Kennesaw State University Nursing 2012
Oh gosh! QTqueen, I hope they don't get mad at you for using a full name and email. They watch the threads and apparently posting someone's name is not allowed, nor is posting any identifiable information like initials. Do you know if you are able to modify your post?

Kennesaw State University Nursing 2012
Hey bjc3, not sure, because they are not supposed to look at other stuff besides the 5 areas (3 GPA's, TEAS, and interview). Your GPA is pretty low. I never heard of anyone getting in with a GPA lower than 3.0. I am not sure if they will calculate your grad school GPA either. There is no way they will know about your other qualities until the interview, which is the last thing they do, so if you don't make the cut with your GPA's and teas score then you will never have the opportunity to make in to an interview and tell them. However, with that being said, you are competing against the people you applied with. I got in for Jan, and it was my 4th time applying. My guess is that the stats were lower this go round ;-)

Kennesaw State Fall 2011
Thanks QTQueen, can you give me a little more infomaiton about how the class is structured? I was under the impression that there was one major research assignment that need to be done the whole semester (I don't remember where I heard that from). What type of assignments do you have to do?

KSU accelerated RN program Spring 2012
@Fanger33, I heard that research is going to take up a lot of time regardless because it is ongoing. This class....I heard makes that first semester of the accelerated program hell :). I just wanted to know specifically if information is given in the class on campus that would be beneficial. For example, on campus, do they explain research methods, APA style, etc.? Or, are you kind of left to learn by yourself, or already be familiar with doing research if you take it online? My thought process is that I can spend time during the day researching instead of sticking around campus until 8pm to take the class on campus. I don't know what to do...

KSU accelerated RN program Spring 2012
@Proms...that's the same thing I said. I hate 8am classes, my brain doesn't kick in until around 10...lol! But, I would rather have class early and have time to study during the day, otherwise, if I take my first class in the late morning/afternoon, I'll waste my morning hours. I'll just make sure I stop by starbucks on the way to campus to get my white chocolate mocha. I have to get my sleep schedule together, I am such a night owl, I stay up until like 2am regularly.

KSU accelerated RN program Spring 2012
Hey everyone, it's been a while. Just wanted to let you know that the schedule is out for Spring 2012 (Owl Express). From what it seems, if I can get in the sections I want, I'll only be in class M-W, that leaves Th & F to study ALL day, and for clinicals when we start. Also, M & W, I'll have free after 12pm to study. This makes me feel a little less overwhelmed. I'm thinking about taking research online because it is only offered on campus in the evening (5-7:45 or 6-8:45). I want to be home by then. Does anyone know anyone to ask if it makes a difference whether you take it online or on campus?

Questions on the TEAS Test V && Whether or not I even have a shot in Nursing....
@January03, are you able to get a masters in nursing without a BSN?
-
Kennesaw State Fall 2011
Thanks QTQueen. Also, I wanted to know if there is any difference between taking NURS 4402 (Research) online vs. on campus. Is taking it on campus more beneficial? I have done research papers before for my first degree and am very familiar with APA formating. If anyone could answer, that would be great!

@Proms, I heard that Saunders is a very good book. However, it depends on your ability to grasp info and how you learn. I actually looked at Saunders, and I liked it because it was divided into each section/type or nursing ie: med/surg, pediatrics, etc. I also looked at Kaplan, but preferred Saunders more. I also looked at NCLEX made Incredibly Easy too. I liked that one, because it was more visually stimulating. I'm more of a visual learner. I will definitely be using Saunders because to me it is the most organized, and the rationals made sense to me without me even knowing much about the different fundamentals of nursing. With that being said, try to go to barnes and noble and look through the books, to see which one is organized to your liking. Anyway, if we all make it to the end, I'm sure that we will be studying as a group using several copies of review books. I am sooooo excited, and can't wait to start meeting up with you all. Has everyone received your calculate with confidence books. I'm basically finished, and it is all pretty easy. If you all remember the problems from Chem 1152 (finding how many moles/grams/mL) you will be fine. Also, I asked a 1st semester student about the calculation test and she said the questions are straight forward, no extra info to trick us. Order: ##mg of Drug A. Available: Drug A ##mg/mL. How many mL's should the pt. get? Very easy.

Hey everyone, if you have your CPR certification it will be okay as long as YOU DO NOT LET IT EXPIRE DURING THE SEMESTER!!!! I have friends in the program who got their certification because of work and they have been fine. You just have to stay on top of everything. Because nursing school can be so overwhelming for some students, they forget to keep their certification and immunizations up to date. I am going to get CPR certified, and my immunizations are up to date for the next few years. The only thing I will need to do is have my Dr. complete my physical forms and if they want a new physial to be done, I'll do that also. The physicals have to be renewed annually. The CPR certification lasts for 2 years. The only situation that I've heard of with the CPR cert. not being accepted is if there have been updates to procedures. for example, if you were certified January 2011, but AHA changed the requirements July 2011, then you would need to recertify. So with that being said, Proms you should be fine as long as there haven't been any updates to the procedures or the CPR instrux you received previously. And if your certification expires in October, then make sure you renew it well before then, like August or September. As for the badges, books, and uniforms (a link to the store is on the WSON website), I will definitely hold off on that!! Yes it is true that they can change the design of the badges, the books may change for each class at the beginning of the semester, and the uniform styles and requirements may change. The criminal background and drug test should not be done until AFTER we start classes because it needs to be done once you START the program, not before.

Hopefully it works out for you Islandrae!

Makes no sense to renew it now you have almost a year of certification left. Just make sure it is from the American Heart Association and make sure it doesn't expire. I've heard that they've pulled students out of clinicals because they forgot to renew their certification and/or submit their physical annually.

Yeah...I heard that "they" are cracking down on those wonderful patho notes that students distributed amongst themselves....LOL! I'm not sure if they are allowing us to get them anymore, but I know for sure that if we do get them, we don't need the text book. I was probably going to look for a study guide (on amazon or something) for that class. Patho is the hardest class the first semester...so I hear.

Thank you for your response. We actually have a couple Spring 2012 threads going. LOL!! I got in for the accelerated program also. How much time do you dedicate per day to studying. Do you work at all? I have pretty much been preparing myself mentally to realize that I will basically be living on campus Monday through Friday. Is that a fair assessment?

@ Fanger- I got mine from amazon.com. I got the 4th edition brand new with the CD, it was still shrink wrapped. The information is the same as the 5th edition. The 5th edition has updated general info like (how meds are tracked, systems used, etc.) We are going to learn that stuff anyway when we take pharmacology, so I didn't think it mattered. The total with shipping was like $20. Explanations are the same in both editions.

The book is EXCELLENT!!!!!! It has a ton of problems and it also comes with a CD that has problems also. It has a review section that covers converting between different masses, volumes, etc. and it covers the basics of rounding, adding decimals, multiplying fractions, etc. Each chapter feeds off of the previous chapter so it is easier to follow along. Each chapter has practice problems and a review test. I've had no problems grasping the information and I am more than half way through the book. I don't think the professor will give you practice problems, but like I said the book and CD have PLEEEENNNNNTTTTYYY!!! Honestly, it would probably be better to meet after everyone has gone through the review section because it can be very redundant for some. When it gets to calculating doses of medication, that's where the fun is:)....and a whiteboard would help if we decide to study as a group. There are study areas on the second and third floors near the elevators in the nursing building. They have some study rooms available, but I am not sure how you request those. I agree KSU's library sucks! However, they also have group study rooms that you can reserve. You need to have your KSU ID card and request a room at the front desk. Hope this helps.

@skyebrook- crossing my fingers...good luck! @mom2ees- yes summer is eight weeks...lol! i'm dreading that also!!!! @proms2009- i saw on another thread that you had questions about immunizations and books. here is a link for the clinical requirements (immunizations, cpr, drug & background check) http://www.kennesaw.edu/chhs/son/current/clinical.html do not get the drug test done until the first week of class! it has to be done once you start the program!!!! as far as books, you will be able to see the list once you register for class on owl express. the teachers have to submit the book request information to the bookstore which is usually around the time of registration. i would hold off on that because you don't know if they will be changing editions or texts as a whole. a current student told me to start working on drug calculations (calculate with confidence) because we will be tested and have to pass with 90%, and study pathophysiology. i've been working on drug calculations and it seems pretty straight to the point to me. i'm also really good with math, so that's helps. i'm almost 3/4 through the book.

I would rather wait until they set up the FB page, especially with the new FB update (where everyone is all in your business...LOL). I think we should continue to post on here at least until orientation. However, if you do create a FB page, can you still post info on here? @Skybrooke did you get in?

KSU accelerated RN program Spring 2012
Wow....a friend of mine just texted me that she is on the waitlist. That sucks!!!!
-
KSU accelerated RN program Spring 2012
@Fanger....unfortunately you can't technically take someone's spot in the accelerated program because both programs have a waitlist, so they would get first dibs. However, I have heard that if you were in the accelerated program and something came up where you had to take less classes per semester, that was possible. I've never heard of someone moving up from traditional to accelerated. I know someone that is only taking one nursing class per semester because of a personal situation.

I think the SNA sets that up, and whoever if the Lead for our class will be an administrator on the group.
