Purdue RN to BSN
Hi! I'm getting ready to register for Purdue's RN to BSN online program. I'm still unclear on what the clinical component ACTUALLY looks like. My advisor said it's basically a care plan project. Are you actually needing to be hands on with a patient? Or just using medical records? Can anyone give me more details on this? And any other experiences with the program... Thanks!

Anyone do the Kaplan online NP program?
Congratulations!! I agree, as long as the school is accredited I think thats all that matters. Can I ask what the program looked like for you as far as time? did you work full time, how did the rest schedule out? So happy for you!

Anyone do the Kaplan online NP program?
I am looking at programs now. My company offers a discount with Kaplan so it looks enticing. I know there are a lot of people who say stay away but I am hoping to hear from some who have actually done the online NP program through Kaplan. What did you think? What was the format like? Do they set you up with preceptors for clinicals? Are you in Texas? Thanks!!

Anyone working as an independent health coach?
Hello! Curious about the independent coaching. What are the guidlines about protecting client privacy and HIPAA if you are acting as an independent nurse coach and not dealing with insurance. Do you have to physically encrypt client info on your computer any special way?? Thanks! Also would love yo hear from some nurses working in this field and your experience in it.

Scope of Practice Question - Texas specific
Got it, I need to see where over the counter meds fall into that. If all else fails I assume you could tell the "client" call your doctor and ask if you can take "This"...

Scope of Practice Question - Texas specific
I was an lvn before I was an RN so I'm guessing that's where I got that from. Also everywhere I've worked I've worked for doctors or at least had a medical director. So that's WHAT.

Scope of Practice Question - Texas specific
So a nurse can just work as a totally independent nurse, directly with a patient population?

Scope of Practice Question - Texas specific
I have a question for anyone that is operating as a Nurse Coach or Health Coach, or anyone that can answer for sure. I have been thinking about doing freelance health coaching for clients, not contracting with a company but on my own. I have always been under the impression that an RN could not operate and call herself an RN outside of the direct supervision of a Physician. However, while looking at the Texas BON website and Nurse Practice Act I come across this Position Statement #15.28 "The registered nurse Scope of practice"... It states: "The RN takes responsibility and accepts accountability for practicing within the legal scope of practice and is prepared to work in all health care settings, and may engage in independent nursing practice without supervision by another health care provider." My question is regarding that last statement "... and may engage in independent nursing practice without supervision by another health care provider." Does this mean like in a practice while a doctor is not physically there or does this mean, on your own without reporting to anyone? I looked on the BON website and can't find anything else. Anyone know who to ask about this type of thing? Anyone working as a freelance health coach directly to "clients"? I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

Do you miss face to face?
Thank you prettyinblack! I start on the 12th. My current boss cornered me today asking why I was leaving and actually asked "is it about the money?" Lol no doc it's less stress and yes a huge raise, probably just peanuts to him though. I want to work with adults who care about what they are doing and are actually capable and willing to do their jobs. I love talking to patients and helping them work through things. I'm hoping this will be a good fit. â¤

Answering the "where are you going" ??
I'm leaving my current job soon. And soon people are going to start asking where I'm going. There are some people I just don't want to give this information to, mostly because of gossip. Then there are others I don't mind knowing. However I know I have to tell everyone the same thing and the "none of your business" answer is hard for me and makes me feel like a jerk. These people are going to want details. Any advice? Or am I just going to have to suck it up and be a jerk? Thx

Took my nclex pn stopped at 85
if you feel like you did pretty good odds are you did. The test stops once you reach either enough right answers to be deemed competent or so many wrong answers there's no recovery. So as long as you feel good (especially about the last question you answered) you should be fine. Ps My results were up in just a couple of days online.

New Job - Confidence Low
I have been in oncology 3 years. At first I was so scared I was going to make a mistake. The first thing I did was make a list of all the IV drugs we used and labeled how fast they were run. I also memorized a drip rate formula because we do not usually use pumps. Then as I got comfortable with run times, I made note of the order drugs HAD to be given. For example we always do carbo after Taxol. ect. Now those things are in my head. Next I tried to memorize drug specific side effects, like camptosar and diarrhea, oxaliplatin and cold sensitivity. This way when someone had a weird reaction I could quickly find the culprit. Now (even though I often feel like i dont know enough or lack a little confidence here and there) I am much more comfortable and able to quickly grab this info from my brain. LONG STORY SHORT: *take your time* (every mistake I've made was because I felt like i had to rush), do everything with purpose (check your names/DOBS/Drug orders), make lists and refer to them when you need to and know that mistakes may happen but you have to learn from them. And above all be honest when you screw up. the quicker a mistake is fixed the better the outcome will be. I hate to see someone try and cover up a mistake so they arent blamed. (that was just venting, sorry ) And know that it will all come to you eventually! I'd say it took most of us about 6 months? Good luck!

OCN vs. Cancer Basics Vs. Bio/chemo cert
Hello! I am an oncology nurse looking to get my OCN soon. Should bother going through the "Cancer basics" course or Chemo/bio therapy certs? Would either help me prepare for the OCN or are they both included in the OCN? I hate to waste the money on them if I should just jump right into the OCN certification. I have been in oncology 3 years. Thanks!
