LPN salary in New Orleans/Northshore area
I worked nights at a hospital when I first graduated and was averaging 21/shift with night/weekend diff. you do get paid ALOT lower as a staff LPN than an RN in a hospital if you are a new grad or have less than 3 yrs experience. You do get diff, but that also is a little lower than the RN diff. My brother is an RN working nights in a hospital and the pay is higher. If you decide to work in a LTAC then you can make more an hour. My friend works as a prn LPN at tulanes clinic and makes 18.50/hour. As a FT staff LPN there you only make 16.50/hr. Only thing is she said you lose lots of skills bc she mainly does paperwork and occasionally gives injections. Long story short, I choose to work at the hospital first with the low base pay they offered as a new grad to earn my year experience (which I am so grateful for) however I worked nights to make the extra pay. I am now completing my RN with excelsior to further my career as a nurse and make more money earned while working hard in the profession I admire.

Health Differences Across Lifespan 1
I just went directly to their site http://www.studygroup101.com and paid using paypal 9.99 to download the material then print it from home. def check it out. remember to read up on all material in the EC guide. I also like to take the EC practice tests online, they really give you a good idea of what to expect on the actual test. Dont get discouraged and keep postponing the exam bc you only get 6 months, plus it will only take you even longer to finish. Stay motivated and read as often as you can. It usually takes me 2 weeks to study and test. But when I say 2 weeks, I am reading everyday. You can do this!!! I also like to read others success stories with Excelsior on this site to keep the motivation going. I get excited when others who took this route finish. Good luck and remember to keep reading and schedule that test!!

Private duty nursing???
Thanks for the info, it did give a clearer picture. I applied to carelink home care services. They did list peds as their main focus, however they did say they see patients of all ages. I have an interview this week and will let you know what is said. I'm curious to see how it goes. I also applied to a few staffing agencies and maxim called back with a prn lpn position. I fax my documents to them on Monday to begin the interview process.

I also use the EC content guide and read the chapters to look up all information listed. I do use the notes from studygroup101 as an extra guide and I like the amount of info and practice tests they provide for 9.99. Good luck, I am too studying this exam.

Private duty nursing???
So I have an interview this week for a home health LPN position. The description that I was emailed included private duty LPN providing direct care to a patient in their home 6-12 hours/shift/day depending on case. My experience has been in a hospital settimg and since I had a baby 10 weeks ago, I wanted something more flexible like home health. So my question is, what exactly is private duty nursing? I'm assuming I would be providing care to one patient/day for the hours listed above. Can someone list some experiences and examples of what care is provided to one patient in a 6-12 hour day like. I was more interested in seeing a variety of patients throughout the day in more short visits as in home health nursing. Thanks in advance :)

Opinions on weekend only night shift position
I worked nights on a internal medicine/telemetry unit full time and i have to say I loved it. I also have a family which consists of 12 y/o twins, a 4 y/o toddler, and a 10 wk newborn. Now while I was working, I was preggo and did get tired and have to leave at 8 months. Before that though, I have always been a night owl, so I knew I would work nights. I like the fact that during the night shift there is not much chaos from all the medical team and patient family running around the floor. I did sleep most the day when I got off, which does take away from family time, but when I was off I was enjoying those nice long days of spending time with my loved ones. My friend worked day shifts and still found it the same that she didn't have lots of time to share when working due to having too hit the bed as soon as you get home and waking up extremely early to head out. I also love the pay you make working nights. So I would take the night position especially being able to have the whole week off. JMO

LPN pay rates
I also did an interview with ochsner and was hired. The pay rate is that at the hospital but if you work nights the diff is added and brings that base pay up. So I chose to do 12 hr nights. I'm excited to be able to work on a hospital unit and begin my nursing journey. Will keep posted to how it goes. My friend though makes 18/ hr at a doctors office very lucky but she also friends of the family:o

Please Help
Hello! I decided to join after a long two years passing and just reading all the posts and treads on the site. I graduated in December and took the nclex pn today. i reviewed the kaplan 2010 and Saunders 4th ed, and nursing made easy by sylvia rayfield......and WOW boards was nothing like the books. i felt extremely anxious and felt like i was going to cry or vomit in the end. my test shut off at 91 questions with A LOT of drug questions. after reading some posts on here last night about the Pearson trick, i came home a few hours later and tried it. the pop up came on and did not let me re register so i feel a lot better that i prob did pass. all i can say to you is to review your labs, abnormal findings, infection control, which patient to see first, and def the drug side effects of lots of drugs for any and all diseases/conditions. again, the test is nothing like you"ve seen before and most ppl say they walked out feeling like they failed but later found out they had passed. i also didn't do too well on the practice test in the books. i do however like the ATI study books. i wish i would of concentrated more in those. i found a lot of answers in there once i got home from boards. GOOD LUCK! I'll post my results when they come in. i live in new Orleans and most say they received theirs in the mail in 3 days.
