First off: thank you for the responses! I think birth center or home birth would be closer to the route I'd like to go! As far as extra experience or a job, do you think PICU or NICU would be good places to work while working towards my CNM? Or just the labor and delivery unit? What would I do as an RN in that unit (my duties and such) :) ? Thanks again!

Just wanted to say this is a great topic ! I too was looking into PC and Docs w/o Borders and this extra info is fantastic ! Thank you !
  3. Maybe you can invite them to come out to your campus for a dinner or something? I know I wouldn't be able to contain myself over such good news!! But going home might be the nicest thing for you and your parents to celebrate in a loving environment!! Best wishes and prayers
  4. Sorry it's been so long since I've responded!! But I would encourage you to look into social work or maybe something along the lines of counseling? It would probably be a lot more enjoyable for you if you didn't have to deal with the physical pain aspect!!! Then again, once when I was watching a plastic surgeon work on removing a skin cancer spot I had to leave the room and sit down. He later told me the same thing happened to him when he started and he had gotten ill over the sight... but it eventually faded!! Just have faith and go for your dreams!!!

Hi all! So I just wanted to ask, if I may, (and hopefully this is the right place to get some answers!) about how to become a midwife! I'm working towards my BSN right now... but what about after that? What area should I focus on or try to get a job in after I graduate?? Thanks!
  6. Just to let anyone else know, they have a two year waiting list: FORGET THAT!! I applied to Ursuline and was accepted! I start this Fall. Such a better move in my opinion. Not only will I have a BSN when I graduate, but I also won't have to wait an un-Godly amount of time and forget everything I've learned thus far.
  7. In my opinion, it doesn't matter if you are wiping butts or administering life saving medications... you are HELPING people. And that is more than most of the world can say.
  8. I posted another topic recently but this just has to do with lifestyle. My main concern is my 1 year old dog I recently rescued. I won't graduate until around Spring 2014 (most likely) so this is a far off concern. But if I do go military, what will my days be like? Will he be left alone for long periods of time or can I work my schedule to be able to come home at a decent hour. Also, what is traveling like? Do you have time to get adjusted to the area you live in or is the PX as far as you travel ;P ?
  9. I would for sure talk to someone who is currently in the military about this and encourage you not to view the army as an "easy way out" so to speak. Like nurse2033 said, if you join solely to have a way to pay for school, it's probably not going to be very much fun. Also, if you are married I'm fairly sure that they have away-from-family bonus and such, but again, it's a choice that has to be made as a unit in that case.
  10. Hello everyone! I am currently waiting to hear back from a 4 year program (it would take me three years with my transfer credit) and am hoping to receive my BSN from there. My thoughts are turning towards joining the army as a nurse once I finish. My questions are mainly about lifestyle. I recently adopted a dog who has been a great addition to my family (I still live at home) and I'm worried that if I join that he will be left at home for too long. Does anyone else army have this problem? Do you feel like you have enough time to really "live" outside of your job? Or (working in a military hospital) do you find it much like a civilian hospital setting would be? I would like to eventually go for my CNM and am hoping the army would be able to help me achieve this goal. As a CNM, would I have enough work in the military? Would it only be soldier's I would attend to or could it also be their families (particularly the wives-!) ? Also, I've grown up around the military (lots of grandparents, uncles, and cousins have joined different branches) but never really learned much about protocol. Did you learn about etiquette, terminology, and routine through classes? That's just a few to start with :] ! Thanks! :heartbeat
  11. I just was curious as to what your reason to want to be a nurse is? Have you looked into other professions that aren't medical but still deal with helping people?? Also, is it only physical pain, or do you take into account mental pain?
  12. So now people say it's a 2 year wait? How could I possibly wait two years? That's almost 6 years for an associates degree? Is anyone else crying bull at this? If I don't get it, I don't know what I'm going to do. Nursing is all I want to do...
  13. good luck!! I was thinking about filling the time by going to their Nurse Aid classes and doing that for a while. I didn't realize when I decided to transfer how incredibly busy their program is!! But I've heard such great things about their nursing program and can't really go back to my old university now... so... I hope anyone who applied starts asap!
  14. Reading this makes me nervous, I applied this summer to go in the Spring, but am taking the Sociology class online (transfer student and it wasn't required at my old school). But I came from a good college, got great grades, I really feel like I did super well... but I can't imagine having a whole year off of school, not to mention all the bills from financial aid from my past two years of school starting to pile on when I'm not a full-time student
