Is this all my fault??
So I floated to a different floor the other day at work and had a 15 year old who had chron's but was admitted for a ruptured appy and was a few days post-op. He had a normal assessment in the morning and all of his vitals all day were in the normal range except for his HR which was elevated (150). I had noticed his previous HRs were a little high 120s but it was charted that the charge nurse and physician were notified. I didn't notify charge when the the HR was 150 because he was in the same PEWS category and all his other VS were normal. He was discharged from the hospital later in the day on my shift with everything being the same as it had been all morning. He seemed fine except for his elevated HR and the doctor had rounded on him before they wrote d/c orders. Well I got an email from the patient safety person today saying the kid had been re-admitted within 24hrs for sepsis and pneumonia and she asked why I didn't report his VS to the physician and wasn't I concerned with his HR. I wrote back that all of his other vs were normal, he was afebrile, he said he felt good and was ready to go home and he and his parents didn't have any concerns. So I didn't really think it was super critical. But now I'm wondering if I really messed up and should have said something even though everything else looked fine. I feel horrible and feel like this is all my fault. Was this something I really should have been super concerned with? Would you have said something? And do you think this is something I could get in trouble for? I'm just so sick to my stomach right now.

Pediatric Nursing in NYC?
Thanks for the response! He hasn't received any offers yet, but I'm keeping my eye out on the job market up there! I'll definitely PM you with more questions if he gets some interviews! I'm glad to know you were able to get some offers- it gives me hope :)

Pediatric Nursing in NYC?
So, my SO just graduated with a math degree and is applying for actuarial jobs in New York. We live in Texas so we would be relocating if he were to get hired up there, and I was wondering how hard it is to get hired at a pediatric hospital in NYC. I have a BSN, 3 years experience in pedi hematology/oncology and and have my CPN and APHON chemo certification. Ideally, I would like to stick with pedi H/O but am open to working almost anything pedi just so I wouldn't have to work adults. Suggestions? Thoughts? I haven't started applying anywhere yet until we know if he gets a job.

Anyone know what to expect for Parkland Dallas medication test (pre-employment)
@ TCU-trauma - congrats on getting the job! What position did you get? I just interviewed Monday for the NNICU residency and I was curious how long it was until you heard back from them? @Sar910 - I'm interested to know if you ended up getting the job??

parkland jan 2011 residency
I applied october 12th and onward as I saw positions posted. I never heard from anyone at Parkland so I called last week and was told generic info and "we will contact you if we're interested." I didn't want that to be the last I heard, so I emailed a person from the recruitment department saying that I was unable to get any information out of the phone call and how I would like to speak to a nurse recruiter directly to set up an interview. I was called back 5 hours later by a nurse recruiter who said it was odd that I hadn't received any call as I was one of the first people to apply for the jobs and that she could schedule me an interview next week. She also let me pick which department I wanted to interview for. It's the only interview I've had thus far, so hopefully I will get the job!

I've also applied at Parkland for their internships and have an interview on Monday. Any tips for me to help with my interview prep? And did you end up getting the job? Good luck with the job search!

Cook Children's Nurse Residency
Did anyone apply to the Cook Children's nurse residency program and get a call for an interview yet? I know the application deadline just passed, but since they are holding interviews next week I'm getting antsy!

Un-accepting position one week before start date
Typically a 'two-week notice' isn't mandatory, it's mainly just a curtsey. One week may seem like a short period of time, but you're under no obligation to give them more time. If this other job is what you've been waiting for and is a better opportunity for you then go get it! Don't settle for less when you're being offered more. The hospital you've been working at may be disappointed and try to make you stay, I'm sure they would understand that this is a better plan for you. It's not like they won't be able to fill your spot in an instant! lol Good luck with whatever you choose! :)

New jobs anywhere?
That's interesting. What hospital is/was hiring that many new people for the NICU? I'd love to know so I can apply! NICU is where I want to work. Were they hiring new grads or just RNs? Was t required to have experience in a critical care area?

Question about recommendation letters
I graduate in December and I'm about to start applying to a lot of GN residencies/internships. Most of the ones I've looked at require at least 2 recommendation letters or forms from two different instructors and in my case about half of those require that one of the instructors be my peds clinical instructor (since that is what I want to go into). My question is, do I ask the two instructors to write/fill out the recommendation and make like 10 copies, or do I ask multiple instructors to do the letters? What have you all done about letters? Thanks! :redbeathe

New jobs anywhere?
I totally agree with RN2BDFW. It's extremely hard for new grads to get jobs in big cities here in TX unless they are already working in a hospital or have prior hospital experience. Many of the big hospitals in the DFW area will cut you regardless of your grades and accomplishments if you don't have any previous hospital work experience. A lot of my friends who just graduated this May still haven't found any jobs here and aren't receiving interviews or anything. That makes me scared since I graduate in December! eeek My advice is to get some kind hospital experience, whether it be as a PCT, transporter, meal hostess or what have you. Even volunteering at a hospital is a good thing that recruiters look for!
