i'm more than happy to offer some advice! i feel like the programs are very different from one another (vandy and emory) so if you need help weighing pros and cons, i'd be more than happy to offer my two cents worth.

i was accepted in early/mid March for the peds program and am declining my offer, so anaNY... keep a look out!

i got waitlisted as well.. i'd be curious to know how many people that were second rounders actually got acceptances. do you know what they are looking for in terms of numbers for a final class size? i have already sent a deposit into vanderbilt, and that has been my first choice from the beginning, so i'm not too upset. i was just hoping to have some more options when financial aid came into play.

oh, and like I said, i don't know what the deal is with other specialty tracks, but with the PNP track there is absolutely NO WAY TO STAY IN NASHVILLE. i know you said if space permits, and i think the reason that there is no switching once you declared you'll do your rotations away is primarily due to the fact that there is no space permitting..

I am SO sorry for the delay, but I still want to answer your question even though you may have already had it answered by another student. So, the PNP track is unique (and remember, this applies to PRE-SPECIALTY students... not direct-entry (those with a RN)). Though it varies year to year, there are always less than 5 spots for PNP students to do their clinicals within the middle Tennessee area. This is primarily due to competing with medical residents, but there are other factors as well. For this reason, the PNP pre-specialty track program was truly designed as a distance-learning program. This year, the pediatrics director literally has zero spots in the middle TN region for pre-specialty students. Only those who are direct-entry can have those spots, and as I said, the number is minimal. Although I currently live in Nashville, I am not considered to be a local student, and will have to do my clinicals elsewhere. However, I will not need to relocate until January 2013 (I'll probably just go live with my parents for that brief period... January-May). Though you are practicing at a distance, you still come back to Nashville fairly often. You come back generally for a period of 5 days, she said fly in on Tuesday and leave on Sunday, and this happens once in January, February, March or April, and then once more in May. During orientation, you will meet with the clinical placement director who will talk to you about where you think you want to be, and if you have any place in mind. For the PNP track since it is primary care, you want to work in a primary care pediatrician's office; not a corporately owned private practice, since with these larger organizations, it takes approximately 6 months to draw up a contract. Unless the clinical placement office already has a contract in place with that facility, you're better off at the smaller community clinical offices. You complete two clinical rotations, at two different locations. One in the spring, and one in the summer (I believe from May-August). Generally, it is this last clinical placement that leads to a position. Although I was super nervous about having to leave Nashville and coming back every month, it really does seem to work and runs really smoothly. I have talked to several students who have done it, and they said that the people in the clinical placement office really work with you and your schedule. I'm not sure how other specialties work, but I hope this information is at all helpful!! And for those of you who are super excited about clinical experiences, we begin working in the hospital during the last 5 weeks of our Fall semester. In the Spring semester, we rotate to different services every 5 weeks at Vanderbilt and the other two popular neighboring hospitals, St. Thomas and Baptist.

hey everyone, i'm super confused and maybe you can help. i got my letter today, but it is only a letter from the graduate admissions office stating i've been accepted for the fall 2011 semester to the nursing-MS program. it says nothing about MEPN, but I know you need to be accepted to both MEPN and the graduate school... I am NOT already a registered nurse, so I'm just really perplexed by all of this, since as many of you noted, there is zero information given. did anyone else receive a similar letter?

called today, and they are hoping for the end of this week. the poor admissions people have been trying to push the committee along, but they're taking their time.. so.. fingers crossed. they're being sent out snail-mail, but there is a possibility of a phone call or an email for those accepted.

bellevue is not that close, people! trust me. i work out there every day right on the cusp between old belle meade and bellevue, and it is still a good 20-25 minutes with minimal traffic.

to clear up any information on the gym and other campus access spots, this is the deal (and it is also in the financial aid information packet you may have received in january) for an entire YEAR (fall, winter, and summer semesters) gym membership is $456 (which I don't think is accurate according to the student rec center's website) http://www.vanderbilt.edu/campusrecreation/member/memberships.html I know on the website it states: Graduate and Professional students are assessed through tuition a Student Recreation fee that entitles them to one-half the use time of undergraduates. But, from experience, this is not the case. I'm in there all the time with medical students who are in there all the time too. there is no limit. you swipe your card to enter the turnstile, and then that's it. medical school students apparently have the gym membership built into their tuition, so you may want to call and ask the rec center. but as far as i know, you are not limited by any means. However, in the summer months, they have day camp at the rec center, so the hours are weird and you cannot go while camp is in session, i don't think.

no.. they didn't say anything. and sadly, i had a procedure done on my ankle that morning, so when they called i was in a bit of a haze. i woke up a few hours after and asked my boyfriend who was in the room with me when they called if i dreamt the whole thing. and he assured me it happened, so i am unfortunately blanking on any true details they gave me (though i really don't think they gave me any). all they said was that they'd be sending information and forms in the mail and i should receive them soon.

yea! i'm glad other people are out there!!!! i am also confused about the site. did everyone buy the textbook yet? or the disc? i have no idea what to expect. do you know what time we need to sign on on monday? i'm afraid i'll mess up the first day! anyone in the nashville area taking this course??

I hear you both. I got a 2 second phone call saying I was accepted, telling me that I should be expecting things in the mail (which still haven't come). and their application fees were ridiculous! They were so much more expensive than other schools. Does it make any one else concerned about the program? given their lack of communication between applicants?

hey! yes, I am also waiting from Northeastern. I had a phone interview the other day since I couldn't make it up to Boston and then they were on spring break. I've been accepted to 4 schools, but I am going to send in my deposit for Vanderbilt. I mean, its not anything like Yale's deposit, which is $600, so in the grand scheme of things, $200 won't make a dent in terms of the cost of what the program costs!!! What about you?

@TGills: have you not been to Nashville before? The location of Vanderbilt cannot be beat. on the weekends, I've never had to pay more than $5-6 for a cab ride into downtown. It is super accessible, and so much fun!

i would look in neighborhoods like sylvan park, 12 south, belmont, franklin, or brentwood if you're looking for something that is less expensive than green hills, west end, and hillsboro village area. sylvan park and 12 south are still within 2-5 miles from campus.

@TGills and Kate. I currently live in Nashville 2 blocks from Vanderbilt medical center. I can definitely give you advice. Bellvue and Hermitage are quite far since there is a lot of traffic on those routes to get there.. especially Bellvue since you would need to travel down Hillsboro Pike for the majority of getting from Vanderbilt to Bellvue (reverse direction, you can hop on the 40, but it still takes a bit over 20 minutes without any traffic.. any trust me.. there is alwayssss traffic).

where have you been looking?! i wonder if they really need to be all white. i volunteer at the children's hospital at vandy and all of the nursing students that i see are wearing sneakers or those tone-up shoes, since they say they're super comfy if you're on your feet all day. i'm actually about to go in now, so maybe i can pull one aside and ask how strict they are about "all white leather". i'll keep you posted. if there are any male nursing students out there, sorry for talking so much about shoes!!!

no i know, but not ripped or with holes that came with the jeans.. everyone just looks really put together. no gym clothing attire.
