  1. A few weeks ago, I was discharging a patient from the ER. The MD wrote a prescription for benadryl. I gave the script to the patient and also said you can buy this over the counter if you want to. (it was 1 am in the morning-thought it would be easier just to buy it OTC than to wait for a pharmacy...) Anyway, the patient smirked and said "well it's free for me" and starting laughing. And she waas being serious! I was so mad I just walked out the door.

We actually have someone asked for a tylenol prescription...Never in my life have I been so amazed. It would cost them maybe $3. But of course, they just want to ride the system.
  3. Anyone have any luck with bentyl and / or robinul? Just started both of these yesterday. Also having to take 3 others medication for interstitial cystis....wonderful....
  4. I refuse to let my patients go out and smoke. If they sneak out, then I sign them out AMA and they have to go through the whole process again. I feel if they think they are sick enough to be in the ER then they don't need to smoke. I tell them up front about this. MD's back me up too

thanks...i am going to see another doctor about all of this...i want someone who will listen to me and not blow me off...they just keep giving me pain meds but i don't like taking them (can't function very well with them) i want an answer, etc not pain meds.....ya know? the pyridium seems to help with the bladder spasms at least.....
  6. AND FINALLY... If I had a nickel every time a nonemerency patient took the ambulance into the ER while the sickest -ready to code pt- drove themselves in--I wouldn't be working ever again!
  7. When in triage, "How much longer...I was here before them and they got to go back before me" When pt's are in the ER for abd pain n/v/d yet they eat and drink from the vending machines while they wait in the lobby. Letting kids run, crawl, etc all over the ER without anything on but a diaper-then parents state "i just don't know why they are sick" Any type of pain, etc lasting more than a few weeks...could you not have gone to the doctor? Also, tooth pain--"I broke my tooth this morning but didn't want to bother the dentist" So now they are in the ER on a Friday night for this tooth (that wasn't even broken) When a code is going on, pt asking "how much longer" and trying to watch the code when you have told them to stay in their room a hundred times Parents who bring their children into the ER in the middle of the night for stupid reasons-I'm sure the kid always actually get sick from the germs in the ER After the pt has been in the room for 2 seconds and they want to know when they will be admitted

Every once in a while I have terrible flank pain and trouble with urination (retention-where i have ended up with a F/C for several days) . I have seen 2 MDs regarding this and they have basically blew me off. They did an IVP and CT scans but since they don't see anything they don't believe me. I am so sick of this...Any suggestions?
