  1. For the person who said a few pages back that alot of people are starting off with " i am NOT a smoker" and saying its because smoking is shameful is not true... Personally, i started my reply off that way only to state that i am speaking from the opposite point of view.. If no one said that, people could assume they are smokers and only replying and defending it because they smoke and dont want to be excluded. I wanted it known i am speaking as a person who doesnt even LIKE smoke... i have nothing against the smokers, just the smoke and the idea of it... i try to avoid it.. but i do not feel as though it should be used as a way of weeding out nursing school applicants. i also feel that it is WAY too hard to get into nursing school to begin with between all the pre-req requirements and testing to be done, there doesnt really need to be ANY MORE reasons for people to not get accepted especially one such as a habit/hobby. Like i said.. as long as they dont smell of smoke on their shift.. who cares..
  2. This is slightly off topic but, where are you guys getting the info for the stonybrook nursing program?!?! I applied to SUNY SB last year for a different program and got accepted but when i went to look at their nursing program its just a brief paragraph and No real admissions info or anything like that. i didnt even know they had an accelerated program?! am i just missing something or is there more info elsewhere?
  3. I took this test last December, and you should study until you feel relatively comfortable with the information. Im not sure if its like this everywhere, but i got a printout of my results the same day as i took the test. as soon as i was finished it allowed me to print the results and it gave details, like what you got in which section, how many questions wrong, right, percentage, your score in comparison to the average in the nation, as well as you vs the average in your schools program etc.
  4. I am not the best qualified to answer this, but figured i would put my 2 cents in. For one, i hate smoke. ( not smokers, just the smoke). I am in school to become an MA now, but will be going for my Rn after that, and almost all of my instructors so far ( 2 RNS and a CST) have been smokers. I have heard through the grapevine (not sure if its true) that some hospitals are making it a policy that you cannot be hired if you are a smoker and will do nicotine testing prior to being hired.. My PERSONAL opinion on this ( being as i get sick from being around the smoke) is, what you do in your spare time is up to you, but i dont feel as though you should be smoking on your shift. This is my opinion because of the fact that when you smoke, it lingers on your clothing and hair, and other people can smell it on you. If your a nurse and go into a patients room smelling of smoke, it can effect the patient negatively, with breathing problems, etc. HOWEVER, i feel that everyone should have an equal opportunity to get admitted into nursing school. I think the limited acceptace is BULL and if you pass the entrance exams and you have good grades, you should be admitted without the stupid point system they have in place. I get decent grades overall and i have a perfect 4.0 at my current school and am being told im not good enough to get into nursing school yet. I feel as though admittance should be based on performance and not health issues. I feel as though you should have the opportunity to go through nursing school no matter what your hobbies are ( smoking included) and if you are capable of passing, and getting your license then you should have the opportunity to do so.
  5. I am interested in going to nursing school, however I am currently at a business college getting a degree in Medical Assisting. Its kind of a long story how i got there, I will be graduating with an associates degree, and certification as an MA. I took my teas V test back in December of last year (2010). I was applying to the local community college for their nursing program and wont hear anything back from them until late March or so. I scored a 70 on it ( my first attempt, not much studying) and i dont feel that is good enough. The paper they printed out said its above the average for my school but somehow to me that seems awfully low. Alot of the questions on the test Ive never even heard of throughout my highschool and college career inthe science field ( all my of teachers passed over DNA and things like that saying ill never need it... guess what, i do.) Im trying to figure out what i have to do in order to get accepted to a nursing school so that when i graduate next april ill be on track. i have SOME general ed pre req's from my many years of college, but not all. Is it better to go to a Community college for an associates in Nursing and become an Rn that way, or are the hospital schools of nursing okay too? im really confused at this point, all i know is i eventually want to become an RN. Any kind of advice would be greatly appreciated.
