  1. THose of you who are claiming of taking training a few days before changeover have extremely incompetent management staff. It took Johns Hopkins 10 years to implement the system. I work at the largest teaching hospital in the country and EPIC has taken 28 months to train everyone.
  2. EPIC is successful if the Hospital that purchases it has good management. If management is detached and clueless then EPIC can be an EPIC disaster. Our hospital has been implementing epic of 28 months. ALL bedside staff are REQUIRED 24 hours of EPIC training PRIOR to "go Live". Hospitals that just "buy" the system and think the IT staff can teach people how to use it will have HUGE problems. If a hospital doesn't have a competent IT staff (very competent) then it will be very problematic. Hospitals MUST upgrade their IT servers and hardware space to accomodate EPIC. EPIC is a MASSIVE system that requires lots of computer horsepower to run. Freezing up is evidence that IT is not working. ALos EPIC is a physician based system. My hospital is going to limit verbal orders for Doctors to FORCE them to enter their own orders. It worked at Johns Hopkins it will work at our place. Our Hospital is 1000 beds and is University based so we will be transferring 158 years of medical records into the system. Last I heard it was over 10 million medical files. I do know my hospital system spend nearly a million dollars to upgrade the It Hardware system. If your hospital is having problems with EPIC freezing up...then you got problems with management being incompetent at understanding the modern medical world.
  3. but. I offer pascals wager. I am an orthodox (little O) Catholic (big C). From an escatological standpoint...consider this.. believe or not which one is worse to be incorrect at? If you believe in life after death and it aint true then you are just a fool in this life. But what if the opposite were true? What if you (like most of the posters here) don't believe..and er eh..are wrong? Better to be a fool for a few decades then a fool for eternity. I offer all of you to simply contemplate it. If I am right you are all in big trouble...if I am wrong I am simply just a fool and have nothing to really lose. Another questions is to ask why people are so uncomfortable with such talk. Why do you feel uncomfortable with "religion" most people have their consciences dictating that one. And people wonder why the profession is going down the tubes.
  4. I Have no Idea how long you have been a nurse but I worked during the "crap on the nurses era" and will never forget it. It is the hospitals problem to worry about staffing not yours. Unless you make 6 figures and play golf with the other Hospital CEOs and administators you can assume that it is their problem to cover for the short staffing. Take the dream job. and don't look in the rear view mirror.
  5. I have worked for the university of IOwa for about 11 years now. I have read in other posts that the pay here is low. I beg to differ. I drive 75 miles to work at the university for the pay. I live about 50 miles from Des Moines and cannot find anyone within $12,000/yr in salary. That coupled with 5 weeks paid a year and 11 holidays and TIAA cref retirement they put in 2 bucks for every 1 of mine into 401K type account. Sounds like an adverstisement but I Know some nurses that are pulling OVER 80K here. Yes overtime but we are unionized and it is NOT mandatory so their pay was self inflicted. If you don't believe me go to the DM register state salaries page and look up some salaries in the 80K range. You will see that several of them were Staff Nurses at UI.
