Anyone Else Feel Trapped in Nursing?
i also feel trapped. School and work have taken over everything. I just got a job a patient tech at my schools hospital in june. Between 40 hr nightshifts and trying to catch up on readings. Its almost impossible. I don't have kids, spouse, etc. I'm paying for school out of pocket right now, over 7grand this semester. I have to make that same amount by jan of next year. I started saving that 7 grand at the beginning of the year too!! I'm in my 2nd year and there's so much busy work it ****** me off. Long gone of the days of just reading the text and taking tests every few weeks. I hate school, I dread going there. I just want to quit and just focus on work and making money but I dont want to be stuck as a patient tech for life. I want more out of life than being angry and p&^% off all the time:mad:

Can't get into nursing school!
I was just like you!! I had my pre-reqs done and applied and was rejected 3 times!! I had to end up completing a general sci degree, taking the ACT 3X, and finished up the rest of my co-reqs and finally got in my senior year of college!! I didn't have super great grades or high test scores. The minimum score was 19 and 2.9 but they wanted at least a 26 on the ACT and 3.6 overall gpa. I had 22 on the ACT and 3.5 gpa. I had to retake anatomy( I had a C the lst time and got B the 2nd time) and I had to retake a math class that I got a D in. Very frustrating!!! I had to take summer classes too for 3 years so I could meet requirements for other area schools. My program only took 60 people, I found out many of them retook classes too. I wasn't working a lot at the time because of time conflicts but I'm working now that I"m in nursing school, 32-40hrs as an overnight stocker. I believe everything happens for a reason though, the general sci degree took care of all my co-preqs and electives so all I have to focus on is nursing courses.:) I also had a lot of backplans, if I havent gotten in this time I would have signed up for a CNA course at the local community college or applied to LPN program. Good luck to you!!! Don't give up!! I had a lot of discouraging professors and peers. You don't need these "super perfect A+ grades to get accepted" I also wasn't involved in extracurriculars, except volunteering at the local hospital a few days a week in the summer.

Working fulltime while in school
I'm in my 2nd semester of my RN program and working 38-40hrs/wk. I work 10pm-7am Tues, thurs, fri, sat, and sun. I have class tues 10am-4pm and Thursdays 7-430pm. I'm only taking nursing classes, (only 2), I already finished a bachelors this past summer I can't seem to get any studying done, I set an alarm when I get home from work so I don't sleep the whole day, I try to get in the bed by 8am and up by 130 or 2pm so I can read, but I can only get a chapter or 2 read a day then its time to go back to bed to get ready for work. Currently I'm caught up on all my readings cause of a snow day:yes: We haven't gotten to anything too intense yet, but the semester just started. I worked the same hours last semester too but class was 9am-11am Tuesday and 9am-12pm Thursday and practice lab was right after and I didn't have to make extra trips to school. We have practice lab sessions that just started too, but they're only on mon&fri from 1-4pm. This is the clinical semester where we're learning blood draws, ivs, etc. I need the practice, I don't want to fail. Not working/cutting my hours back isn't an option( I need the money:uhoh3:), no aid from school while except for loans which I declined. I'm paying everything cash right now and I don't want to take a loan out or be any type of debit when I graduate. Maybe I'm doing this the hard way, I can't get any type of care partner/nurse tech job til I successful pass this semester. Right now I'm at night time stocker at a local grocery store in my town. Pretty good pay and consistent hours. I'm single, no kids and I'm living at home. Any advice for people in my shoes?? Where are these success stories I hear about, you know people working 2 ft jobs with husband, kids and bills and making top notch grades??I asked the clinical coordinator if she could extend hours on other days of the week, the only time that worked was Monday or wed morning from 830am-9am. My plan is to get some sort of nurse tech job starting in may when classes end working 12/hr shifts 4 days a week and I can pay off this fall and next spring. The pay at my schools hospital for nursing kids is 13.50/hr. I still have a long way to go, the program ends May 2016, thank goodness. I waited along time for this, rejection letter after rejection letter and now that it's finally here, I just want it to be over and done with..

VCU traditional fall 2013 hopefuls
I'm super happy I got in too:yeah:!!! It has been a loongg road. I've been applying since my freshmen year and I finally got in my senior year of school. I had to do a 4 year science degree, but now with nursing in the fall i still have 3 more years of school, so I can't graduate until 2016. My plan was to apply for the accelerated program but I still have 2 summer classes and I was a little wary about reapplying for regular program, but thankfully with a little push from JTCC advisor I went for it and I'm glad I did.:cat:It all been worth it!!! It also means that I only have nursing courses to focus on since my sci degree covered the rest of the co-preqs and upper electives. I also had to retake a math course and anatomy and take summer classes at reynolds for their nursing programs(LPN and RN) so just in case i was once again rejected from mcv, i could have some options available to me for other schools. That great for your prereqs!!! Get your professors that know you well to write a good letter. Don't believe all the hype of "you must have 4.0 gpa to get in" it's crap!!! A high gpa is good 3.5ish+ but it doenst have to be all A's. Also don't get discouraged if you don't get in the lst time you apply, I not trying to be discouraging or anything but they are really competitive, as long as you do well in your coursework, you'll do fine:yeah:. I got my anatomy teacher, math, and director of volunteering at Chippenham. Are you a current student at VCU?

VCU traditional fall 2013 hopefuls
my SATs sucked.lol I sent in my ACT score 22. I took SAT and ACT 3 times!!! My SAT combo reading and math was only 880. VCU looks at the whole picture though, grades, test scores, experience, and references. I think as long as you meet over the minimum requirement, you'll be fine :) How are you doing in your courses if you don't mind me asking?

Is the first semester really the hardest?
