Hi, I actually chose critical care, its says there's 36 spots. I hope you get Med-surge! I really wanted that at first because I did my preceptorship there and I feel pretty comfortable there but in the long run I've always to be in the ICU or ED, so I was like what the heck..mind as well go all the way! haha...I really wanna know what the chances are and how many apps they received, I'm guessing a ton...however it turns out, Good Luck to you!!!!

Advice!
Thank you! Boise's kinda boring and isolated. Meridian and Boise are close to each other. Both are nice places to live. Traffic isn't bad at all but there is some traffic. Crime is super low as far as I know. I never lock my house or cars, since I didn't in Hawaii. Small town feel. Hardly rains, usually alot of sunshine. Snows alot in the winter but I like it. One year which was my 1st yr here in 2008 it snowed in October for a whole day straight. Weird. Super hot/dry in the summer, can get in the upper 90s low rarely low 100s. Cost of living is super low. One big/major mall. People are quiet, kind of friendly, keep mostly to themselves. Tons of outdoors stuff, which is the only thing I like about the place. Big Mormon population, but other religions as well. In my nursing class half of the class were Mormons. Some people in my class were kinda sheltered. Seemed like the only place they knew about was Boise, Idaho. Asked if Hawaiians still live in grass houses. My friends from Oregon and East Coast don't really like it here either but thats because they're from Bend (beautiful). Whats Oregon like? I was only there for 5 days and in those 5 days, I was exposed to so much more culture, diversity, and fun that I've experienced in the last 3 years living in Idaho. Other than that Idaho is great, just not for us. :)

Advice!
Yes, it is! :) St. Lukes is an awesome hospital. The one in downtown Boise was where I did all my clinicals, its the best! The one in Meridian is where I got hospitalized and the nurses and doctors were great. So either way you will love it! Its a great facility. I turned down an interview there because we don't see ourselves living here. It was either home (Hawaii) or Oregon/Washington. I live in Boise, but very close to Meridian, which is like 10min away. I'm graduating from Boise State. No, I applied to the Salem Hospital Internship program. I didn't consider Legacy because they told me they receive over 500 apps for only a handful of positions. I just stumbled across the Salem app and applied right before it closed. I visited Oregon during Spring Break and loved it! Except for the fact it rained alot, but the people made up for it. Everyone was so friendly, the state is beautiful, and I know some people from Hawaii that moved to Corvallis and love it, which is 30-40min drive from Salem, so I'm hoping and crossing my fingers that I hear back! I really really wanna move there!

Advice!
Hi! thats funny. I'm actually in Idaho, dying to get out! What hospital are you going to do your residency at in Idaho? I didn't get a job in Oregon, I'm hoping to get a job in Oregon for a new grad ER position. The recruiter said mid/end of May they'll start scheduling interviews if chosen. Salem Hospital had 60 new grad positions open in the ER/ICU for 4 days. To be considered 5pm was the deadline for the 4th day. Have you been to Idaho?
-
Advice!
Thank you guys. As much as I hate to hear it, the ER opportunity is probably the best decision. I've been away from home for 3 yrs, I'm hoping I can do it for another 1-2yrs. So much sacrifices to make, to get where I want to be in my career. Thanks for the reaffirmation, truly appreciated. :)

Salem Hospital Oregon Internship
Hey there, good luck to you too! I will let you know if I hear anything. I know they love new grads because they had like 60 positions open and I'm hoping to get at least get ONE! :) I applied for the ER/ICU one which had the most openings so we'll see what happens. I talked w/ a recruiter from another hospital in Oregon and she mentioned that when the programs start in August 1st things usually get things rolling mid/end of May, so I'm just trying to be patient. Alrighty, good luck! :)

Advice!
Hi guys, so I was wondering if I could get some insight into this slight dilemma I'm having. I graduate this May with my BSN. I'm currently an LPN and have been wanting to return home ever since I left Hawaii the past 3yrs working on my degree. I've called and called and there are absolutely no new grad RN jobs anywhere on the islands. A week ago my friend who works at Kaiser pulled some strings and I may have a job as an LPN. I also applied to an internship in Oregon that I have a good chance of getting into for an ER position, which has always been my dream from the start and what caused me to leave the islands. My question is, should I take the job as an LPN in Kaiser since I get to go home and be with my friends and family whom I've missed dearly or if offered should I take the ER position which is a a chance of a lifetime in Oregon. I'm not sure what professional developments Kaiser offers. All I know is I want to go home so bad and I want to be an ER nurse or work in the hospital for now. Any insight would be much appreciated. Thank you! :)

Job Market on Maui for New RN grad
yeah, my dogs and i were all set to go as far as quarantine stuff but unfortunately i got turned down for their new grad positions. I'm going to do a year here then try again. The other costs would've been inspections from Maui Clinic, plane tickets, health certifications, and kennels. The rabies clearances lasts for 3 yrs. Good luck! :)

Salem Hospital Oregon Internship
Hi, just wondering if anyone else that applied heard back or know when they might be conducting their interviews. They had the new grad position open for 4 days (April18th-22nd), so just wondering what might be going on now. Also, if you've applied before, how long did it take to hear back? panel interviews? experience w/the hospital??? any info would be great!!! thanks so much :)

Job Market on Maui for New RN grad
Hi Otessa, are you on the islands now? I know it would be better if I stayed in the mainland but I really want to be home with my family. Either way we're planning on leaving Idaho as we don't really enjoy it here and moving somewhere in the NorthWest or Rockies, so I'm wondering where the jobs would be. My main priority is that I find work ASAP but hoping it would be on Maui, and if not, then somewhere close to where I can go home easily. Thanks!

Job Market on Maui for New RN grad
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on the job market for new RN grads on Maui? I went to MCC in 2008 and got my LPN. I moved right after to Idaho and have been working on my BSN for the past three years. This May I graduate w/my BSN and plan to return home right after, which has always been the plan. I know the economy has been tough but it sounds like things are harder in Hawaii. All the info I'm reading is regarding 2008/2009, so I'm wondering how much has changed or not since then. I'm hoping things are just a little different. When I spoke to HR at MMMC they told me to fill out an application as they were accepting and to just try. I contacted all my friends who work at MMMC and they said to also try and apply as they're not on a freeze. The thing is, is that I applied as an LPN in March 2011 and haven't heard anything, I'm wondering if it will be different as an RN. I also will be bringing my dogs back home which will cost me over $2,000 and I kind of don't wanna risk spending that kind of money without a job. Basically, w/ an LPN and BSN RN degree, ACLS, EKG, and PALS certification, 7months experience in subacute setting as an LPN, and 2 years as an home health LPN, do I stand a chance???? Thanks! :)

Pregnant, Nursing School, and Full time LPN
Thank you all so much for your responses!!! and sorry I sound like a complete idiot...new nursing friends??? thats not so nice! . I believe I will wait for my Drs app to confirm my PT or anything else. Just to answer a few of the other ?s. If it is so, my mom will be watching my baby, since shes retired but refuses to stay home d/t boredom. Also, for the "what ifs" thats something that scares me and I often think about. My main concern has always been school for the most part as I'm almost done. If worst comes to worst and I have to quit my job then so be it, but school has always been a priority and I have to stay on track. There have been 6 pregnancies in the semester. 3 dropped out and 3 are still truckin along. Those still going at it have husbands in the army and didn't have to work, so that was nice for them. They all gave birth between this past May-July. Two of my friends had surgeries right after Spring break and missed 2weeks of school, thankfully the instructors allowed them to make it up during the summer. The biggest concern has always been missed clinicals and in my final semester we have our preceptorship, which is 11 days (12hrs), it begins in Jan and ends in March. So if anything, thats the biggest thing I might miss and I'm sure I can make that up in the summer if nothing crazy happens. 90% (1day missed) of clinical is required to pass. 80% (2days missed) missed and they'll work w/you. 75% (3days) you have to retake the entire semester again. Thanks again everyone! On a side note, I've been at my LTC job for a week and absolutely love it, it took me 4 tries to find a good place and this one is it! 3 12s aren't too bad except I wished they werent back to back. morphed: thankfully for the past 3yrs I've never had to cook or clean, I leave that to my husband. All I really do is nursing. I already feel like I don't have a life. Sat, Sunday are our hangout days for the past 3yrs and thats a sacrifice we both knew we had to make, although it sucks, thats why I have to finish ASAP! I have a wonderful husband who's been carrying my share of the load and never complains cause he knows this is only temporary. He's been great through it all. I've been on this crazy adventure for so long and I'm ready for it to end. I try to prevent burn out by doing my other hobbies on the weekends and staying as far as I can from home. School wk gets done right after school although I do procrastinate at times and work stays at work. Yes, I'm fearful that w/ a new baby everythings gonna do a 360 but I can't take anything back and if I am pregnant I definitely don't regret it. :)

ever worked for flu shot clinic???
Hi, I did flu shots as volunteer work for my RN program at the Veterans Hospital and I loved it! It was fun. People line up, ask em if they have allergies or previous reactions, glove up and draw the vaccine, and shoot away.... did that to over 100 veterans. It was such a great experience that I signed up for Occuvax and the Mollens Clinic this season. Don't know what to expect since I've never actually been employed at a flu clinic and was told I might be alone a couple of days and if people call in sick. I think I'll be fine as long as I have an epi pen if someone has an anaphylactic reaction. Thats the only thing I care about, but then again hopefully its not their first flu shot or have never ate eggs cause then they wouldn't know if they were allergic! yikes! You'll have fun!

LPN can't find a job because of school schedule
Hi guys, so I'm in the LPN-BSN program. With that I wanted to do LTC being that they're open 24hrs and would work w/any school schedule but unfortunately it didn't work out and I decided that maybe LTC isn't for me (another story). I've always been interested in working in a clinic and had two interviews. Everything was going great until I told them I was in the nursing program and handed them my school schedule for the year, then it all went down hill from there. They were like we need more flexibility and sometimes a student's schedule can be unpredictable. I guess they overlooked that part on my application and didn't realize I was in school before interviewing me. My question is, is it wise to present my school schedule w/them at the end of the interview or should I wait til offered a position. I just don't want to waste anyone's time and be an inconvenience to them, so I'm upfront in telling them what I can give them. There are a few clinics hiring part-time which would work out great but am I' doing too much by showing them my school schedule? Thanks!

quit LTC after 3 day orientation
Hi, I quit because I was so stressed out. For the 4days I was there, we were so understaffed that I was leaving two hours late w/out overtime. I was also asked to do self orientation on the computer w/out pay for 4hrs and just ask questions as needed. I just felt totally unsafe about the patient load and the fact that I could never find anyone for help, there was never anyone around. We also lost our 4th DON in 6months and I was told by the Unit manager that I came in at a bad time. I just felt what was required of me was so very impossible in the 8hrs I was there. I was also scheduled for 40hrs fulltime and they wanted me to work more to help out, I didn't even have time to rest and pull myself together. The 4th day I got sick from all the stress and puked after work. It was too much. I'm not sure if LTC is for me or if it was just the management. I don't wanna give up in LTC, I just wonder if there are better facilities that are willing to invest more than 2-3days of orientation.

quit LTC after 3 day orientation
So I quit my LTC job after 3 days orientation. I applied at this other LTC facility which I've heard great things about. The thing is, is that when I filled out the application, I realized that both my past job and this new job is under the same parent company. Will they know that I quit my other job after my 3 day orientation? I chose not to disclose it because it was only 3 days, but then again I'm not for sure.
