Staffing/Patient Ratios in your ED
I was curious what everyone's nurse to patient ratio is in the ED. Explain a little about your ED as well. I'll try to add a poll for those who just want to answer and not expand on their answer. I work in a metropolitan downtown ED, level 4 trauma. There are two level 1 trauma EDs nearby and 7 other level 4 trauma EDs within 20 minutes of us. Anyway we have 30 beds and have a 1:3 ratio in the trauma/code beds and a 1:4 in all other beds. So if you're working in rooms 1-6 you get 3 high acuity patients all at the same time. Or essentially you could have three codes going on at the same time. I think the assignments at this ED are unsafe, but this is the only ED I've worked at, so I keep my mouth shut. I'm curious though, what other EDs have to work with.

UTHSCSA Spring 2011 Hopefuls
Hey all, I just read the last 5 pages of posts, but I know I've missed more than that. Holy cow, this has been a busy semester! I just went to campus today to pay for classes and try to get a parking permit and ID. It's ridiculous! You can't get a parking permit until the first Monday in January and you can't get your ID until you've either purchased a parking permit or until orientation. That's so stupid, because it's going to be packed that first week in January! Well I have a Microbiology final tonight and an A&P final tomorrow morning and I am done! Woo Hoo! However, it's not that I'll get to relax, we're driving to MO to visit my in-laws and then my family is coming into town and then it's orientation week. I am, HOWEVER, so excited to nursing school to start! I've been wanting to go forever but after having my two munchkins, I thought I'd never get to go back to school!

OMGosh it was so funny! On Tuesday there were two other people in my Chem class that got in to the UTHSCSA SON too! I'm so excited to see more people on here! Has anyone received the hard copy letter yet or just emails? Well I'm taking Chem 1407, Micro and A&P II right now and I'm pretty sure my brain is going to explode, but... I'm so happy that I got in and that's what will keep me going these next few months! Congrats to everyone who got in!!

THis is weird to me that this board is so empty! All the other semsters have been packed with people posting. Weird. I wonder if it's any indication as to how many people applied this semester or if it's simply that not a lot of people know about this message board. Well I am dying to know if I made the cut. When I called to check that they received my TEAS scores, I asked when we'd be getting letters. They said the first OR second week of September. Gosh darn it, I hope they send them out the FIRST week. I'll die if I have to wait. Well I hope that I can find out before my birthday on the 11th, we're going out of town and I'll be so mad if the letter comes while I'm gone, not to mention that I will be thinking about it the whole time.

Keili30- That is most excellent investigative work there Watson! I looked on their website too but didn't find anything like what you found. Well it looks like both of us should be good to go (according to last semester's profile!). With a TEAS of 91.2 and a good GPS, I would find it weird for them to not accept you. A 91.2 must put you in the 99th percentile, right? That's perfect, average age is 25 and I'll be 25 on Sept 11! Woo Hoo, I'm so excited to be average! Well here's to waiting for the letters of ACCEPTANCE!

Hey Ladies, I haven't heard from anyone but I'm going to announce my TEAS results becasue I can hardly believe it! I got an 89.4%!! I hope that is good enough to make it. I have a 3.88 GPA but I know that they care more about the TEAS. I don't know, I was hoping for a 90% but I'll take the 89.4 I guess! Anyone else done with the TEAS?

UTHSCSA Spring 2011 Hopefuls
Well I don't know where everyone else is, but I am busy with my kids and my summer classes! :) I am signed up to take the TEAS on the 20th though, so I'll let you know how it went after I take it. Do we get results right away? I don't know... I am nervous, but excited to get this all done with! I just got two more A's this summer with my summer courses, so hopefully that helps a little too! I'll send in my transcript again to UTHSCSA. How are things going for you?

Yeah I got my invite today too! I am so excited! Unfortunately though I can't think about it right now, I have finals next week for A&P so I am studying my butt of for those. I'll get to studying for the TEAS after July 29th. Are you going to take it again, since you already took it? I was suprised to see that they'll let you take it more than once and accept the highest score! That might end up being me. If I don't get over a 89 on the first try, I am totally going to take it again. It's worthe the extra $100 or whatever. But I also have the practice test I can take online through ATI so that might be a good enough example that I shouldn't have to take it more than once. We'll see.... YEAH FOR THE NEXT STEP!!!

OH I AM SO JEALOUS that you got to go! I wanted to go so badly, but I had class at that time so I couldn't. Well thanks for all the info!! But the 30, 60, 5 percents only added up to 95 percent. Then you said the GPA should be 40 that makes it 105 percent. So you must have meant 35 percent for GPA I guess? Oh i hope that they get the letters out the first week of September, this wait is killing me. I guess I should get back into studying for the TEAS then! I was studying pretty hard for a month but then I got busy with my A&P class and havent' done it for a few weeks. If it's worth more than my GPA I should get back on that! Alright thanks again for giving some news on the status of everything!

I just called today and the admissions lady said that emails to take the TEAS test will be sent out the third week of July. I know you don't care since you've already taken it, but for the rest of us, this is important! :)

That's what I thought. But mine says "C" in the box and I have never gotten a C in my life. That's weird. Well whatever. Okay so you said that you went to an open house before, right? Do you know when they start telling people stuff? Because looking through the "UTHSCSA Spring 2010" thread, it looked like people weren't getting notified until late October. However when I went to the open house in Feb, they said that by late August we should know if we got in or not. Did they change something from last year to this year? I think I might just go to the open house again here in a couple weeks to ask them all my questions again. That will mess up a lot of things if I have to wait until October to find out if I got in, when I originally heard it was in August.

Does anyone know: on the Microsoft Excel sheet that they send you of your transcript review, what it the box that says "TASP/THEA-M" etc.... there are three little boxes like that. What is that for?

I know it sounds crazy. But actually it's not even my worst semster. I will have taken all 62 hours of pre-req's in only one year, it's been a killer trying to do them all. My husband actually jokes that nursing school should be a breeze after what I've put myself through in the last year! It was a race to get into nursing school though, hubby is military so I have no choice but try to get through school as fast as possible before we get sent somewhere else! I appreciate the chance to be able to go back to school, I love college so much, I am so grateful that I have so much support. That will be SO NICE to only have one class in the fall! You'll be all ready to start nursing school (I'm sure you'll get in!) in Jan! I'm getting to the point where I wonder if I'll end up being too exhausted...

I am taking AP I and Acting right now, for summer semster. Then I am taking AP II, Chem II and Micro in the fall. Hopefully I wont die from brain injuries between now and then! I can't imagine my poor brain taking in all that knowledge all at once! Oh well. I shouldn't do too bad on the TEAS, I hope. I am strong in Math and English. But I am a slow reader, so I never seem to be able to finish those sections on exams, which drops my grade. Then I should be okay in science, but I haven't taken geology or life sciences since like 9th grade, so that's what I worry about most! Good luck with your course load, it sounds tough as well!!

Yee haw! (I love typing that, but I've never said it in my life!) I got an email today saying that they reviewed my transcripts and I am eligible. That's good at least! I am seriously dying to take the TEAS though! I can't stand waits. And I'd really love to know my schedule (if I get in, that is!) for spring because I need several months to work out childcare for my little kiddos..... I hate the waiting game.... the next months are going to be miserable. At least I am still taking prereq's so that keeps me busy. I should probably be memorizing bones right now anyway.... BYE!

Holy Cow! That is a loong drive! So you don't have a lab on Wednesday? I thought a friend of mine said she had clinicals on Tue and lab on Wed but that was several months ago, maybe I go that wrong! So they choose every class time for you! Bummer, I was hoping I could choose a few of the times. Oh well. I wont complain! I'll just be excited it I can get in! I didn't know the open house was supposed to have a tour! I went to one in Feb and they didn't give a tour.... Hmm maybe I'll go to another one!

UTHSCSA Spring 2011 Hopefuls
Oh okay good! I was getting nervous there for a minute! So any tips you can give about handling the wait now?! These are going to be the longest months of my life! Like for instance, how long did it tkae for you to hear from them at all? How long was it until you got a letter to take the TEAS test, etc? Ooh and one more thing. What does your schedule look like approx.? Is it every day from 9-3 or how is it set up?

UTHSCSA Spring 2011 Hopefuls
This is so cool! I just found this little thread. So, hello everyone! I just submitted my application online on Saturday night and I called this morning to see if they received my transcripts from my two colleges. They said they had both transcripts, but the application hadn't been received yet. What are people talking about "personal statement"? I didn't have to fill out a personal statment when I turned mine in! Ahh! Just five other short essay questions. My stomach has been in knots ever since I submitted my application. I thought I'd be relieved, but I'm just more nervous! I have a 3.89 GPA so I hope I at least get a letter to take the TEAS... Here's to us all getting in! Woo Hoo! Or should I say "Yee Haw"!?
