  1. Congratulations! How is it going so far?
  2. Congrats on finishing up your prerequs! It sounds like you are almost there! Keep up the good work! I am just beginning my journey. I have a bachelor degree in business administration, but I have not taken any of the science classes, psychology, or sociology. I took medical terminology this spring and I loved it. I'm going to start my science classes this spring, after the holidays. I am hoping to find a job as a CNA that offers tuition reimbursement. My biggest setback, thus far, has been financial. I am at my aggregate loan limit for undergraduate studies, so I must pay for everything out of pocket.
  3. We should definitely stay in contact. How exciting! Good luck! I previously worked at a credit union as an accounting assistant, before becoming a stay at home mom two years ago. I am hoping to someday become an RN, but I feel that becoming a CNA first will help me decide if this is right for me. What field are you changing from?
  4. Hi! I feel exactly the same way. I am changing careers. I registered for this class this spring, but I ended up having to drop it due to not being able to afford to pay for it. I am excited to finally get started!
  5. Hi! I am starting the CNA class, on Halloween, at SWIC, in Belleville. I was hoping to meet a few people on here before I start class. Is anyone else starting the same six week CNA class?
  6. Hi! I am starting the CNA class in Belleville, Il next week. I was hoping to meet a few people on here before I start class.
  7. Hi LAJJmom! I am taking my nursing pre-reqs and start my CNA class next week. I live in the St. Louis metro area and hope to find a job in a hospital rather than LTC as a CNA. Do you have any suggestions on landing a hospital job without any experience? Or, can you recommend any particular hospital(s) that will hire a new CNA? Thanks!.....Sorry, I don't know if you live near the St. Louis area or not, I just read Mo.
  8. "Hi to all, this is my first time on here. I am currently awaiting for my cna classes to start. I am really excited to be in a field where I can help others. I have been in banking for 15 years and am not satisfied with anything that I have done. I feel that if I am working with people and really helping them and making their day a good one, then I will feel like I have done some good in this world. People who cant take care of themselves need those of us who truly care to help them. I am hoping to make some friends on here and to share what I learn and learn from you all. Hope your day has been a good one." Hi CNAMOM12!....I too worked in the financial services industry (banking) forever, 16 yrs to be exact. I have a bachelor of business administration degree and have decided to change careers. I was so bored sitting at a desk all day (working as an accouting assistant at a credit union), and felt like I was doing nothing that mattered. I start my CNA class this coming Tuesday and I am so excited, yet very nervous. I have almost dropped the class a couple of times because I am scared, but so far my excitement has outweighed the fear. I really hope to like the class and pursue an RN degree. I have started taking my pre-reqs and really hope to enjoy the CNA class.
  9. Hi! I'm pretty new to allnurses, but I love reading everyone's threads. I just began volunteering at my local hospital and I absolutely love it. I find myself wanting to do more. I was previously undecided about trying to change careers to nursing, but I am more sure of it now. Of course, I know volunteering is nothing close to what a nurse does, but I am so surprised that I love being at the hospital and I am really excited to be there. So, my question is: should I take the CNA class at my local community college this summer so that I can gain a little more insight into the real world of nursing and to be able to do more? Or, should I continue taking my pre-requisite courses for the RN program? If I take the CNA course instead of chemistry, I will have to wait 1 more year to even apply to the nursing program. But, I kinda think the CNA class will help me become more sure of my decision to change careers to nursing. What are your thoughts/advice? Would the CNA class turn me off rather than assure me? Or, is it really the best thing to do since I am still so new to this field? Is taking the CNA class worth putting off my nursing school application another year? All advice is welcome! Thank you!
  10. Thank you for advising me to volunteer at a hospital. I took your advice and did so. I have been volunteering for a little over a month now (yes it took awhile for me to decide to do it). But, to my surprise, I LOVE it!!!!
  11. Thank you sugarmagnolia and llg for your honest replies. I think I will contact my local hospitals today and ask if they have any volunteer opportunites. Thank you llg for the idea of working for a charity or foundation. I have never even thought of that.
  12. I started working in banking when I was 18. I landed a job at a large credit union and worked in the accounting department for eleven years. I unexpectedly lost my job in October 2010. I earned a Bachelor of Business Administration, and began working on a Master of Science in Accounting. But, after the first class, in which I earned an "A", I withdrew from the program. I am also tired of sitting at a desk all day and have a deep desire to help people, and to do something meaningful, and to feel like I accomplished something that matters at the end of the day. I have also considered nursing (and teaching in an elementary school), through the years. Unfortunately, my husband, sister (who is an LPN), and my friends are all very bold and tell me that they do not think nursing is for me because I am a germaphobe! I keep telling them my fears stem from the unkown, and if I learn more about what I am afraid of and face my fears I will overcome them. My desire to help people and to find fulfilling work outweighs my fear of germs. I just enrolled in a couple of the pre-requisite classes at my community college and I start in about ten days. I am nervous and excited about the classes! I am also worried that my family and friends will be right and I will somehow find that nursing is not for me. Does anyone have any experience with changing careers to nursing, and having started with a fear of germs? Did you overcome the fear? Were you happy with your decision to change careers? I would like any responses: both negative and positive experiences. Thank you!
