I graduated from an online FNP program. How did you know you we're ready to test?

I work for the BOP. It is not bad at all. I never in a million years thought I would be working in a prison but I like it and the USPHS is a great opportunity (if I can ever get in!!!). Now if for some reason PHS doesn't work out, I will be going back to hospital work.

This process is extremely long...please tell me it is worth it. According to my CAM or recruiter I have done everything I can do. They are waiting for the HR department at my job to convert the position. I asked my boss about it and he said that HR messed up the paperwork some how and the PHS people are calling him asking him what is taking so long. FRUSTRATION with a capital F!

I guess that it is one of the benefits of being PHS instead of other military branches. They do not put you in a position. You have to find your own position. This allows you to choose where you go. For example, I was in the Air Force. When I was commissioned they told me, I was going to California. It didn't matter that my first choice was somewhere else. I went to California. This process was much easier but I didn't really have much control. However, it can be a pain in the butt to find your own position (especially if you don't want to move or if you are picky about where you work). If you are willing to move, there are lots of positions available. If you are willing to work in a prison or immigration detention center or for Indian Health there are plenty of openings for nurses.

Yes....the pause has finally been lifted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I spoke with my CAM and the only thing left is the 1662. It is generated by the agency for which I am working. According to my supervisor, that process was started today. Not much longer!!!!! Thank goodness because it has been about 9 months and counting since I started this whole process. I am so excited.

Snail Mail. I was also accepted to Indiana State but it looks like USA considerably cheaper (unless I am reading the tuition rates incorrectly) plus ISU is 48 credit hours USA is 45. I also applied to UAB but haven't heard from them yet. I will most likely select USA. ISU just informed me that even though I am accepted for Spring 2011, I can't start clinicals until Spring 2013!!!!!UGH!!! I want to go full time and was hoping to be finishing by Spring 2013!!!

I also applied to UAB. I haven't heard from them yet. I did get into USA. I just found out.

I just found out that I was accepted for Spring 2011.

kinda...the process has 2 separate parts. 1). you apply to the corps. This takes a while... 2). you find a job at agency (BOP, DIHS, IHS etc). I personally started the process in early May...I have a job at a phs agency (I accepted it as a civillian). Recently, I participated in a conference call that discussed the next steps in obtaining my commission in the public health corps. I am being told by my employer that once my package (medical clearance, security clearance, professional board) has been reviewed, it will be simple to convert over to a public health corps officer. well I got an email from them today and they no longer offer in state tuition for their out of state online students.

I know what you mean. A friend from work attends UAB and she says it is great. I applied to ISU, UAB and USA for Spring 2011. Some people say that is crazy but I just really want to get started in January. Did you apply anywhere else?

thanks for the heads up...The application deadline was Sept 24th so I imagine that it will be a while before I hear something.

Hello. I have applied to Indiana State University, University of South Alabama, and University of Alabama Birmingham's FNP programs for Spring 2011. So far I have been accepted to ISU. If USA or UAB accepts my application as well, I will have to choose which one to attend. Any advice? Are they that different from each other? I have looked at the programs online and read countless threads on this website about all three programs. USA has more reviews on allnurses.com that ISU and UAB combined. So if you have attended one of these programs, I would love to know your thoughts on your program both good and bad. Who knows, I may only be accepted to ISU. That would make the decision pretty easy!!!

I am accepted to ISU for Spring 2011. I am excited but nervous. Any advice or comments about the program at Indiana State would be helpful.

ditto...I too am a labor and delivery nurse and truly love women's health. However, I am going to get my FNP because I can still work in women's health with a FNP. With a WHNP I would only be able to do women's health. I can't imagine not ever working in women's health but who knows...maybe one day I will wake up and just be sick of vag exams...the FNP will give me the ability to change specialties.

I have also applied to USA's FNP program for Spring 2011. I applied to 3 different schools. Indiana State South Alabama UAB So far I have only heard back form Indiana State. I was accepted. The difficult part will be deciding on which school to attend if either of the other 2 accept me. Any advice out there?

I have also been accepted to the FNP program for Spring 2011. Does anyone know how if they charge out of state tuition for their online program? I live in Texas. I had heard that they charge in state tuition for their online programs. I am so excited to be accepted. Does anyone out there have any helpful hints to be sucessful in this program? hello. I am just starting this process. Sounds like is kinda a lenghty one. have a couple of questions though. how do they determine your starting rank? I am a BSN nurse with 6 years nursing experience (3 in the Air Force). I am assuming that I would come in as an 0-3. I was probably going to apply to BOP (bastrop tx) or DIHS (pearsall or Taylor). Any info on these assignments? Also I am still in the inactive reserve for the Air Force...Will that be a problem? Any input would be helpful.
