  1. I will be in the Fall 2020 PMHNP cohort 13. I was accepted last year and deferred it to this year, so that's the only reason I know that I was accepted.
  2. No offense, but the only people saying that around these parts are shady TV bail bondsmen. That completely disregards my original question. Has anyone actually USED their liability insurance? So far, I hear crickets....so I put as much weight on it being a useful product as I believe in Big Foot existing.
  3. Plenty of threads...not a single one seems to talk about actually USING the insurance when needed.
  4. NSO, Proliability. Great prices obviously because they're rarely (if ever) used. Curious if anyone on here has any actual experience where they've had to use the malpractice insurance? What was the experience like?
  5. I have a side job working for a someone (lets call them John) that owns their own company that basically provides a roster of nurses to an ambulance company and they run "Critical Care Transports" with a contract for a large hospital organization, where they pick up sick patients from clinics and bring them to specific hospital ERs or inpatient rooms (repatriation). The ambulance company provides the ambulance, EMTs, iPad for charting. John (the business owner of the nursing company) provides the supplies/medications and the calls/runs for a group of about 30 nurses. As a nurse, I basically give John my schedule and then go to the ambulance station, check out my supplies, and then get calls from their dispatch to meet an ambulance crew somewhere where they pick me up and then we go to a clinic or hospital to pick up a patient and bring them to another hospital. All the jobs are for a large hospital organization, which John (the nurse business owner) has the contract with. I keep track of all the calls I do and at the end of the month I send John a list of calls, and John pays me as a 1099 employee. John mentioned that we needed to file our business certificate required by the city (San Diego). Some of the nurses are incorporated or have an LLC. I'm curious if this is required/needed? I hold malpractice insurance. I report my income and pay taxes to the IRS. Do I need to incorporate as well for any reason?
  6. The security tackled the guy to the ground a couple of seconds after the police were walking by saying they couldn't do anything.
  7. I was working in the ER psych unit with an older psychotic patient. A couple of uniformed PD came to pick up a patient in another room to bring him to jail after he was medically cleared. As they started walking out with the patient, I was about 2 feet from my patient (I was outside of the doorway to his room, and the patient was standing in the doorway). My patient sees the police and grabs me in a bear hug yelling "I don't want to go!" I was able to pry free of him as our hospital security tackled him to the ground. The PD had walked by escorting their patient as this was going on. Later on one of the nurses said to me that she was yelling for the PD to do something to which they replied "sorry, we can't do anything". Does this sound correct? Should the police intervened in this situation? It took me a couple of seconds to get out of the bear hug, and the security eventually tackled my patient to the ground. I wasn't harmed (I'm a somewhat athletic guy). I imagine if it was one of the more petite female nurses, they would have gotten hurt. Do you think I should do anything? File a complaint, or let it go? Does it sound like the police were following protocol by not stepping in?
  8. "Are you ok Annie...you've been touched by...a smooth criminal!"
  9. It's $300 to renew the PHN, price went up this year.
  10. Is there a penalty for not renewing it and letting it lapse?
  11. I am in the process of renewing my RN license for this 2 year cycle. As of last year, it looks like the PHN Certificate application is now $300. I currently hold this certificate as I was granted it when I initially obtained my RN license. If I choose to let the PHN lapse (due to cost), can I come back later and readd it by just paying the fee? Or will I need to reapply, get transcripts, etc.? Thanks.
  12. Is it ok to touch a pt to check responsiveness? If a patient with a triage note stating ems found them unresponsive was lying supine in a bed with a towel over the head and not responding to being called, is it ok to touch them (tap their foot) to check responsiveness? Sounds weird, i know, but there was a patient threatening to call police for assault for doing just that.
  13. Been an ER RN for 5 years, thinking of going back and getting my PMHNP. Live in So Cal. Pretty much have admittance to a program because they are telling me it's often hard to fill their cohort because not many people want to go that NP route. I've seen the payscale data etc that shows how much NPs make. I've also heard anecdotes on how much PMHNPs can earn. I don't really trust the salary numbers that are reported in the media, because as an RN in So Cal, I make way more than what is commonly reported. I'm curious if anyone has information on what realistic expected wages are in the So Cal area for this specialty?
  14. I am a BSN graduate and was thinking of becoming a psych NP. The school I went to for my BSN (Cal State San Marcos) offers two different programs for MSN...Advance Practice Nursing and Post Masters Certification. The hospital I work for (Kaiser) pays 100% for MSN degrees from Capella or Colorado Technical University however the specialty would be Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, Care Coordination, or Nursing Informatics. I'm curious if it may be beneficial for me to do the MSN through Capella or CTU and have it paid for 100% then do the post masters certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Cal State San Marcos? Or should I just do the Advance Practice Nursing route with a concentration on PMHNP from the start? Obviously the cost would be about 2x as much going that route and it wouldn't be paid for by my employer. Curious if there are pros/cons to getting the post masters certificate after getting a non NP MSN?
  15. I have a BSN with 5 years of nursing experience after getting my BSN. I was just offered Level I, grade 3 step 8 at approx . 95k in San Diego ER. This is a per diem/part time spot. I'm curious why I wasn't given Level II?
  16. I am an RN working full time in the ER. I want to go back to school in San Diego, CA to get my psych NP (PMHNP) part time. I think I earn too much money for financial aid? I was curious if there are any programs like scholarships, loans, etc. that I can apply for that will help me to pay for graduate school? I plan on working part time in order to pay for living expenses and to keep my "in" at the hospital. I'm not looking for a free-ride, but maybe a loan that I can repay or a grant? Considering I want to get into a highly underserved specialty, I would think there'd be something out there to help. Thanks.
  17. As a CCT nurse, I am reimbursed from the company per trip. I am an independent contractor and was told I need to provide an invoice with the name of the patient, where they were picked up, where they were transported to, date, time of run and unit number. I have been taking pictures of the face sheets in order to put together my list to submit for billing purposes. Is this OK? I don't think it violates any HIPAA because I am strictly using it for work related/billing purposes. These photos/copies of face sheets will be destroyed/shredded once I have submitted the invoice and have been paid. Am I right?
  18. I am currently a working ER RN (4.5 years), thinking of going back to get into NP/Psych because I like psych but also because people I know have gotten multiple job offers as psych NPs before even graduating. I also live in So Cal. Which route would be better - PMHNP or FNP with an and add on specialty cert to become PMHNP? My friends say getting the FNP first would be wise because as well as psych, you'd have the ability to manage the patients medically if necessary as well as having more clout as an FNP with a post master's cert in PMHNP. Thoughts?
  19. 5 years from the original post and CCT RNs are still here in So Cal!
  20. Another reason I'm wondering is if it took me a while to find a CRNA job, it would be nice to work as an RN to earn income!
  21. I'm curious if, as a CRNA, you are still allowed to pick up bedside shifts as an RN? I know, you might say, why would you want to do that, you make more as a CRNA. But to have variety in work and keep up bedside skills (NGs, foleys, person-to-person interaction, etc.) I think it would be nice if I was able to become a CRNA and then pick up a shift here and there in the ER or ICU. As a CRNA, are you restricted from performing the role of a bedside RN? Thoughts?
  22. I can't imagine the ICU NTI one being more fun than the ENA conference. For one, it looks like you can do some pretty cool classes (ultrasound iv, codes, disasters, first responder stuff, etc.) in the ENA one. I doubt they'd have that fun stuff in the ICU one. Second, I'd much rather be at a conference with a bunch of wild, crazy, balls to the wall ER nurses than type A, methodical, OCD ICU nurses!!!
  23. I am an ER RN so I know about the ENA conference and the NTI ACCN conference. Curious what other large conferences for nurses are out there? Also curious what the attendance is of these big conferences? Is the ENA conference the largest attended one? Or NTi?
  24. Follow up to this post - I've been working as a staff ER Nurse for the past 2 years. No problem getting my license!
  25. I was curious how the Abboject syringes for the code meds (epi, atropine, etc) are put together? Does the medication vial screw in to the syringe vial? Does it stick out the end of the syringe? How does one push the med, is there a plunger that is somewhere in the box? I tried Googling and Youtubeing videos, but surprisingly there aren't any. I figure this would be a pretty important thing to know how to do before I push meds in my first code. Thanks.
