  1. I think the point of the exercise is to give us more responsibility. The instructor is there over seeing everything, but she wants the leader to lead a team and be able to direct care, and help problem solve together kind of like RN's do on the floor. Also it really stresses how important getting a good report is, and giving a good report. The instructor is not involved in getting report and never has been, they go over what information we need in report, what info we should be reporting ect, but never have they gotten report and gave it to us!! I am not asking or expecting anyone to stay longer, or take time away from there busy morning, but in my mind taking an extra what 3 minutes out of your morning to give me a report which will allow me to be able to give quality and safe care to your patients would kind of make your busy morning and day a little less busy..... I think the experience was amazing and eye opening. It was nice to have responsibility, and really showed the importance of communication. Remember this is our last semester we are going to need to learn sooner or later how to get and give a good report and have more responsibility... Ehhh I guess it was also a lesson on being assertive, and able to problem solve. I just think some of the nurses need to take a step down memory lane and remember what it was like. We have to report to our instructor remember what that was like? Cause most of the time I feel like I am being burned on the stake when I don't know something that "I should have gotten in report" And honestly would it be that hard to maybe go out of order with report off? Ehhh I don't know
  2. Very true!!! I actually have a little journal type book that I write things like that in. I try not to fill it up with negatives though and like to make notes on the people (nurses, doctors, pcts, therapist ect.) that I admire and hope to be like. I also work as a PCT and one thing I have learned is "thank you" goes a long way! The nurses on my regular floor won't even call the PCT's by name let alone say hi, bye, or any type of conversation! When I floated for a bit, and now that other floors are closed and more RN's are floating I realized RN's from other floors were so respectful and well just nice. The first day I floated all of the nurses leaving for the night came up to me called me by name and said thank you! I was shocked (literary experienced tachycardia, tachypnea, and hypertension.... I recently had a test on shock)! I will always remember that feeling, and even more so I'll remember what my mom always said to me "Be careful on your way up the ladder.... you don't know who you'll run into on your way down!" One thing I have learned is to remember names especially house keeping, and dietary when I need something for a pt I rarely have to wait and I believe it is because I always say hello and ask about their day and call them by name.... well off to bed clinical at 7 am tomorrow
  3. Thank you all so much!!! It is hard to be present for every report because they are all going on at the same time all in different areas on the floor. example: today I was "modular leader" so I had a team of me and 3 other students 1 student had 3 pt the other 2 had 2 each, so I needed report 3 different nurses on 7 pt. I just don't see how I can split myself up and get them all. I understand it must be hard for the nurses to deal with the students on the floor, but some of them are just kind of nasty for instance one report I got from a nurse was what the IV was and rate, and that the J-P was draining.... as I'm running after her asking her questions that she I guess didn't hear. I just feel like if certain nurses don't want students they should make it clear and discuss it with there manager, or the instructor. Most of the time it makes the students look dumb when the RN tells us one thing, or never tells us then when questioned by the instructor about it tells her another. I don't know I guess I should just grin and bare it! I've made it this far, and have only been on one floor that was excepting of the students and that was because they were pretty much all recent grads from my school. Just a rant, but again thank you for the advice!!!
  4. Hello.... I am currently in my last semester of nursing school and seem to be having trouble giving and receiving report from my nurses. I always feel like I am a bother, or am just being given the bare minimum to get me out of their way! I normally try to come in early so I can sit in on change of shift reports, but sometimes all of my patients have different nurses and they all do report at the same time, or I am just in the background trying to be involved!?!? I am just not sure how to be assertive and get the proper report any tips? I just feel like some of the nurses treat me like its my first time on the floor I would really appreciate any tips Thanks
  5. HeHe I really like that!! It made me smile and let me tell you I need all the smiles I can get! I have gotten away with having AMAZING clinical teacher until now and of course it is my last semester! I feel like I am being eaten very slowly and cry every day I have clinical, but I guess you will always encounter negative people in your life so I'll take it as a learning experience on how to deal with such negativity, and dislike!
  6. Hi just curious if anyone else has difficulty getting reports on there pt. from the RN's. I always seem to not ask the right questions and miss out on information!!! Or am pushed aside like I am a bother or something! I try to listen in when the night rn reports to the day RN but sometimes I have 3 pt each with a different RN and they all do report at the same time! How can I be in 2 places at once!?! Then when I ask a question I am given very simple basic answers.... I am in my last semester and still feel like I am being treated like I'm in my first. I guess I need to be more assertive, I am just not sure how to be. Any tips?
