Safe temperature and humidity
Thank you for your response Rose_Queen. My charge did notify our maintenance department as soon as I brought up the change in temperature and humidity. I am not sure if IC was informed. I did fill out a variance report once we were finished. Unfortunately, the rest of the evening was spent monitoring temperature and humidity. Our floors were completely wet and by the end of my shift sterile items contained moisture. Needless to say many instruments had to be sent back for processing and sterilization. Next month will mark my one year anniversary in the OR. I love it but feel clueless at times. Thank you for creating this forum!

Safe temperature and humidity
Good morning! I am looking for information on safe temperature and humidity ratings in the OR. I live in south Texas and just like most of the country right now it is very hot. Last night, right before I was to take back a patient for an orbital/maxillary fracture, our chillers went out. My surgeon was informed of the situation and the patient was in the room (I took the pt back before anyone knew exactly what had happened). Within 15 minutes the floors and cabinets in my room were sweating. We completed the surgery with a temperature of 73 and humidity level of 66%. It seemed like no one I was working with last night knew what the standard was for safe temperature and humidity levels. I don't want to be clueless on this topic again. Thanks in advance for any information about this subject.

Help getting in OR
Thank you everyone for your input, I am very appreciative of it! I wanted to update y'all. After patiently waiting these last couple of months, I was finally able to interview for a position at the hospital I am currently employed. I am excited to say a position was offered to me and I have accepted. I cannot wait to start this new endeavor!

Help getting in OR
Thank you all for the information. I am currently employed in the largest hospital in my area, a level 2 trauma center. As previously mentioned, I have been shadowing circulating nurses in our OR. I received a text message from the OR director last week regarding a position. I am now waiting to find out if the position was approved so that I may interview for it. I also received a call for an interview at the only Children's hospital in my area. I interview for the children's hospital today! 😲 I am so nervous!

Help getting in OR
Thank you for this. I am fully aware of not having as much patient contact as I do now. I have no disciplinary actions on file. My DON has told me I am an excellent nurse whose patients are always satisfied with my care. I did ask if there was anything on record when I spoke to him (DON) as he was my manager temporarily while they looked to replace my previous manager. I have looked and applied to positions outside my facility. I did get one call back but unfortunately the facility that called was looking for a nurse with trauma experience. I have tweeked my resume numerous times and even looked up example resumes. I am trying not to give up hope. Thank you Rose_Queen. í ½í¸Š

Help getting in OR
Hello all! I have been interested in working OR long before I became a nurse. I currently work on a busy ortho/neuro floor. I have been a nurse for three years. I have been trying for over a year to get into the OR where I work. I have submitted application after application for a position when it becomes available. I have recently shadowed in OR and submitted my application. I even spoke to our OR director who said she would get with the OR manager and set up a "behavioral interview". The holiday week came and I hadn't heard from anyone. I chalked it up to it being a holiday week and tried to be patient. It has been almost a month but I finally got the rejection message of "Thank you for your interest in..." I am beyond frustrated. I have changed my resume many times in hopes it would get picked up. I am sad and frustrated. Any advice is very much appreciated.

What is the Registered Nurse Patient Ratio at your hospital?
I work on an ortho/neuro unit. We're at 5:1 with the charge nurse at 4:1. When we're short staffed we're 6:1.

Ask an OR nurse (Questions about what we do or how to become one of us)
Thank you for this thread. I am currently working on an ortho/neuro unit in a hospital in South Texas. I graduated last December and do not yet have a full year of nursing under my belt. I am very interested in going to the OR. Does working in the OR allow for more family time? I currently work nights and feel I don't have enough time with my family. How different is Day surgery? Thank you for any reply you may have.

OK. Now that you said that, I think I sat not quite next to you in lab when we were with *** *****. Did you sit in front of the tub with the gait belts? I looked under documents and could not find it. My email is [email protected] if you don't mind sending me a copy.
