altogether. The nurses on the floor are extremely rude and degrading toward the student nurses. I have been told twice by a nurse that they don't want to take on students and it's only my second week there! AND if a nurse does take students, they make it very clear that it's not something that they want to do. I DO NOT WANT TO BECOME LIKE THIS if this is how nurses are. If this is a requirement for becoming an RN, then I don't want any part in it. I was ready to walk out of the hospital today and quit altogether. I am so discouraged and feel completely out of place there. We haven't even been able to access the computer charts either! Idk how they expect us to give patient care if they won't even let us see the patient's chart!! I am having an overall TERRIBLE clinical experience. Thanks for reading my rant. Now I'm going to go contemplate my career choice.

Can my boss do that?
Hey all! I am currently a nursing student in Hawaii and am sumultaneously working as a CNA in a care home. I have a few questions about the working conditions in the home. I am usually scheduled to work twelve hour shifts in which I am the only caregiver for the five residents living in the home. The family that owns the care home lives in the same house so they come and go as they please. Once in a while they will pop in to check how things are going but besides that I am the only one there with he residents. Recently when receiving my pay check I've noticed that they were shorting me a couple of hours. When I asked about the diacrepancy they told me that they do not pay me while the residents are napping in the afternoon. They call this my "break" however they still need my assistance going to the restroom if they need to and I'm also monitoring them. Might I remind you that I am the only caregiver working during the twelve hour shift. Is this normal? Or is am I right to feel cheated? Also, the family expects me to wash and fold their personal laundry. They even ask the night shift workers to iron their work clothes. Finally, my last gripe is that they are completely disorganized. Last week they called me at 115 to inform me that I was supposed to work at 1, however, they didn't bother to inform me prior to that at all. Am I still obligated to drop everything I'm doing and show up for my shift when this happens?? I guess my big question is whether these things are a cause for concern and whether I should quit because I feel taken advantage of a little.

HELP PLEASE!
Hey everyone! I am currently a 2nd year nursing student and I got called for an interview at Kaiser. After the initial conversation with the recruiter, he called me back and left a message informing me to bring my current CPR certification and CNA certification. I AM NOT CNA CERTIFIED! Does anyone know if they accept 1 year in nursing school in place of CNA certification?
