dshatc77, For me it'll definitely be a challenge. I have to manage to keep school a secret from work. I'm still working on changing my schedule so I can get to class by 5:00. That and I need to come up with a good excuse to be gone for orientation. All that and I'm a terrible liar! I'm sure I'll figure it out. Best of luck.

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2011
Hi everyone, I'll be attending Plant City Nights and Weekends. I can't wait to meet everyone in orientation. Also, I'm sure the classes will be a lot more organized than the administration. I'm so happy that so many of our alternates have been accepted. Best of luck to everyone.

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2011
Hi everyone, I need a little help. As orientation is on a Tuesday and a Wednesday, I need a creative (and most importantly believable) excuse to miss work for two days in the middle of the week. I know I have 'til June to come up with something, but I haven't been able to think of anything. Thanks for your help.

tthornton, maybe your hawkmail account isn't showing all of the cc'd email accounts. I had to expand the list on my yahoo account. I just noticed that there is an email on my list that has tthornton as part of the address. I'm guessing that's you. I really hope that everyone on this board gets in. It really seems like there are a bunch of great people on here. I can't wait to meet everyone.

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2011
I posted this a while ago...Hope it helps. This is cut and pasted from the Health Sciences Admissions Handbook (pages 17 and 18) regarding how students are ordered for acceptance priority. I hope this helps clear up any confusion. Ranking by grade point average: Applicants are ranked by grade point average, which is calculated using the grades of the prerequisite courses required for admission to a particular Health Sciences Program. The calculation will include prerequisite grades earned from other institutions. If an applicant has completed a required course with a Pass/Fail grade, then there will be no grade used for that course in the calculation; however, the applicant will have satisfied the requirement. Selections are made based on the highest grade point averages (GPA) and the number of seats available in each individual program. In the event there are fewer seats remaining than the number of applicants with identical GPAs, the following criteria are used to determine program admittance: 1. Applicants with the highest college cumulative grade point average in all courses taken excluding preparatory course work. 2. If students have identical college cumulative GPAs, then preference will be given to the student who has earned more total college credits. 3. Applicants for admissions consideration into the Paramedic Program will have their GPA calculations made from the grades earned in the EMT-B coursework. If there are no grades available for the EMT-B coursework, selection will be made based upon the GPA of other college level courses taken which must equal or exceed six (6) credits. If the program does not require prerequisite courses, applicants will be ranked based on their overall grade point average excluding preparatory course work. Selections will be 18 made based on the highest overall grade point averages and the number of seats available in each individual program. If two or more students have identical college cumulative GPAs, then preference will be given to the student who has earned more total college credits. Alternates are designated for each program in the event students that are selected decline. Alternates are determined in the same manner as selects to the program. If an applicant uses a CLEP score for one or more prerequisite course, the GPA will be calculated on the actual grades earned in classes, and total college credits will be calculated on actual college classes. An original copy must be attached to the application. However, the applicant will be given credit for satisfying the prerequisite. Repeating/withdrawing from prerequisite courses: Applicants may have 2 attempts per prerequisite course taken after 1997 on their academic record without being penalized. After two attempts, penalties are as follows: * Minus .2 from the prerequisite GPA for each course attempted a 3rd time * Minus .6 from the prerequisite GPA for each course attempted a 4th time * Minus 1.2 from the prerequisite GPA for each course attempted a 5th time * Minus 2.4 from the prerequisite GPA for each course attempted a 6th time Withdrawals, academic withdrawals and other non-calculated gradesare considered attempts: The State of Florida statute prohibits HCC from allowing a student to retake a course when the student has taken the course previously and received a "C" or higher grade. In addition, HCC will transfer in a course from another institution, but if the student has taken that course before and received a grade of "C" or higher, the more recent grade will not be used in any grade point calculation. startingoveragain, I have a previous degree with a low overall gpa. 2 something I think. (It took me a while to get my act together) However, my prerequisite GPA is pretty high. Depending on which math class was used, I either have all A's or all A's and one B. with a 3.8 prereq gpa you should be accepted. I don't trust the people at the desk either. You should read the handbook (available online).

Hillsborough Community College Fall 2011
My interest in anesthesia started when I was fourteen years old. I went to job shadow my dad doing surgery one day. He was an OB/GYN doc. I was fascinated by the anesthesia equipment. So much so, that my dad was a little disappointed that I was paying more attention to that than to what he was doing. When it was time for college, my parents talked me out of pursuing a medical degree. Mostly because of the issues with insurance companies. Both the high cost of malpractice insurance and the low payments that insurers forced docs to take. The kicker for me was that insurers would only pay for certain procedures. For example, patient has XYZ condition, which can be treated by ABC procedure or DEF procedure more effectively. Insurer will only pay for ABC, because it works (good enough) and is cheaper, even though DEF would be a better option for that patient. In college, I somehow found construction management. (I've always been handy and love to build) After being in this industry for over ten years, I've seen a lot of changes. Now, it seems that everything is a fight. And most of the conflicts arise due to someone's ignorance, incompetence, or foolish mistake. I've grown tired of the fighting and construction is not really that much fun for me anymore. When my second daughter was born, I realized that I liked the healthcare setting and spoke with several of the nurses in the hospital. Before we had left the hospital, I had a plan as to how I could go to school while still working and change my career. I'm still fascinated by the equipment, but now I realize that performing anesthesia means that I won't just be making patients more comfortable and unable to feel pain, but when they're "under" I'll be responsible for performing all of the body's functions for them. The money is great and the flexibility of schedule is just as good. This career change will enable me to have a job I enjoy, time to spend with my family, and money to take care of them.

My game plan is to start working as an RN and start the RN to BSN program at USF. Then on to CRNA school. I've got a long road ahead, but it should be a very bright light at the end of the tunnel!

Morpheus111, I haven't checked yet, but you can review the syllabi for each of the current nursing courses at: http://www.hccfl.edu/departments/health-science/nursing/courses.aspx Hopefully, we'll be able to get a lot of mileage out of the first semester books.
