  1. I live in Arizona and it's one of the lowest paying states and a CNA makes about $8.50-12.00/hr here, so yes I think you're getting paid very low. I have a friend who works for Kindred hosptial which is mainly where they are weaning pt's off of ventilators and such and she only has about 1 yr of experience and she's making $24/hr as an LPN.
  2. ok, I couldn't hold back when I saw this comment... Are you kidding? He's taken us to war for no reason and over 1,500 of our soldiers have died because of it!! That is more than enough reason to be ashamed - HELLO!!! I too was blinded by Bush and the Bush Administration until I started to educate myself. You can start by watching Fahrenheit 911. Also, here's a link that will highlight all the news Bush and the Republicans tried to slip past while media obsessed on the Schiavo case. http://www.progressivedailybeacon.com/commentary.php?id=458 Our President is a LIAR and has many reasons to be ashamed! ok, so Clinton wasn't a good husband, but our dollar was strong and our economy was great. Since Bush has been in office, our economic state has been the worst in the Presidential history - big red flashing lights coming at you...
  3. Yes, you said it, so many people were blinded by Bush including myself! I've really started to educate myself on what's really going on in the world specifically the war in Iraq. I have come to find out that Bush has taken us to a war for no reason - he said that the justification was that terriorists' in Iraq had WMD's and now recently the White House has informed us that their search for WMD's is over and we found NOTHING!! Well, according to what I have gathered, Bush used 9/11 for an excuse to go to Iraq, mainly to get their oil. Actually, there are and never were terriorists' in Iraq, they are in Saudi Arabia and Bush knows it, but the Saudi's have made Bush and the Bush family so much money from oil and whatever else that he wouldn't dare turn his back on them, he would instead have our soldiers go to a war and die for reasons that only applied to him - this is hard to believe, but it is true. The media doesn't show us so much, but there are other ways of finding out what's really happening and the saddest part is that a good % of us don't have a clue. And he says that we're at war to give the Iraqis their freedom...blah blah blah...yeah let's worry about our own freakin country when we have enough problems of our own and these other countries who we help in time of need wouldn't care if we were wiped off the planet. We are in the worst economy of any US President! He is one big lie after another. oh well, at least he can't escape his own Karma and if I were him I would be teriffied...
  4. I'm very sorry for your familys' loss. I honestly don't think that the doctor would say that it wasn't a match just to spare the mothers' feelings. Also, I don't think that telling the mother about her drug use will do anything except make things worse. Some things are better left untold...and what you don't know won't hurt you.
  5. How about a Nursing Instructor at a college or even in a hospital setting? They say there is a shortage of nurses and that there are plenty of people that want to go into nursing, but not enough Nursing Instructors.
  6. I think in your situation that it would be a good idea for you to go to school for the LVN and then transition to RN when your hubby gets back. I have a friend who has been an LVN for about 1 year and is making $24/hr..I wouldn't consider that 'crap' money, not too shabby if you ask me
  7. sparkyRN Thank you for all the detail you provided. It was very helpful in understanding what it's like in the NICU. I like how you refer to them as 'your babies' :) I can tell you're a wonderful nurse! Thanks again!
  8. Not only are you entitled your PTO, but since you gave your 2-week notice and she decided to let you go on the spot, you are also entitled to the 2-weeks notice pay!! This is a law and I just recently quit my job with a 2-week notice and they let me go on the spot with my 2-weeks notice pay without having to work the 2-weeks. Not everyone knows this, but it is a law. Get your money!! I also agree with the other poster about about getting something in writing about you giving your notice and not being fired. Best of luck to you!
  9. I just thought I would mention something that I recently learned about giving your 2-week notice. If you give your employer your 2-week notice and they decide to let you go on the spot, by law, you are entitled to the 2-week notice pay PLUS any un-used sick or vacation time. I know the money is nothing compared to what you are/have gone through at this place, but since it just recently happened to me, I thought you might find it interesting.
  10. This is the speciality I want to go into and I wanted to ask you what your typical daily routine is in the NICU? I love babies so much and they are so innocent and beautiful precious little angels! Something I keep thinking about is what my emotional state will be because I love babies so much and I know it has to be hard to work on that floor. I would love to hear your feedback on anything related to working in the NICU. Thanks in advance!
  11. I just recently found out that if you put in your 2-week notice and your employer tells you to just leave, then by law they have to pay you for your 2-week notice. Interesting, huh?
  12. Fun for a giggle...This only takes a minute. Sometimes when you have a stressful day or week, you need some silliness to break up the day. And, if we are honest, we have a lot more stressful days than not. Here is your dose of humour...Follow the instructions to find your new name. The following in an excerpt from a children's book, "Captain Underpants And the Perilous Plot of Professor Poopypants" by Dave Pilkey. The evil Professor forces everyone to assume new names. Use the third letter of your first name to determine your new first name: > a = poopsie b = lumpy c = buttercup d = gadget > e = crusty f = greasy > g = fluffy h = cheeseball i = chim-chim j = stinky > k = flunky l = boobie > m = pinky n = zippy o = goober p = doofus > q = slimy r = loopy > s = snotty t = tootie u = dorkey v = squeezit > w = oprah x = skipper > y = dinky z = zsa-zsa Use the second letter of your last name to determine the first half of your new last name: > a = apple b = toilet c = giggle d = burger > e = girdle f = barf > g = lizard h = waffle i = cyote j = monkey k > = potty l = liver > m = banana n = rhino o = bubble p = hamster q = > toad r = gizzard > s = pizza t = gerbil u = chicken v = pickle > w = chuckle x = tofu > y = gorilla z = stinker Use the fourth letter of your last name to determine the second half of > your new last name: a = head b = mouth c = face d = nose e = > tush f = breath > g = pants h = shorts i = lips j = honker > k = butt l = brain > m = tushie n = chunks o = hiney p = biscuits q = > toes r = buns > s = fanny t = sniffer u = sprinkles v = kisser > w = squirt x = humperdinck > y = brains z = juice > > Thus, for example, John Howards new name is Cheeseball Bubblehead. > > Now when you SEND THIS ON...use your new name as the subject.
  13. I believe in Fate. I grew up not knowing what I wanted to be except I knew I wanted to be a mom and have children since I was about 10 yrs old. My mother wanted me to go into the military and become a pilot. I can't even stand to be on a plane without being a nervous wreck let alone fly one...was she kidding?!! When I was about 17, I all of the sudden knew that I wanted to go into the medical field, it was difentely a 'calling', no other explanation. I've always been a giver and the feeling of helping people is very rewarding to me.
  14. The school I'm going to is only $10,000 and and is 11 months. There is a 2+ year waiting list to get into the RN program, so I figured I'd take the LPN/LVN route and then transition into the RN program for the last 2 semesters.
  15. My dad is 1 of 10 children. I think there are over 30 grandchildren!
  16. I'm still in school, but I took the CNA course and did our lab work at a LTC facility. The main duties would include; feeding, bathing, changing their briefs or helping them to the bathroom. The basics of ADL.
  17. I'm still in school, but I took the CNA course and did our lab work at a LTC facility. The main duties would include; feeding, bathing, changing their briefs or helping them to the bathroom. The basics of ADL.
  18. I took my CNA class at a community college and it only cost me a little over $100 dollars. I also had the same thought of being a CNA so it could allow me the flexibility to go to nursing school. It is a low paying job, but some places will pay a little more and I've seen it up to $10.75 which is still kibbles n bits, but hey, you have to survive somehow while making it through nursing school. :)
  19. This is not really a NDE, but similar. My best friend died about 8 years ago in a car accident when I was 6 months pregnant. She was pronounced dead at the scene; about 45 minutes later she was recessitated and brought back to life, but was in a coma and died the next morning. I think that she came back after 45 minutes because she was fighting it, she had 2 small daughters. Anyways, about a week before she died she had a dream that all her friends and family were at her funeral which she told me the next day and then a week later she really was gone. A few months after she died I had a dream about her and she was telling me she was going to die and we were crying together. I'm not sure if it was just a dream of if she really came to me in my dream to say goodbye, but it felt very surreal. This might sound weird, but I use to think that she was reincarnated into my daughter. Do any of you believe in that? I'm not sure it that's really possible, but at the time the thought crossed my mind.
  20. So according to them it's 'professional' to call the docs, Dr. so and so, but nurses don't derserve the same 'professionalism' as doctors? I personally think that it's degrating to not include that with nurses if this is the policy there are putting into effect, not that I want to be called Nurse Kristy, but I think you get my point. And as one of the previous comments, I can understand introducing and referring to the doc as Dr. so and so to the pt, but when talking to each other, give me a break. Like nurses don't have enough on their plate to have to deal with petty politics too.
  21. Yes, $1300 is very low for relocation. We moved to California to Arizona (just the next state over) and the U-haul alone cost us $1000 not to mention gas for the u-haul and 2 other cars! I don't blame you for complaining about the relocation package they offered and I'm glad you got a better opportunity. Best of luck to you!
  22. No one has the same personality and everyone is different. As long as you are a caring individual, you can work as a nurse in any area.
  23. Also, a lot of CC have 11 month LPN courses. The RN course is 2 years, but will normally take 3-4 years because of all the pre-reqs.
  24. When I was 4 months pregnant I had my first ultra-sound and my doctor noticed that my placenta was a little low and warned me to keep my activities to a minimum and that she would check again when I was 7 months to make sure everything was ok. At my 7 month ultra-sound my doctor told me that I had Placenta Previa and ordered immediate bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy. About 2 weeks after being on bed rest, I started having contractions and I thought it was just a stomach ache or gas and waited a few hours, but then I realized I had to go to the ER, upon doing so they did have to give me a shot to stop the contractions and put me on medication. You may want to ask your doctor if your placenta is in tact and/or high enough, you don't sound like you have the same case, but I thought I would tell you anyways, just in case. Women who have Placenta Previa typically have contractions in their mid pregnancy. Best of luck to you!
  25. You can take CNA classes outside of college. A lot of nursing homes and even some hospitals will offer them. You may want to go to some of the local nursing homes and offer to do some volunteer work and speak to them about offering CNA classes. However, if you would some day like to work in the trama unit, then I believe you would have to go to college for that, because you could not do that at a CNA level. If your 18 and you don't have a considerably well paying job, I think you could qualify for financial aid, grants or if that isn't an option, you could always get a student loan and start paying it back when you graduate and start working because you should be making pretty good money by that time. I believe that if there's a will there's a way if you want it bad enough. Best of luck to you!
