The plain and simple answer is that the US aggressively recruited nurses from the Philippines and it became a way to immigrate to the US. US immigration was and still is a big deal to Filipinos, so if the demand was for nurses, you became a nurse. Filipinos also work in other countries such as Singapore, Japan, UK and middle eastern countries mainly because the pay is better than in the country. I happen to be Filipino but I'm a US citizen. Just happened to choose this profession.

Highest paid area is the bay area in CA ($45-50). Of course it's VERY hard to find jobs in high paid areas, especially for new grads.

I shadowed a wound care nurse today and witnessed something odd. A pt had a tumor taken out of her leg and had one end of the long incision scar open for wet-to-dry packing. The nurse had me look inside as she was changing the dressings and I noticed what looked to be a staple inside. She pulled it out and it looked like half of it had been embedded in the new healing tissue. She then tossed it and said it wasn't a big deal. But is it really? What if we never saw it? Would it have stayed in and might there be more? I can't really think of a reason why it would have been left in there.

I'm a 4th semester SN and I have a lot of friends who have already graduated and have not found jobs. It doesn't help that I'm in an area where most hospitals have hiring freezes. I've been told that a lot of the grads from the last class that got jobs did so because of their externships or they knew someone at the hospital. Has anyone here found their job because they knew someone at the hospital? I have a family friend who is the Director of Revenue Cycle Operations in a hospital at the other end of my state, and I'm willing to move. Do you have to know an actual RN in the department, or do you think my connection might suffice? I'm not really sure what that job entails or how important it is. Thank you so much!
