Help! Australian nurse wanting to nurse in Canada BC
Thankyou so much for the positive words RN_Pro. Where abouts are you with your application? I did my study in QLD at the University of Southern Queensland. To get a good report through NNAS you have to get your uni to send as detailed curriculum as possible. My uni had to send it twice because the first one wasn't lengthy enough for them. They need a very very detailed curriculum. I wasted 2 months in this process. Considering the mailing time + NNAS filing time. As for the courses, they have replaced SEC with this new NCAS assessment which is a very lengthy exam. I chickened out because I was not sure on how/where to start studying for this exam. I thought to myself that doing these 4 courses would be a definite pathway instead of preparing for the unknown. I did not want to fail in these sections after preparation and be sent to do these courses. I am aware I may sound unnecessarily scared, but this whole situation is so new and I had to make the best decisions for me. I have found that there are not many Aussie nurses in Canada to share experiences/suggestions with. Nurses from other countries have big groups/agencies guiding them step by step. Well, I am learning as I go. I went through Shock, Denial and am now in the more stable Acceptance stage. NB: I never thought about the money and recency of practice thing. You are very right about these things. I think I just got carried away with happiness that I can finally work to my calibre sooner than later.

Help! Australian nurse wanting to nurse in Canada BC
Hi RN_Pro I received my NNAS report which gave me a Comparable report. As per my application with CRNBC, I do not meet the Maternity and Paeds requirement. I was suggested for the NCAS test by CRNBC. I opted out of the test and planned to do the courses(4) for maternity and paeds. (Since I opted for the study option I am now eligible for Provisional registration as long as I donot work with babies or pregnant woman. I have to now get an employer to give me a job offer before I can be granted Provisional Registration)

Aussie trying to work in Eastern Canada
Hi dishes Wishing you a very happy new year. Sorry for the late reply as I was in the waiting game. My NNAS report came back comparable but CRNBC has asked for NCAS. This is what CRNBC sent yesterday. "You are required to complete a competency assessment because of a gap in your learning and practice history in relation to Child Health/Pediatric Nursing and Maternal Newborn Nursing*. All eligibile applicants who have a current application will be given one year to complete NCAS.* Applicants required to complete a competency assessment because of an experience gap in these areas may have the alternative option of completing coursework directly. Please contact CRNBC for more information." So now I am unsure if NCAS will focus on things that I am incompetent in (maternal and pediatric nursing) or will be a generalized exam focused on testing my knowledge in comparison with newly graduated Canadian nurses. And If I go to the direct route of course work without bothering about NCAS, I am not sure if Kwantlen or Thompson's university in BC can offer me just those courses and placements that I am short in. Planning to ring CRNBC regarding same. Just not sure yet with my set of questions and the right mind frame. Taking time to let everything sink in for clarity.

hi dishes. Nothing was mentioned about NNAS being free for the trial period. So I am assuming it won't be free.

Aussie trying to work in Eastern Canada
Hi dishes I attended the RN session at CRNBC. Any nurses requiring assessment now will have to do the ncas. Sec assessment is being phased out in September. Hi Sarah Can I get in contact with you via email please. how do we exchange email ids? Also, How did you already reach the NCLEX stage in US nursing whereas in Canada it is kind of the last thing after the assessment and refresher courses? Right now, my NNAS dashboard states Ready for Review. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Aussie trying to work in Eastern Canada
Wow, I never compared the statistics for both the countries. The general public assumes since the health care is of similar standards so would be the education of health professionals in these countries. My only concern is that if Canadian nurses can get registered in Australia in a matter of months, So should we. But I and many other Australian nurses chose to come here, so we just have to deal with the consequences. I am not complaining but just very disappointed. From working in a busy hospital ward as an RN, I am struggling to even get a health care aid job at the moment. Just a big slap on my self-esteem. My first dream in Canada I woke up hearing IV pumps beeping. I just burst out crying because I knew I won't be hearing them for a while.

Aussie trying to work in Eastern Canada
Yes Dishes. I emailed my university regarding same yesterday. They said they will post the Student Handbook + each course descriptions in much detail as you stated above. My university was of the impression that they didn't need to bulk up with all the information as it is easily available online on the uni website. But NNAS just wants everything made available to them as it would slow their process while evaluating. Yes, I am trying to stay calm and positive in the time being but expecting all sort of outcomes. Just a big life transition going on at the moment.

Aussie trying to work in Eastern Canada
Hi Sarah I started my NNAS application in April. Today I received an email from NNAS that my curriculum from my uni was quite brief. According to a tutorial on the NNAS website in FAQ section they state that they prefer 1-5pgs per course. So, I have emailed my university now and am awaiting for their reply. I am just not sure what to do in the meantime. Reading various blogs online where RNs have registered on NNAS as LPNs too. Should I do that or not. Or should I just maybe start preparing for the SEC exam. Today I am reading a blog on ‘nadseverafter.com'. Here, an IEN talks about her personal experience in obtaining registration in Canada as an IEN.

Hi Sarah I was also trained inAustralia as an RN and have now applied to NNAS for registration in Canada BC. Studied 3 yrs for my Bachelors and worked for 6 yrs in an acute medical ward. How didyour course from uni come up as? Comparable, somewhat comparable or notcomparable? From reading on the allnurses forum IEN nurses has had a problemwith course work as they didn't do paeds + maternity at uni. Were you also a midwife in Australia to work in the neonatal ward that covered you for those areas of specialties for the NNAS report? Do you now just have to give the Competency based assessment and thenNCLEX? No need to go to uni to study anymore?

Australian nurse want to work in Canada
hi Dishes-Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am a permanent resident and currently residing in BC. Came here a month ago. Now, I am looking for my options to obtain some sort of work. Since I come from a nursing background I was contemplating doing a care aid course or going back to Uni while I wait for NNAS to come up with a report (1-2 yrs?). I will check out the other thread too.

Australian nurse want to work in Canada
Hi all. I am an RN from Australia with 6 yrs of experience.Looking to get registered in Canada. Just submitted all my paperwork to the NNAS. Wondering if anyone has recently had any advisory report from the NNAS? Just worried as my course was 3 yrs without maternity or paeds. My experience is only in medical nursing. I was advised by someone to also register for LPN on NNAS in addition to RN. Rang CLPNBC and they said that even they require paeds + maternity education to give us registration. Is it advisable to sign up for a maternity + paeds course in a uni while waiting for an advisory report? Are there any univerisites in BC that enroll us just for a maternity+ paeds course?
