One bad egg...
I can understand both sides of the story. As a student we were required to wear our lab coats when entering the hospital, when leaving, and also with dress clothes the day prior to clinical to obtain our assignment. Of course our patch was on the left shoulder, but still, many people overlooked it. I was actually mistaken as a doctor, just because I was wearing my lab coat and dress pants. If I were a student in that facility, I would take notice that all the RNs were wearing lab coats and remove mine. In my program it was expected of us to differentiate ourselves from the staff, that was just common sense. As students, we are not practicing nurses. The families deserve to know who is who. How confusing would it be for both nurses and students to look the same?? Also to note, even if the nurses on the floor were rude (which was rare at my clinical site), we were always always always expected to act respectful and professional, and acting otherwise involved consequences with our CI or with the school. The student should have done like she was asked. I agree that it could have been handled better on both sides, but I have seen and been in school with students similar to the one mentioned in the OP, and it seems these select few will always blow things out of proportion when they are told something they don't want to hear.

New Grads: Don't give up hope
Hey everyone! I will try to make a long story short! I'm a new graduate, ADN, graduated August 2010. In school I was always told, "you will have no problem getting a job" "things will be great"....2 years and a degree later things definitely not that easy. Especially with an ADN (Where I'm at BSN is preferred) ....I finished school in one state and moved to another state 2 weeks later. I knew I was going to have a tough time in the most rural area of the state that I moved to with a my home state license (I haven't switched primary address yet). Obviously most people will look out for residents of their state before someone who just moved and hasn't even switched their primary address. But anyway, on with the story. I began my job hunt before I moved, several months in advance actually, being a August graduate not too many new graduate positions were open anywhere, and the new grads from May had already been placed in the hospitals that were willing to take on new graduates. Finally I was licensed in Sept, and I really stepped up my job search. I was determined to get a job, even if it meant calling the HR of hospitals until they answered and sending emails over and over again until I got some sort of response. (Be polite of course!!:)) Yes, being aggravating is not something that I would normally like to do. But.....it works. Trust me, these facilities at least knew who I was. I would fax resumes with "ATTN NURSING RECRUITMENT" then call asking "did you receive my fax?" Or call and ask "'I wanted to follow up and see if my application was received'..continue with..'I am extremely interested in your facility, I can relate to your mission, etc (DO RESEARCH ON THE FACILITY!!!)'" Also stress flexibility and that you are willing to start on any floor! There are soooooo many people seeking employment, you HAVE to make yourself stand out! Let HR/NR (nursing recruiters) KNOW how MUCH you want to work for them. Think of all the applications HR receives everyday, some qualified, some new graduates, some even overqualified. No matter what level of experience one may have, HR may be willing to give someone a chance who actually seems like they want the job, not just applying and waiting for a call. I had a friend who called the HR dept at a very large hospital, finally he was transferred to a NR who stated "I'm glad you called, well over half of the applicants DON'T call or even follow up." This NR now knows his name. I decided to write this because I've been there; down in the dumps, sad, worried, thinking "I am ever going to get a job?" The answer is, yes you will get work; it may take time, but stay positive, show excitement and eagerness, moreover be honest, be yourself. I am shy, I was scared to call all these hospitals, but I got over it, I wanted to be a nurse to make a difference in lives of others, in order to do this, I had to find somewhere to work. Good Luck to all the New Graduates out there, don't give up hope! :) I finally got a job almost 3 months after graduation! It took a lot of work and dedication but its worth it in the long run.

How does PRN work?
Thanks sassy_cassie! I appreciate the feedback! I think this is similar to the program I am starting in a few weeks. I was trying to get an idea of how prn scheduling worked in some places. :)

Peds Interview!! A few questions!
Would it be a bad idea to bring in stickers for the kids? I wonder if it would be considered unprofessional. I told my little sister I had an interview to work with sick kids and she said "Oh you have to bring them a present pleaaasssseeee!"

Peds Interview!! A few questions!
Hey Allnurses! I had a med/surg interview last week, but I got a call today for another interview, in peds! I thought the med/surg job would be a dream, but peds, unbelievable!! Im so incredibly excited!! I'm a new grad, but I worked in a preschool during the summer, which I hope will be an advantage. I was a directors assistant, but basically ran the preschool while the director was doing lesson plans. I love kids, their outlook on life, their excitement, I really would be honored to become a peds nurse! I told the nurse manager that I had an interview last week, I hope it didn't hurt my chances, but I hate to be offered the med/surg job while waiting to hear something about the peds position. I'm going up against a few other nurses, which increases my nervousness since I'm just a new grad. I'm young, energetic, and get super happy just about all the time, but also can think quickly during an emergency. I hope this are positives in peds. Any suggestions? I really want this!! I'm a little concerned about scenario questions. I know ABC's are priority, but I'm hoping I won't freeze up when asked! Thanks yall! :) :) :)

Interview to Job Offer?
Hey everyone! :) This is my first time actually posting on allnurses, but I have always used it as a support system while in school and while studying for the NCLEX. Ok back to the question! I interviewed on Monday for my dream job, I am a new grad RN, with no nursing experience other than clinical (no prior work experience either, I just turned 21). The hosptial system is amazing I hope the interview went well; it honestly felt like a friendly conversation, my nerves left as soon as I met the recruiter, he was soo nice. The interview wasnt at the hosptial so I was unable to tour or meet the nurse manager, so the interview lasted about an hour. Towards the end of the interview he asked me if I would feel comfortable doing this, that, etc. We reviewed the salary that I would be making and did a run through of all the benefits. Before leaving he asked me for my references and said he would call them the next day. I gave my references a heads-up on the drive home and I got the word that the recruiter had called them hours after the interview. But its Friday and I still havent heard anything! I'm really starting to get nervous! The only thing that is keeping my hopes up is the fact that this recruiter is in charge of hiring/interviewing for 4-5 hospitals. Should I call Monday? Is it a bad thing I havent heard anything? Any insight? I'm still so new to everything I would appreciate any feedback! Thanks!!
