  1. They are usually manipulative in the way where they will try and tell you what to do and and in a hospital setting try and tell you they are allowed to do certain things even if they are not. It is never wise to take their word on things and to talk to the nurse in charge or a nurse who knows their care plan. They may also claim to be very sick even when they are not to try and get you to feel sorry for them or other tactics to try and get you to feel sorry for them. In many cases they will act like the nicest person to you but will turn on you as soon as you do not do what they want. Once that happens they can me quite mean. You just have to not take anything personally.
  2. Hi, thanks for the reply! I am in Canada, so here you don't have to be a regular nurse, you just go to get your bachelor of science in psychiatric nursing, which is a four year degree. I still believe it will be competitive but the reason I believe it will be less competative is that it is still a really up and comming profression in my city. The program has not been around for too long, and regular nursing is by far the more common of the two for people to apply to get into.
  3. Hey everyone, I am currently in the process of applying to a psychiatric nursing program and am wondering what GPA you roughly need to get in. I know it says the minimum to apply for the school I am applying to is 2.0, but i, sure that it is more competitive than that. The regular nursing programs in my area dont accept people with less than a 3.8 which is worrying me. I cant see psychiatric nursing being quite that cometitive, but I was wondering how the two compared in terms of GPA. Thanks!
  4. Hello, I was just wondering what GPA some of you have gotten into your nursing program with. I am interested in attending the psychiatric nursing program in my area, and although it list the minimum GPA you need to apply (2.5), I know thats not the GPA that would be competative enough to ensure my chances of being accepted. I was just wondering if someone could give me a better idea of what the average GPA's are around for people who do get accepted?
  5. Im not sure where you are from but in my area there is a psychiatric nursing program offered that is separate from the regular nursing program. In this case you only learn things in the field of psyciatric nursing, as well as when you are doing your practicums. There is basic nursing skills you will need to know how to do such as vital signs, CPR, drawing blood, catheterizations and ennemas ( I know gross!) since these things may be applicable when dealing with some psych patients.
  6. Hey, I am interested in becoming a psyh nurse and would like to eventualy experience a number of different wards/fields of psychology upon graduation. What I was wondering though is about the forensic ward. A am a young female and am not very big or strong. Would I still be able to work in a forensic ward where there are violent patients who may need to be constrained at times? Also what is it like to work with this type of patient? Do any of you have experience of working with dangerous patients as a female? Thanks!
