Certain about midwifery, uncertain about nursing
Hi Lilacs, I was exactly in your place about a year ago when I was deciding where to go for school. I come from a liberal arts (anthropology and women's studies) background and am very opposed to the medical model of care on most fronts. I was really nervous to start school (first year, or pre-specialty) at Seattle U, and was convinced I was going to absolutely suffer through the first year. We started this summer, and I have to say, I am having a BLAST! It's incredibly hard work, but I really had no idea what nursing philosophy really meant, and how different it really is from the medical model. I was so impressed, and pleasantly surprised to learn about the role of nurses as advocates for their patients and being supportive of holistic and alternative therapies while incorporating the whole family. I'm totally behind Nate with the sentiments above, and I have found that even when we were studying heavy pharmacology and pathophysiology, it was so nice to have my other midwifery students with me to deconstruct some of the more "medical" things we were learning. I went through this whole process of choosing an ABSN program vs. a direct entry, and for me direct entry was the right option, and Seattle U's cost was just about the same as an ABSN plus a masters (actually, I think it's a little cheaper when you factor in cost of living in the shorter amount of time the whole program of study will take). Seattle is also really focused on social justice and vulnerable populations, and the atmosphere is great, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Johns Hopkins University BSN/MSN Fall 2011
Thanks Loraine! I applied for the midwifery specialty. I have accepted a spot at Seattle University's program, and would accept at two schools if I could! It was a tough decision, but best of luck to everyone waiting and with beginning the program!

Seattle University -- APNI 2011
I went and visited this week and saw the lab it was amazing! And don't worry if I lived in the Seattle area I definitely would have taken a big break but my anatomy exam is at 8 am in Connecticut. :) I totally recommend going to see the school and the lab. It made my decision an easy one. If anyone else decides on Seattle join the facebook group!

Johns Hopkins University BSN/MSN Fall 2011
Hi all, I got my call for the MSN portion yesterday, I'm in! But I've already accepted a spot at another ( much less expensive school) so hopefully it opens up a spot for someone waitlisted for ABSN/MSN! Best of luck to all!

Vanderbilt Pre-specialty Fall 2011
I don't think you can pm (send or receive) until you have 15 posts, but its nothing bad about the program, so I don't mind posting here. It's simply not the right fit for me. I got the feeling that the program, and Vanderbilt, as a medical facility, are really into technology and innovation and prestige. While those are fantastic things for most specialties, it just doesn't seem to apply to mine too much (midwifery) I'm choosing Seattle because their vision is really based around social justice, service, and working with vulnerable populations, which is really what I'm all about. It's also a much smaller program, and in a city I can see myself living in. Also, Vandy is (literally) twice the cost of my other choice. So I have nothing bad to say about the program, or the weekend. Everyone in the nursing department has been really amazing and available, and I haven't heard a single bad thing. It's just not my perfect fit, but hopefully for someone on the waitlist it is!

Seattle University -- APNI 2011
Well, I went and visited Vanderbilt this weekend, and they made my decision super-easy. It's officially Seattle for me! I'm so excited! I'll be moving cross-country, and will definitely be looking for roommates, so if anyone's interested in looking for a place, pm me! Best of luck to all still waiting!

Vanderbilt Pre-specialty Fall 2011
Hi all, I attended the open house this weekend, and while Vandy has a very impressive program, it's just not the right fit for me. I'll be turing down my spot for one at Seattle U's midwifery program, so hopefully someone on the waitlist gets my spot! Best of luck to all!

Kate, I'm midwifery too!

Seattle University -- APNI 2011
I agree, there's no way only two of us received that e-mail because we are the only two admitted. My status was one of the first to change AND I interviewed on Feb. 1st. And it would take one hell of a dedicated admissions officer to go in at 7 a.m. on a Sunday just to send out that e-mail. No worries yet, everyone. I did, however, call the admissions office and I'm officially admitted :)

Its incredibly strange. It came from grad admissions though. I'm sure it was automated. And I'm midwifery, and I think flaneur is AGNP. I would call but I'll have to wait till noon tomorrow I guess. I'll let you know what I find out, and best of luck to all waiting and waitlisted!

Seattle University -- APNI 2011
Did anyone else just get an e-mail from grad admissions that says: "Please take a few minutes to complete our Admitted Graduate Student Survey by clicking here. We hope to learn more about you and what factors inform your decision to accept or decline the offer of admission to Seattle University" I haven't received anything in the mail, so I'm nervous to start celebrating. I think someone in admissions may have jumped the gun...

I "third" the words of encouragement to jbsu, and a huge congratulations to vmae99!!! All of these programs are incredibly competitive, and I feel like there's lots of switching around before programs start and waitlisters make it in all the time! I was waitlisted for a few schools when I first applied to college and from talking to admissions officers, they truly believe every one who they waitlist is qualified and capable. Keep us updated, and keep bugging the crap out of them, I hear that helps too!

Kate what specialty are you? And tgill I definitely will! Those things are basically going to be the most important things for me to look at, as I can only go to Nashville once before having to make my decision. I'm so excited to see the city and the school! I have to admit, as a northern girl to the bone I've never been to the south!

Seattle University -- APNI 2011
Maybe they're just doing it to **** with us I can see them all sitting around in the graduate admissions office saying, "Ok, Larry, you're going to tell them they've been sent, Susan, you're 'they're still working on it' and Jim, well, you tell 'em anything. Keep 'em on their toes!" Best of luck waiting!

Seattle University -- APNI 2011
Just talked to admissions because I'm trying to figure out how to visit if I'm accepted (My spring break starts next week and its the only time I could visit...air fare is going to be pricey at this point). I was hoping for a little shred of information, as if I'm accepted I would need to go to Nashville (accepted to Vanderbilt's program) and Seattle over break and she said letters went out over the past few days and more will be sent out over the next...so anytime now!!!! Darn living in Connecticut!!

Vanderbilt Pre-specialty Fall 2011
I feel silly...the mail just hadn't come before I left for class. Just got home with a lovely letter of acceptance for the CNM program!!! So happy, and visiting over spring break. Anyone from the Nashville area have any suggestions of what to do/see in the city? Best of luck to all still waiting! :)

Vanderbilt Pre-specialty Fall 2011
I know, right? I think its exciting though...and hopefully the odds work in our favor. Still nothing in my mail, but I live in Norwestern Connecticut, so maybe tomorrow. That's good to know about Seattle's cohort too (I applied there as well). I asked how big it was and the woman I spoke with said 10, including people who already have their RN, so I was unsure of how many they would accept as APNI. Stay sane as we wait till week! I'm hoping to have all my decisions by the end of this week so I can get everywhere and visit!
