We have used Wong for years, but are switching to Bell and Binder, Child Health Nursing (Pearson). Students have reviewed this book and felt it was more clear and direct. It is easier to assign reading if you teach by systems.

I work in an ADN program and we require 4 care plans along with a case study and some short assignments each semester. I find students just cut and paste regardless of how the format is changed. This becomes an extensive amount of reviewing, but I don't think students are getting true benefit from it. We have tried concept maps and did not find them to be of much more benefit than care plans. Are there other assignments that truly help students with understanding the theory concepts and how they are adapted into clinical situations without being so long for them and for faculty doing the reviews? I have looked on the QSEN website and am using some of those ideas, but am not sure if we are asking more of students than is realistic for a semester. Any feedback?

Hi, I'm new to Med/Surg. When caring for a patient with a tracheostomy (long-term) who is able to speak without covering the opening, do I give inhaled medications like Spiriva or Advair through his mouth or through the trach? It seems like it would go through the trach, but the medication says it is for oral use only. What is recommended? Thanks.
