Curious about RNC
I am a nursing student in my second year and about to start my Ob clinical in the Fall. I work for an L&D unit at my local hospital and one of the nurses was studying for her RNC. What does this mean? What type of certification is this? I would just like some more information on this because I am considering OB after I graduate and would like as much helpful information as possible.

How does your facility deal with fetal demise?
At the hospital I work at we have a nurse who is certified as a grief counselor. We have have lots of materials for the parents to read and we put together a little box with a disposable camera that we take pictures of the baby on and the parents can develop it if and when they would like. Sometimes we even cut a little bit of the baby's hair and put it in a plastic bag. We just put some stuff together in a memory box that the parents can take with them. We also do a memorial service in May for all the babies that were lost through the year. Parents are also invited to this as well. I feel that our hospital does a good job at helping parents deal with fetal demise.

What makes a good L&D nurse?
I work as a Tech on the L&D unit at my local hospital and the things that I have noticed that have made the nurses there good at their job include: being prepared for anything and everything at any moment, having a strong passion for this particular type of patient care, always researching and being on top of the new medical technologies in that field, etc. You need to be able to deal with a slow pace or a fast pace. I have noticed that L&D can be very slow at one moment, but within minutes it can be very hectic. Just be ready to change your pace quickly. Not sure what type of hospital you will be going to for your L&D rotation so it could be hectic all the time.
