  1. Yep August 13 sounds right to me too. I just add 9 months and 7 days to last period. My last period was 26th September and I'm due 3rd July. Congratulations and have fun telling the family! We will be telling extended family over Christmas too. (the close family already know)
  2. My daughter is 22 months and we also have this problem. I never look forward to dinner time as I put the plate down in front of her and she digs her hands in, looks up at me and says "ohhh YUCK mummy" but now that she is old enough to understand things a bit more I just say "oh you dont want it? ok, down you get then while I finish my dinner" and thats the end of it. If she doesn't want what I cook, she goes without. (Mind you she has worked this out and just tends to fill up on breakfast and lunch so she wont HAVE to eat dinner which usually involves vegies etc) She will eat everything when she goes to my parents house though - dad will make vegetable soups etc and she'll eat 4 bowls of the stuff....just not for ME! My mum tells me I was exactly the same when I was two - wouldnt eat anything orange and wouldnt eat much of anything else. But nearly 20 years later I eat anything and everything, so Im not too concerned. My partner on the other hand eats steak, potato, bread, mandarins, apples, watermelon, peanut butter and vegemite. Think thats all.... and yes same rule goes for him, if he doesnt eat what I cook, he can get his own! :)
  3. I don't think I agree with that "rooming in" policy where you dont get a choice! I had an emergency caesarian and for the first few days it was very difficult to get in and out of bed. My partner was working while I was in hospital so he could take time off once we got home, so alot of the time I was there on my own. My daughter was often in the room with me which was fine when she was asleep, but once she woke up hungry and was crying, there wasnt a lot I could do except buzz and wait for a nurse/midwife to come and help me out of bed! When they were busy this often took awhile. Most nurses were happy to take her to the nursery over night, but a couple did try to tell me I needed to keep her in my room or I wouldn't "bond properly". Well I just buzzed until another nurse came who would take her to the nursery. By day 5 when I was discharged I was able to get in and out of bed on my own and could look after her fine at home. And I'm happy to say we had no trouble "bonding". It amazes me when some nurses think they always know what's right. I breastfed my daughter but she was given two bottles in hospital before my milk came in, both of which I had to sign for. To give bottles to breastfed babies without the mother knowing should definately stop, regardless of whether it causes problems or not.
  4. Well, we got through about 6 wks staying healthy and now she has another ear infection. Just wanted to get some opinions again.... the Dr has put her on antibiotics again and said to come back in 6 days because he thinks we'll have to do more than one course of antibiotics to get rid of the infection. I've never heard of doing this? I'm just concerned about how many times she's been on antibiotics this year. Poor kid wont get a chance to build up immunity to anything.
  5. My mum had a mammogram five years ago and they gave her the all clear. She asked for an ultrasound which found the cancer and she had a mastectomy (sp?) a week later. Five years on she is perfectly healthy :) On this topic, if you have breast cancer in your immediate family what age is it recommended you start going for mammograms? My mum was 47 and a dr told me recently it is recommended you start 10 yrs before the age of the relative? But with people much younger than mid-thirties diagnosed I'm wondering if it should be done earlier?
  6. Thanks for your help - I ended up giving it to her when she woke up during the night with some milk and toast. I'm really starting to wonder what is wrong with her though. Today she has been miserable all day, screaming for hrs at a time. My dad came and got her a couple of hrs ago to give me a break, and said she has been so distracted at their place that she hasn't cried at all. Maybe its teeth - I cant WAIT for it to pass whatever it is.
  7. I ended up putting her to bed because she was SO grumpy I couldn't bare it any longer. I figured if last night was anything to go by we'll be up most of the night anyway so I can give it to her when she wakes up. It's amoxil...I'm actually kinda disappointed the dr put her on it, I think sometimes they just give antibiotics because they dont know what else to do. But I'm not a dr and really have no idea so I didn't feel like I could argue with him and say he didn't know what he was doing!!!!!! But the problem is she's had three ear infections in the last couple of months and now its her throat, and I'm worried she's going to build up more resistance to antibiotics than anything else.
  8. Thanks for your help, but I really can't keep her up much longer. I've had enough trouble keeping her amused long enough to have dinner. She slept one hour today, and about 5hrs in the last 24hrs. It's driving me absolutely crazy but I guess it's just a matter of waiting it out. Maybe I'd be better off skipping the dose for now because I dare say she'll be up again several times tonight so I could give it then??? But then, the dr said to give it with food and I'm not keen on giving her food in the middle of the night...could turn into a BAD habit.
  9. I posted this in the paediatric forum but I dont think theres many people on there at the moment so thought I'd give it a shot here. Hi, I've just got a quick question. My daughter is 20 months old and on antibiotics three times a day, but this morning I completely forgot to give it to her. I've been in a zombie like state all day after only getting 3hrs sleep. She had first dose at 11am, second dose at 4pm, now it's 5:30 and shes about to have dinner (usually I'd give her a dose with dinner) so should I give the third one now? She will have to go to bed in an hour so I could give it just before bed, or should I just skip it altogether???? I'm just not sure whether its ok to basically give her 2 within a couple of hrs??? Thanks in advance for any help!

  11. My daughter was 9lb 5oz two weeks early. I was measuring around 4 wks ahead from 30wks pregnant. No diabetes...just from a family of big babies, and yes I'm already worried about the size of my future babies!!! My younger sister was 12lb 8oz and no GD there either.
  12. Thanks for your help so far! I'm definately hoping to get a decent prac in paediatrics at some stage in this course..so I guess I'll just have to cross fingers! I'm at QUT...I guess I'll try to talk to someone there and see what info they can give me, but I might wait till after exams for that!!!!!! The reason I haven't really thought about Rural hospitals is because of my 18 month old daughter who will be 4 when I graduate. Then there's my partner who is still living in Sydney at the moment due to work....so I'm hoping either that he will get a job up here, and we will stay here, or otherwise we'll move back down to Sydney when I graduate.
  13. Hi, I'm wondering if any fellow Queenslanders can give me any info about jobs after graduating...and anyone from NSW feel free too because I might just move back to Sydney..who knows! I'm doing Undergrad Nursing at the moment, but I'm wondering about what else I'll need to do before I can get the jobs I'm after!! I haven't completely decided what I want to do yet, but I'd love to get into Paediatrics, Neonatal or Midwifery. For all of these areas, do I need to do a Graduate diploma etc? and how long does that take? Or do you need to do a few years of General Nursing first???? Thanks for any info! I've been looking around on the Uni websites, but cant seem to find anything specific!!!
  14. Thanks everybody for their replies! You've all given me alot to think about... Firstly, about our house...I'm a full-time student and at the moment my partner is living interstate for work basically making me a single mum, so I can assure you it isn't "super-clean"!!!!! However, it is a fairly new place, and I can't see any visible signs of mould etc. It is interesting that a couple of you have mentioned that though, because for the first 16 months of her life we did live in a brand new place, so maybe that didn't give her the usual exposure to "bugs" etc. About the antibiotics...I have tried to avoid them as much as I can, she's never had antibiotics for colds. But once it develops into a middle ear infection I thought it was neccessary?? Or so our dr's led me to believe??? I'd be interested to know if this isn't the case. We ended up with a new Dr today, as she has another middle ear infection and again he put her on antibiotics. However, he did say that our move and her starting daycare would have exposed her to so many new germs which would explain the constant colds. The colds aren't really a problem since she would be building up immunity each time...it's only when it develops into these ear infections that I get worried. He said some kids just have "shorter" tubes...making them more prone to the infections. I'm hesistant about changing her diet since up until we moved she had none of these problems, so I really don't think it is allergies. It's so hard seeing her sick all the time...and I'm getting exhausted since we are up during the night so much Oh and what exactly do ENT's do?? I will have to look into that....is that basically looking into whether she does have a problem with her ears making her more likely to get ear infections?? Thanks again for your help!
  15. oh thanks :) thats a beautiful cat you got there too!! pic was 18 months ago obviously....
