  1. i need some advice on what to do to build on my knowledge but at the same time i dont want to nurse anymore. i want out. i cant stand it anymore. i want to go back to school and get a ba but not in nursing. what can i do to build on my background so that i can get out of this job. i am 49 yrs old is it too lateeeeeeeeeeee for me? i need some real good advice anyone out there? i just cant do it anymore. thanks all. jd
  2. i have lived here all my life and worked here as a rn, ia is the lowest paid for rns and all nurses if you check it out you may find that information located, genesis is magnet statis but they have the lowest pay about 2.00 lower that anyone, you can go to trinity and start out at a higher pay rate because they are illionois based, genesis is the better place to work, but are very hard on their nurses,. they just dont hire to keep, and have just laid off over 100 employees for the second time in the last few years. with genesis its all about budget. expect to bust your a---------- if you want to work there but over all the staff is there to work together and will never leave you hanging or on your own, but watch the medications. even if you have an order if you give meds more than once or twice a shift, a count comes up and you will get reprimanded if a nurse medicates more than what pharm thinks you should be medicating a pt for. regardless of pain issues you will be warranted, just be careful. the drug war is working against nurses not working for the patients. i know a nurse who was just fired and turned into the board for what they say is diversion just becasue she medicated more than what they thought she be medicating. the pt agreed he was medicated by her as they will question the pt when your not around. this nurse worked here for over ten years. with good record. now with omnicell the count is what counts. be careful. this nurse was not disciplined as it was not justified by the board but she was fired and could not find employment in the quad cities due to rumor. no one would hire her. i dont know where she is now but i hope she is ok, this drug problem is so bad its scaring alot nurses so pts are not getting adequate pain meds. or just none at all. otherwise genesis is a good clean place to work with alot of great people as long as you do what they say and dont make decisions on your own, you work for them not for the pt and not for you. i wish you well. jd
  3. did that post go thru
  4. i know what you are saying, i love working with students, when they come to my floor, they for some reason always seem to like me also. but we have some of the worst instructors lately, i am told that their just are none available. and i am told that some of the rules have changed, for ex, we use to take the students that were assigned to us and follow them, and report to the instructor or if a procedure was being done she would have to be there, i am told this is not the way anymore, the instructors are worried about their licenses, i have students who have never put in a foley, and are never allowed iv access at all. if a procedure needs to be done the instructor now has to do it and the students just never get the opportunity, i had a student with me and asked her to collect a stool sample out of a pt room and label it and give it to the secretary to send down and check off, the instructor failed that student that week for doing that for me, i had a fit and went to the college myself, your right your not getting the training you need, and what i am telling my students is pick a good floor to start on one where you know you will get help and precepted well, we are with you, but the colleges just do not teach like they use to. you will be fine just do what she says so you do not fail her clinical. get out of their and watch what other nurses are doing pay attention to everything, working with pts, does not come out of a book, it gets you thru the boards, but does not teach people skills, good luck cc
  5. hi my name is cindy i an new to this site, i have moderate to severe carpal tunnel i have numbness and pain especially my wrists, and thumbs, i started dropping things about six months ago and was waking up with numb hands and swelling, i knew what was wrong and tried the chiro and braces and physical therapy, it has not helped, and emg did confirm, i am having bil surgery done on monday, post op is about two weeks then light duty, but they do not have to let you come back if they do not want to, post op is six weeks and full post op is one year, although the endoscopy carpal tunnel surgery is suppose to be alot more post op and less painful, but nerve damage is more likely i am told, i asked the physicians on my floor what was best all said the old way, i did wait too long and have nerve damage in my right hand, with numbness all the time and partial feeling so dont wait, braces and exercises at this point wont help, my doctor is hopeful the feeling will come back but only fifty fifty chance and may take some time, if you wait and do one after another you will be off work alot longer and workmans comp wont cover where i am, so if you have a source of income one month to twelve weeks is wonderful wish i could do that, anyway, have an emg done if no damage is there maybe pt would help, and braces at night, the surgery itself is about ten to fifteen minutes, small surgery for such along post op, anyway good luck :) cindy from iowa
  6. thanks for emailing, i heard i was kinda upset with someone when sent the message sorry, i kinda new at this, i suppose they could have been workmans comp i never thought of that, it just seems that with a shortage and we always are working short she would want me to come back asap, anyway, maybe i can get unemployment for awhile to make up lost paycheck, anyway i was just getting home and answering emails so have a good night and thanks for talking jd:rolleyes:
  7. yes they can do that i just had the same problem i have always seemed to have problems with my nurse manager for some reason i just cannot ever do anything right, anyway i had surgery on both hands and post op time is six weeks but, i could not stay off work that long with no pay, so my doctor told me i could work lite duty basically do everything except lift pts. my nurse manager told me that same thing stay home and take care of yourself, even with doctor permission she won't let me come back, but she did let someone come back and work lite duty, just politics, i had to work at staffing agengies in order to pay my rent just sucks doesn't it. my heart goes out to you i know what you are feeling sorry jd
