Hate to call you out on this but you are being mean spirited. Respectfully, please link the evidence that med surg is the only foundation for nursing.. and that the only way to find ones niche is through diversity of work and working a job you hate. Where does this idea come from that nurses need to earn the right to have 9 to 5 jobs... Easy to be hostile behind the anonymity of the Internet huh. Might do you well to read over your nursing code of ethics.

Great post. Many excellent nurses do not find med surg floors to be a rewarding experience. And the thinking that med surg is the foundation of nursing practice is old thinking that isn't more than someone's opinion. Lots of people I graduated with hated med surg and went on to specialize in other areas successfully without it. I personally started my career in subacute hospital nursing that had a more healthy pace of work. But my favorite new grad job was in a hospice which was a wonderful experience with a slower pace of work and a focus on treating patients and family well...holistically. It was lovely. I'm on a med surg floor now and I quite dislike it as do most I work with. There is lots of good advice on this post. Ignore the haters who find their way into every workplace and post. I believe a good manager is more interested in hiring the right person and training them rather than someone who may be experienced but has a poor attitude. Research supports this and I say go for whatever is most appealing to you!

hey there, just popped in to say that it's important for nurses and nursing students to be supportive of eachother. nursing is really stressful and sometimes there is lateral violence between nurses believe it or not. this type of stuff is called nurse bullying and many times the people causing the distress don't even realize they are being insensitive. just putting it out there that we really need to treat eachother like we want to be treated, and to be extra careful not to cause harm. anyways, i just thought i'd put it out there. good luck everyone!

thx for your offer difindo. congrats on almost being done, what a relief that must be! i'm doing the interview. i know you are bound to confidentiality about it, but i wondered... how much did you prepare beforehand? was the interview what you had anticipated it to be? how happy were you with your interview performance? did you feel you prepared well, or not enough? how long did it take for you to hear back about your acceptance? i think i read somewhere that we can read the questions over for a couple minutes before we answer them. is a pen and pad provided to organize points to discuss while we wait to answer? many thanks!

Hi, I'm a student and I'm trying to answer a question: Husband is translating for wife who is the patient. He is making decisions on her behalf and isn't really translating everything. It's hard to tell what she thinks because she doesn't speak a work of English. How do you proceed in a respectful way? Thanks!

I feel your pain. I've worked in Michigan the past 10 years, 6 years with my MSW and nothing has really come of my career. I'm applying to nursing programs now after alot deliberating. I should have done this years ago. Most recently, I was working in a community health agency doing long term care social work getting paid 36 000/year (!!??). The associates level RNs were getting paid more to do the same case management paperwork type job. There are so few well paying social work jobs I think you'd have better luck winning the lottery than finding one. Good for you for realizing this now. Good luck!

thank you for your reply. i'm applying to nursing school for this fall. i think you're right. i recently applied for a geri-psych social work job that i didn't get, but there was a nurse there as part of the team and i thought her job was really interesting. i think having a nursing degree would add a ton of useful medical info that i think people need when working with older people who are ill. thanks for your vote of confidence!

hi, i'm a canadian msw in social work for 10 years now. i've enjoyed social work for the most part, but i'm finding it really difficult to find a good job to settle into. and the good jobs seem to be hospital based/healthcare. i have a genuine interest in helping others and making the world a kinder place, and that's why i'm considering nursing. plus i think my msw would be a good foundation for nursing. i like working with older people, vulnerable populations, poverty etc. and i wonder if nursing provides these opportunities too? do nurses feel they can make a difference in the lives of society's most vulnerable members? also, i'm not one to faint at the site of blood, but i'm not going into nursing for the blood and injections. do these things get easier with time and practice? also, do nurses ever feel like they are just pushing medications? also, does anyone have any advice on how to job shadow a nurse? i know i've asked alot of questions, but any advice is helpful. thank you in advance!
