Staff roster/management
Does anyone have a template or program they use for staff or roster management? Looking for something that can handle basic staff information, demographics, hire date, FTE etc., but also would be nice to be able to track competencies, education, certifications...things like that. I have a home-grown version, but would love to know if there is something out there others have built or use.

Daily Staff Management
Looking to see what other managers out there use for daily staff management. Thinking of float dates, voluntary time off, mandated time off, as well as see what competencies the staff working have. In my time I have seen everything from paper in a binder, to my current unit uses a Microsoft access database. I have tried looking to see if there was some type of software out there for this and could not find anything.

Assistant Nurse Manager Duties
Is anyone willing to give insight on how they delineate duties between the Nurse Manager (NM) and the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM). I am a relatively new NM and I am looking to provide more structure to our leadership team. I have teased out pretty well what the roles/duties of the CNS and Nurse Educator are/will be, but am having a harder time with myself and the ANM. My first thoughts are to have the ANM function as a clinical nurse manager and have oversight of all clinical aspects of the department(s) (clinical performance, quality metrics etc.) with myself handling administrative duties (budget, scheduling, time and attendance etc.). Obviously I would still be ultimately responsible for all aspects of the units but thought this would help us to have clearly defined roles day to day. I would also still assist/jump in as needed and provide leadership and coaching/mentoring to her. Thoughts?

Nurse Management
Hello, I have several, 6 to be exact, second round interviews for an ICU Nurse Manager position coming up over the next couple of weeks. I am not really nervous about any of them as I know most of the people that I will be interviewing with. My question is I need ideas on what types of questions to ask them in the interviews. Below is a list of the different groups I will be interviewing with. Current ICU Assistant Nurse Managers Staff Other inpatient Nurse Managers Nursing Directors Critical Care Administrator and Associate CNO ICU Medical Director Again, I am looking for suggestions on what types of questions to ask. This would be my first Nurse Manager position. My last 2 positions have been in Assistant Nurse Manager and Clinical Nurse Leader roles. Thanks in advance for any help.

Army Question
Hey all, This isn't specifically an Army nursing question, but I wasn't sure where else to go with it and am hoping someone here can help me out. I am a RN with a background in Peds critical care, critical care management, and currently operations administration, specifically bed placement. I am currently enrolled in an MHA program and looking at where to go from here. I was a medic in the Army several years ago and my only major regret in life has been getting out of the Army. I have missed it almost everyday since I left. As I am finishing up my Master's program and looking to the future, I have looked at going back in the military. I have done some online researching, but have not found much related to careers in health care administration in the Army. I know that I could go and talk to a recruiter, and plan to soon, but would also like some insight from others as well. I guess I am just looking for what kind of jobs are out there and what admin is like in in the military. Again I realize this isn't a nursing specific question, but looking for any insight you all might have. Thanks! Mike

Family & Military Nursing
First off, I'm sure that this has probably been discussed multiple times on here, but after looking through like 10 or more pages, I didn't see what I was looking for, so sorry if this is a repeat question to many of you. My wife and I are both RNs, as well as prior service US Army. Me a medic and her a pharm tech. We have 2 boys who are currently 12 (as of today) and 9. As you can imagine, with both of us going through Nursing school at somewhat overlaping time periods, we incurred quite a lot of student loan debt. Now 4+ (for me) and 1 (for her) years post school, we are questioning if we made the right choices because we are being crushed by our student loan debt, and in a worse off spot than we were all those years ago, before starting this journey. Over that past six months or so we have been talking about ways to alleviate some of our debt, and being prior service, the military always seems to come up. Well we are looking at it again, but more seriously this time, and I am in need of some help with a few questions we have. 1.) If we do this, only one of us would be going in, and I guess my question is, who? I have the higher amount of debt, but she thinks that it would be better for her to go in than me. Anyone have any insight or thoughts on this? 2.) What is the work/home life balance like as a military RN. Is it similar to civilian nursing. We were thinking that whoever doesn't go in could work contingent somewhere to be able to be home with the kids more. 3.) Pay wise, with base pay and bha, is it at all comparable to the civilian side. I am not delusional and understand that we wouldn't make as much, but how bad are we talking. 4.) Do you get any say in where you get stationed? I know this is probably a stupid question, but I told my wife I would ask. 5.) Since we were both young and single with no kids when we were in the military, we had no need to learn about any services that they offer for families. So any help there would be appreciated. 6.) I guess lastly I was just looking for some personal experiences from RNs in the military with families and what your experiences have been. We are so torn over this, but we know we have to do something and right now this is seeming like one of our better options. Last couple of things (sorry for the long post), I am a peds ICU RN and she is adult Cardiac ICU, if that helps at all. We have already discussed the whole deployment thing and realize that it is a real possibility and have factored that into our interest. Thanks to everyone for reading and I greatly appreciate any help or advice you might have to offer.

I see a lot of people talking about the Koi, but unfortunately they don't make them in the color I need (Royal). Anyone have any thoughts on greys anatomy vs dickies sandwashed? Thanks for any help.

Interview Question!!!
So I am a new grad and recently passed my boards. I have been applying for jobs like crazy and finally got a couple of interviews. About two weeks ago I interviewed for my DREAM job at the local childrens hospital in the PICU. The interview went really well, and about a week later I called the Unit manager to follow up. She told me that even though she was not supposed to be talking to me about it, she had identified me as the candidate she wanted and HR was checking references and such. It has been about a week since then so I email HR to see what was going on, and got a response that all my references had been checked and she had notified the unit manager. She then said that it was HER understanding that the unit manager wanted to wait until all new grad interviews had been completed before she made her final decision, and interviews would probably continue through the end of the month. My question is what should I do now. I am kinda confused. The unit manager calls me and tells me she has chosen to hire me, and now HR is telling me that she is gonna wait to finish her interviews. Do you think there is a disconnect between the manager and HR or she just changed her mind? And should I try contacting the unit manager personally again and see what she has to say? Thanks in advance for all your responses.
