We use dynahex to clean our sites and a sterile 2x2 and tegaderm. Our P/P also states that we observe the site before the treatment is initiated. i know that in the hospital settings you only change the cvc every 7 days but this is different than the dialysis catheter.

I felt the same way but I was sent to class room for 2 weeks and had never even been in the unit so I knew nothing except the little that was covered in school. I worked ICU before I went into dialysis. I was then sent back to the clinic and to begin working on the floor. I was scared to death and still have fear at times but now am a charge nurse after 2 years in dialysis. I still learn everyday and feel that you will continue to learn. although the routines are the same basically it is never a dull moment or at least at our clinic that is the case. I like the job for the hours also. At our faciliuty we use the BAC system to chart in and all of our orders are computerized. You should talk to the RN that is training you and let her know you need more guidance.If she is your mentor her work load should not be as busy while she is "supposed" to be training you, the reason I know this is I am also the mentor at our clinic and that is our job responsibility to give you all the training that you need and to be your support person. I will always have a listening ear if you need to vent. I am encouraging you to give it your best shot as it is a rewarding experience.:)

At our facility we try to rotate sites each cannulation, the buttonhole is new for me!

We bleach at the end of the day everyday. We let the part bleach and part RO set for 10 minutes and then rinse with RO and check with Chlorine strips to make sure jug is free of bleach.

Never heard of a buttonhole technique. Can you explain?

Don't stress. I only had two weeks of training and then only two weeks on the floor before I was alone with 8 patients in my pod alone. You just need to get the basic knowledge of why you are doing what you are doing and the rest will fall in place with a little time.
