An RN does not take the exact courses that a resp. therapist would, from beginning to end. A medical assistant takes the CNA course SIDE by SIDE with the students taking the CNA course. Everything. It's just that a Med. Asst. continues and learns much, much more. (Having a bad day?)

It's irrelevant as to why I'm applying for it. I was making a response to your remark about not being qualified to do the work because I dont have a CNA cert., but one that supercedes it. And my analogy about a nurse not being qualified to work in a doctors office caught you off guard. You obviously caught on to what I was referencing to. i.e. a nurse is not a Medical Assistant, but QUALIFIES to work in a doctors office. Get over it.

Again, I took all of the courses, side by side, with those that went to the school for their CNA training, from begining to end. Practical and theory.

I too would be "grossly OVER qualified" to work in a position that takes 1 month of training versus 12 months.

But if you, being a nurse, applied for a position at a doctors office that is searching to hire a Medical Assistant, you wouldn't qualify?

I do have a Medical Assistant diploma. I was under the impression that a Medical Assistant diploma superceded that of a CNA, but I could be incorrect.

I recently graduated from a tech school and received a diploma as a Medical Assistant. I submitted apps. to local hospitals in hopes of obtaining employment as a Patient Support Tech. Can you tell me, in detail, what the job duties include? Thanks. I figured I would ask a nurse..If anyone knows about hospitals and their functions, it would DEFINATELY be a nurse! :)

ATDeskSN I noticed in your response that you stated that you are employed at St. Josephs. I am going to apply there for a position that is posted on their website. The position is labled Patient Support Tech, and it is in the Emergency Dept. Do you know any details of that position? I recently graduated as a Medical Assistant. I am hoping for a position at a hospital and think this may be for me. Any response will surely be appreciated! Thanks

The Medical Assistant that you've spoken to doesn't necessarily represent ALL MA's. I recently graduated from a MA program and it took me 1 year, full time, to get my diploma, as does most students. And to answer your question about why not get into a LPN program or Nursing: 1) The LPN programs here in Tampa have at least a 2 year waiting list, ( I'm 55 years old I want to work a little before I retire) 2) Some people don't have 2 years or more to complete a LPN or Nursing program. They have families, financial obligations, etc. 3) Some of us aren't as fortunate as others when it comes to intelligence to be able to pass the entrance exams. 4) There is financial help for the Medical Assistant or CNA programs. The programs aren't as costly as a Nursing program...... You were fortunate to be able to complete a nursing program. Some of us aren't.
