I just finished my very first class in my FNP program at Maryville University. It wasn't too bad, but it was definitely sink or swim. I don't have a scheduled class time, but I do have several assignments to complete each week and 35% of my grade is based on group work. So far, my group has been great. I don't ever have to go to the campus, which is nice. A colleague of mine is in her last semester at Simmons. I know she has to sit through online classes at a scheduled time and she had to go to campus for two weeks. I chose Maryville, because it's affordable and has a great reputation. It's around $39K. I think Simmons is around $50k. Other colleagues are looking into Grand Canyon, but the last time I checked they only had an acute care NP program online. They were working on having their FNP online program available to out of state students last year. Classmates of mine are attending Frontier University's FNP and nurse midwife programs. It is not legal for an MD to simply "sign on". Don't forget in the state of CA you have to have an NP, PA or Dr. perform the initial assessment. This document will answer most of your questions. http://www.mbc.ca.gov/licensees/medical_spas-business.pdf

It depends where you live and your state requirements. For instance, I live in the state of California where it is required that the Dr., an NP or a PA do the initial assessment. More and more medical spas are hiring NPs and PAs instead of RNs because of this. They don't want to pay an NP to do the assessment and then pay an RN to do the injections. Unless, of course, is it an extremely busy practice. But what NP wants to do only assessments all day? NP pay in aesthetics is significantly higher in CA at least $10-20/hr. NPs working for plastic surgeons, doing the aesthetic treatments, can make well over 6 figures. I am an aesthetic RN currently in an FNP program. Four of the six aesthetic RNs I work with are either in an NP program or applying to one. I Hope this helps.

I've been freaked out over the nursing care plans after speaking to a graduate about the program. Rayni22, Thanks for the info. I'm going there next week for my 2nd Hep B and a varicella titer. :) My understanding is that the Jump Start is two days of workshops to prepare us for the program. I know there is a math workshop for certain, but I'm not sure about the others.

Rayn22 the jumpstart is Aug 15 & 16 from 9am-5pm. Has anyone, who does NOT have health insurance, found an affordable place to get varcella and Hep B? I was able to get MMR, TB and T-dap for $10 at the local health clinic. But, they don't do varcella for adults and the cheapest I've been able to find is $100. Also Hep B is $80 x 3 = $260 total. Yikes! Thank goodness I went to the orientation last year so that I was prepared to have to spend well over $1,500 (immunizations/physical w/BBC & UA/drug test & background ck/CPR/books) before even starting the program! I felt bad for the people who were freaking out this year.

Calini - I'm fairly certain that I got in through the multicriteria application. I was put on the waitlist approx. 1 1/2 years ago. I received notice in the fall that I had gone from #809 to #330. That's a huge drop! I think Rayni22 said she's been on it for over 3 years and she just got in.

Congratulations! No confirmation. I emailed first and specifically asked for a confirmation, but I didn't get a reply. So, I called and they said I was already on for the 25th. Makes me nervous too!

I'll try to add you as a friend. We'll see if it works. :)

Thanks StudentLJinCA ! I'm so happy and relieved. Grossmont rejected me. When I went in to pick up my application I asked what the point cutoff was and the person I spoke with wouldn't tell me. She said that it wasn't entirely based on the point system, which I thought was state mandated. ??? I prefer City anyway because that's what I know. I did my prereqs there and I like the turquoise uniforms better! LOL! JK! Both schools are supposedly great. Congratulations to you too! Phew...We're on our way!

Apparently 81 is the magic number this year. I got into City this fall too with 81. Hurray! I only made alternate last year with the same score. I only needed 3 people to drop, but no one did. I'm not complaining though, this year actually works out a heck of a lot better for me financially. :monkeydance:

WOOT WOO! I got into City this fall. I don't know if it was from the wait list (It'll be two years in August) or the multicriteria. I don't care! Just when I'd given up all hope and started on my plan B. I had to read the email 5 times and then have my boyfriend read it. Faeriewand, do you have any advice on teachers. Those to avoid and those to try to get? Any advice at all will be appreciated. Thanks!

I guess the person who told me December was wrong. I just got a rejection email today. I can't believe that I didn't even make alternate. At SD City I at least made alternate. I have a score of 81 with the new multicriteria. My GPA is 3.8 it's so wrong that my sister-in-law who has a 3.0 only has one semester left in her program in Illinois! I wish I would have known how impossible it was going to be to get into these programs in CA. I never would've wasted years of my life and worked so hard to get those prerequisites done! I'm very angry and bitter now. Oh well, on to plan B...

When I dropped off my application in September, they told me I wouldn't hear anything until December via email.

I took the TEAS in March. In the science section most of my questions were chemistry! Chemistry, physics and a few anatomy and geology questions. Don't waste your time with the "dj,adverbs,pronouns, independent clauses, dependent clauses," But do study Vocabulary, commonly misspelled words and sentence structure (i.e. when to use a comma or a semicolon). There's also a website I used for vocab Study table about TEAS vocabulary 1 With math don't worry about roots/radicals. I don't even remember one question, but there are a lot of word problems and metric conversion. You have to do a lot of memorization, because they don't give you 2.54cm = 1 inch etc... You will most likely run out of time for the math so definitely set a quick pace. Yet, I had 45 minutes left for the reading!!!! How wrong is that! The reading is easy if english is your first language. I used three books to study: ATI, McGraw Hill and Kaplan College. Good luck! You'll be so happy when it's over!

I am an alternate for Fall '10 for SDCity's ADN program. Has anyone gotten in this way or have any idea what my odds are? I know I'll have a better idea when I attend the orientation on June 25th. I'm just trying to alleviate some anxiety by getting an idea. I want to get in so baaaad! Just like everyone else, I know. Thanks!

Thank you! I hope they give me a chance too. I agree this whole process if very frustrating . I'm still going to drop off the new application for Grossmont tomorrow just in case. Last I checked I was #800 and something on City's list! There's no way I'll ever get in off the waitlist. I was one of the last ones added before they changed the system. Same with Grossmont. I feel for you four years is just wrong! Have you thought of trying Riverside? If City and Grossmont don't work out, I'm trying Riverside. I'll move up there for two years and get it over with. They don't have a waitlist and they are taking applications in Sept-Oct for Spring '11 and Fall '11 Best of luck to you and everyone else on here.

I received an email today from Deb Berg saying that I was chosen as an alternate (don't know whether to be or ) and that I need to attend orientation on either June, 22nd or June, 25th. I don't think they're mailing out letters. Hopefully you've gotten an email today. I'm way down on the wait list, so I decided to compete academically. I think I had 76 pts. Does anyone know what the chances are for me to get in as an alternate?
