How do I get out?
1. So sorry to read this - I truly believe 99% of nurses have been in this dark place at one point (or many, many points) in our careers. You are not alone. 2.I have been here (still there - I think sometimes). 3. Sounds like you are in intense settings - have you ever tried less intense nursing? Granted - there is no such thing as a stress - free nursing job. They are always going to try and squeeze as much labor as they can from you (especially since nursing are the most expense part of the "labor" budget) - but there are different kinds of stress. For example, home health, MD office (if you can find it), hospice, school RN (people do not realize how busy and stressful this can be - just a heads up to really do some lunch interviews with nurses IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT you plan to apply = the districts are very, very different from each other - and you get all holidays paid - including 6-9 weeks in summer), telemed/triage.... things that are more M-F 9-5 = so you can have a life. The pay is lower than hospital RN - but you are trading money for time and a "different" kind of stress that may be more manageable. You are still using your nursing skills - in many areas more than if you were in hospital = why these positions do not generally hire "new" nurses. 4. Do you have a life? Sincerely asking this question. Especially with hospital nursing/12 hours shift = very easy to no keep up with friends, have hobbies, outside interest - really what makes life worth living. It is way too easy for us to work - come home - stay home and not live outside of work. Do you have an outlet to pursue other things? Are you solely defining yourself as a "nurse"? Hope this helps, and remember therapy is not a bad thing = the amount of stress and BS we put up with would wear down the most resilient person. Best wishes.

Best to resign or wait it out?
Situation: After being out of hospital nursing for a year or so, hired at hospital facility a few months ago. Initial facility was great - then they closed it. Was transferred to other facility = horrible internet pt/family review, MDs not satisfied with care. Have never felt this overloaded before (even at previous hospital jobs in past), but every night this place is constant chaos for a variety of reasons. After 1 week there, started looking for another job. Just accepted a position, but with all the background checks, etc... will take a month to get to start date. ***then to complicate matter more, just informed they are going to write me up- this issue is directly related to state facility is currently in. QUESTION: IS it better to resign, than to sign/not sign write up now and leave a place where I am very concerned for pt safety - or - wait it out (working ~ 12 shifts) and risk more write ups/pt events? I might be targeted as I have brought up concerns to management. Rationale: thinking a resignation will look better than a fire. I do not think my new job will fall through (no issue with screening process) - but you never know = just concerned if this job does fall through for some strange reason, will be hard to find another job due to "facility wasn't safe so I quit - look it up on google" explanation. Thoughts/advice - please. Thanks.

Check the mail today - no letter!!!! I guess they went to a special place in the amazon to cut down the special acceptance letter paper tree, floating it back down the Amazon River, grinding it, bleaching in, pressing it to make the paper to send us the letter? Don't even get me started on what they are having to do to make the ink.... Seriously, this sounds so illogical, but until I have the letter in my hand I am not 100% convinced that I made it....okay, until I am in the chair of my first class - THEN I'll accept I made it....where are my tums?

Oh sorry about the "keep your pecker up!" My husband, reading over my shoulder, just reminded me that is a British thing not an American thing and could be interrupted in a not to say in front of your mother in law kind of way.... So sorry.

Good luck MAC031!!!!!!!! I am assuming your over all GPA is what got you - correct? Or was it the science GPA? I may have misunderstood them, but the only science I think they look at is A&Ps, Chem (hey take intro - I did), and Nutrition to "make up" the science GPA - don't know if that helps? Hope you get into Lone Star - I have to giggle every time I say that - I am currently enrolled at Cyfair - and every time I say "Lone Star" I do it in the way Dark Helmet does it in the Mel Brooks movie - Space Balls!!!!!! Yeah, don't do it in front of the administrators - they don't find it as funny as I do. Best wishes - keep your pecker up!

So sorry for those who did not get in this round - would re-taking some of your classes improve anything? Re-taking the HESI? No fun, but you gotta do what you gotta do. They need to get more Professors= more spots for good candidates. Best Wishes and keep on trying! They need you out there!

"Holds" refers to information/documentation they need from you but don't have; BUT it does not mean they need it RIGHT NOW. Some of us interrupted these "HOLDS" as positive signs in regards to our acceptance into the program (only to have that confirmed for some and leaving others hanging in limbo); BUT an Admin lady told me two days ago - just because you have these holds changed DOES NOT guarantee acceptance until you (I am hoping she just "has" to say that): 1. Have your status changed. 2. Get a letter telling you that your status is changed. There could be several reasons your status has not changed yet - this is all PURE CONJECTURE: 1. Holds post immediately - status change takes a while... 2. You are on the bottum of the application pile (not for any particular reason - bad luck) and they just haven't gotten to you yet. 3. You may be put on an alternates list. 4. They enjoy messing with you.... 5. Sadly, you may not have gotten in. The "holds" after you get accepted are all things you will have to provide. Good Luck - I'll sacrifice a chicken for you....

Hi all, 1. For the CPR certification (make sure it covers Adult and Pedi) fax your card or documentation (if you have it) to: Atten: Lisa (Maggie is no longer there) at same fax # 713-500-2107 2. Is anyone else having trouble with seeing the Residency requirements page? 3. You might want to start your background check ASAP. I have heard RUMORS in the past that because all the schools kind of let people know around the same time there can be a bottleneck and if you have something come up (Forgotten speeding ticket=warrant or your name being similar to someone else with a record....) you may not have time to clear it up before the fall registration deadline - not to make anyone paranoid - but just get it out of the way in case - it is $49 with everything said and done. Join the Face book page - Rocket Surgery put up the pre-enrollment requirements - if you talk with anyone at UT and have help info - please post there and here - Thanks!

I am so crazy, frustrated right now!!!!!!!!!!! I can not get access to UTLINKs - have been trying for two months now - two lessons learned: 1. Do not read allnurses before going to bed - I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight! 2. Must take more computer classes to a - figure out what I can't figure out . b - to know what I am buying when it comes to computers. SOOO HAPPY for all of you who have your acceptances!!!! Hope I will be doing the happy dance soon - the poor admin ladies have got to be sick of me calling! Keep your peckers up to all of you who are still waiting!

Ok - I don't want to chap anybodies hide - but the lady at student health service (where you will send you shots and CPR records to) said they change every ones holds - you still have to be accepted. I hope she just "has" to say that...but at the same time I don't want to get my knickers in a twist and not have it happen. Hope you don't all hate me for the let down!

Hi All, Took my HESI with a raging case of sinusitis and bronchitis - so if my hacking and sniffling disturbed any of you while taking the HESI 12/31/2010 at the Harwin location - I deeply apologize. Being sick for the month of December, I did not get to study as I would have liked and I was so freaked out, I slept 2.5 hours. Overall I got a 90.9 - I got 92s-96s in all areas except conclusions (75- *****???), A&P, Math and Chem (88) with a 830 or 860 on critical - I can't remember and it isn't listed on my Evolve site. I wish they would show you which ones you got wrong - how did I get a 100 in meaning and a 92-96 in everything else - but 75 in conclusions? Maybe I am a freak? I have a 4.0 science, 3.7 in everything and 3.7 in accumulative. I have no medical experince, beside being a primary caregiver to 3 people who were all terminally ill. Fortunately, this was not all at the same time. With the 75 and 88s I think I am out of the game. I am also applying to Lone Star - but it is just as hard...so many trying to get in everywhere. I think a chicken sacrifice to the nursing school admittance Gods maybe in order. Does anybody know where I can get my hands on a live chicken? Is anyone else having problems getting assistance from UT in answering questions or getting UTLink account? Customer service does not seem to be a high priority. How long did it take for you to get your UTLink info? Does anybody know where to find the email address you send your resume' (had a box on application under the 3 employers area to send further info) to? Whenever I email - they just send me a link to the BSN info sight. Realize there maybe a short between the keyboard and chair - but I have read the Nursing website - 5 TIMES- and had my poor husband read all the pages twice and read the catalog twice - can not find this address..... Sorry for the long post - good luck to all - best wishes! - Fall 2011 UT Houston Health Sciences hopefuls
