Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2015
Scrolled through the many posts and CONGRATS TO THOSE WHO WERE ACCEPTED! for those who were rejected or waitlisted, as cliche as it sounds, dont give up and remember that everything happens for a reason. the reason for rejection may not always be black and white or clear-cut; it may not be that you dont qualify for stony's program, but it could be that stony isnt a good fit for you (which isnt necessarily a bad thing, but hope that made sense..) but whatever the reason may be, dont let it discourage you from pursuing your dream and goals!! keep applying and improving/strengthening yourself, whether it means going for the 2-year program, waiting another year, volunteering/working to add to your resume, etc etc. Closed doors can be opportunities as well. And once you do get into a program, whether it is at Stony Brook or elsewhere, you'll definitely learn to appreciate it more because of the tough, long journey that it took for you to get to that point and along the way, you didn't let a rejection stop you from what you wanted to do, and you'll be the better person for that. So in short, keep pushing. Whether you were accepted or not, your turn to shine will come.

They emailed me about my acceptance! Idk if anyone got a physical letter about it but I've heard that the previous classes did, but email is usually how they'll do it.

so when you choose clinical groups/rotations, there's SB24, where 24 students do all their rotations at stony brook hospital. then theres DEU/traditional, where students do their clinicals at other hospitals, such as south hampton, Pilgrim, Sagamore, and other hospitals you guys prob havent heard of before. students in SB24 are (kinda) expected to work at stony after graduation, so if you know you wanna work elsewhere, dont pick SB24. theres pros and cons to each type of clinical group. but as GoVeg said, dont worry about it til you get to it! theres plenty of stressing to be done later on. enjoy the holidays! its hard to wait for a decision, but just keep yourself busy and before you know it, that day will come :)

@beestar: there are several people in my class who just graduated from undergrad and went straight into this nursing program. then there are others who havent been in school for years. there's definitely a good mix of people with different amounts of life and education experience, which is what's so great about this program :) to all those who are still waiting on an interview call: dont be discouraged! remember that an interview call doesn't mean you got accepted. on the flip side, not getting an interview doesn't mean you got rejected. anything goes with stony

hey yz9550, we have a thread for "Stony Brook Accelerated Class of 2015" that is more active. The users there are in similar shoes and have the same questions, so go on there and you wont regret it I believe you dont have to send the official transcripts until you get accepted. But when in doubt, I would call to make sure. in any case, see you on the other thread :)

stony has a regular 2-year program and the accelerated 1-yr program. you learn the same stuff essentially in both, but of course, with the 2-yr program, its spaced out so you have more time to work/study/have a life. i think they also do more clinical hours, but i could be wrong on that. also, the 2-years get the opportunity to work at stony over the summer for a summer externship, so thats a great experience and opportunity to network, work one on one with patients, gain experience, etc. you can definitely apply to the 2-yr program as a backup in case you dont get into the 1-yr. however, i know some students who applied to both programs and got rejected from the 2-yr but accepted into the 1-yr. the deadline for the 2-yr is later.

@kris10marie: congrats on getting thru the interview process!! now the hard part is the waiting, which i would suggest finding something, like volunteering, seeing friends, travelling, picking up a hobby, watching tv, etc. to do to pass the time and occupy your mind. jan seems like forever away! it's super awesome to hear (and see on this forum) that everyone is friendly and nice! they could be your potential classmates and then if they are, you guys can look back at that experience in the future and laugh about it but anyways, getting ahead of myself here.

if you're really passionate about nursing and pursuing it, dont let grades, people, or whatever discourage you from going after it! the only limits there are are the ones you put on yourself, so go for it!! :) as for the interviews, look at it as a chance to shine. it does seem like an intimidating, nerve-racking (or is it nerve-wrecking??) process, but the interview is a great opportunity to show them your passion that can't always be seen in ur essay or on your transcript. they always emphasized to us that the ones with 4.0 GPAs dont always make the best nurses and vice versa. in the 3 1/2 months we've been in the program, all the professors have shown their passion for nursing, whether it was thru their lectures, their stories or personalities. im sure SBU definitely wants to continue that with their students. just be yourself. show them your passion for nursing. show them you're ready and capable of not just completing the program, but also being a great nurse! and most importantly, believe in yourself!! if you dont, how can you expect SBU to? best of luck to everyone and yes, please update us on how things go! ill be rooting for you guys, woot woot!

Not sure what advice or input to give about the interviews....Don't be nervous! As hard as that may be to do, remember that everyone else in the room is feeling the same thing. Don't let your nerves get the best of you! do what you would normally do for any other interview. remember your strengths, recognize your weaknesses, show your passion, that sort of stuff. Paco was a great source and guidance when I applied last year, and I hope I can do the same and pay it forward to you guys. While he can speak to you guys about his current work experience, it might be best to ask me about the current curriculum since I'm part of the younger generation (hahahha paco, im just kidding!!) it's also great that you guys are helping each other out too! *also, i want to suggest that while you are at stony for the interview, take a look around the hospital, Health Science Center building, stony brook area, etc. if you have the time. while they are trying to see if you're a good fit for them, remember that it's just as important to see that stony is a good fit for YOU. goooodddd luckkkkk!!

Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2015
ive been hearing that SBU is doing interviews, which is something they just started doing for this year's entering class apparently. so unfortunately, we cant provide you guys with much help or input on that. but look at it as an opportunity to shine and be more than just a name on a piece of paper !

no benefit to submitting it early other than the fact that you get it out of the way earlier. i think i remember mailing in my official transcript to stonybrook last fall, but perhaps i remembered wrong or they changed the policy for this year. and GoVeg is right: you can complete your pre-reqs next spring since the fall sem is already about halfway done (eeks, already?!!) but if you're unsure about an answer to a question, calling or emailing Karen would be a safe bet. she's pretty good with emailing back within a reasonable amount of time!

@LAGD: dont count yourself out! there are definitely people in our class who dont have medical volunteer experience. i cant emphasize enough how diverse our class is! please dont deprive yourself of the chance/opportunity just because you dont have any medical experience. stony looks at the applicant as a whole and takes into account everything: GPA, essay, recommendations, prior experiences, etc. if you really want to get into the program, dont let that stop you! go for it because you never know what may happen.

Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2015
its also important to remember that the best applicants ARENT always the ones who've had years and years of healthcare experience, such as being a nurse's aid or an EMT. our class is quite diverse in that people majored in different areas and have extensive backgrounds and experience in different fields that arent related to healthcare necessarily. if you can relate whatever experience you had into how you'll be a good nurse, etc., then do that!

If you think a supplemental page/resume would help, then attach it. You can also incorporate it into your essay of its relevant and appropriate. Try to havr your recommenders finish the recommendations asap so you can get that outta the way. Deadline is in a few weeks, wow!!

when is the deadline for the application this year?

Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2015
Hey GoVeg !! I would definitely say to trim it down to 5 pages. Whatever you have to say can definitely be said in 3-5 pages, especially since they do have a lot of applicants to look at. For our current class of 77 students, they said they had like around 600 qualified applicants. Remember that they don't want to hear your whole life story. Stick to the essentials: what makes you stand out, why did you decide to pursue nursing, how do you personally identify with nursing, that sort of thing. Quality > quantity I completely agree with what GoVeg said. I do believe they put quite a bit of weight on the essay since numbers don't tell you the whole story about the person.

I unfortunately don't have a car, but two of my housemates do so I rely on them to travel to and from school for classes and clinicals. It depends on when and where your clinicals are, but during the summer, everyone had clinicals on fridays 7a-7p, so I got rides from my housemates to stonybrook hospital. For the fall, my psych clinical is out in riverhead, about 45-60 mins from where I live so ill be getting a ride from someone in my clinical group. Dont worry abt not having a car cus you can carpool and chip in for gas. I'm not the only one in my class who's car-less lol. But if you can get one, get one cus its def way more convenient having it. I found a place about 10-15 mins from campus. You cqn live in a dorm on campus too, but that'll be very expensive.

Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2015
Hi guys! @bloodorange, thats so sweet haha. I hope both of you guys get in! Here are my thoughts and comments so far about the program, hope they help! - I'm really enjoying the program so far. Yes its a lot of work, but everyone in my class is extremely friendly and helpful. We're one big nursing family, which is one aspect that I like. I got a positive vibe from the stony's facebook group and that's what ultimately pushed me toward picking stony as opposed to picking binghamton, my alma mater. - My credentials: I had a ~3.5-3.55 overall and pre-req GPA. As far as experience: I interned on a labor and delivery floor at a hospital for one semester. Other than that, not much "healthcare" experience. I was basically a teacher/tutor since 16 and that was like my main/only experience. But i used that to my advantage when it came to writing the essay and getting recommendations. But stony looks at the application as a whole, so don't think youre set if you have a 3.8 GPA or don't think you dont stand a chance if you have a 3.1 GPA. - It's an intense year. The summer wasnt so bad even though it was 19 credits. It had 2 online courses. Right now its not so bad since pathology and pharmacology havent started yet. - My recommendation is to finish the application early/ASAP. In case there's something missing in your application or stony didnt receive something or whatever, then youll have time to get it done. The waiting time from the deadline to when they inform you of their decision (usually early January. for me it was jan 7, the first day they were responding back with application decisions ) is the hardest, so if you have a job or are still in school, then use that to distract you. - If you're set on Stony, I would also suggest visiting the school for an info session or just to see what it looks like. The staff and faculty here are so inspiring, motivating, and supportive, which is something I really like because they're investing their time and efforts into us instead of looking at teaching as "just a job they have to do." I'll keep this post short, but feel free to ask more questions. I'd be happy to answer them when I have time (or don't feel like doing work or studying as I should be doing right now lols). Good luck to you guys and everyone here who will soon be on this thread!

Stony Brook Accelerated Nursing Class of 2015
It's almost september, which means people are starting to get their applications for nursing together real soon. I'm currently in the 1-yr nursing program here at Stony Brook. A previous alum started the 2014 thread for us, so I figured I do the same. Feel free to ask questions or message me with them. Good luck to everyone applying! :)

thats great to hear! i think itll still snow out in LI though lol. and what?! whats there not to like about nyc?!?? haha, so much to do, see, eat in nyc. LI can be a bit boring in my opinion in comparison to nyc, but i could be biased since i was born and raised in nyc. either way, good to hear. stony is the way to go :)

Stony Brook Accelerated BSN Class of 2014
Yes I am going to stony! The first day of orientation is actually in exactly 2 weeks and then school starts the week after. So nervous and excited and happy and anxious and all these other feelings lol. I got into binghamton's accelerated prog as well, but I'm really happy I went with stony instead even though I wanted to go back to my alma mater. But congrats on making that tough decision! Maybe I'll see you at stony? haha
