  1. As a current nurse in the Navy Nurse Corps I can give you a little information. Your experience will help you a great deal if you join because you don't have to do as much orientation and can just start work faster....which means you can work your way up to leadership positions more quickly as well. As far as going to CRNA school you would have to wait until your first tour was up, so about 3-4 years depending on your committment when you sign. In the Navy you have to go to USUHS in Bethesda, MD and then do clinicals at the one of the "Big Three" Naval Medical Centers - Bethesda, Jacksonville or San Diego. It's a great program, and competitve, but the good news is that it's all military so you're not competing with civilian RNs. Acceptance rates are the same as civilian programs....because there are less applicants, but also less spots. As far as the "critical care" Navy Nurse Corps, there is no such thing. But I'm assuming you mean you know you'll be able to work as a critical care nurse in the Navy, which is great. Congrats to you.
  2. I graduated last december, but I cut it close (graduated the 19th). The application deadline last year was December 22nd. Just call the nursing admissions office. They're really helpful and they'll let you know how/what to do. Good Luck!
  3. It's true. UNC-CH did not require or accept any recommendations for my application for the accelerated program starting summer 2010.
  4. Ok Panera it is. I'll PM you again to exchanged e-mail addresses/cell numbers. And the same thing happened with my PID number. Apparently it takes UNC undergrad a few days to convert us in the computer system. I got my letter from undergrad on a Friday and was not able to create an ONYEN account until tuesday. I'm not sure about the text books because right now I can't even see if I'm registered for classes. I know we get automatically registered for classes, but I'm not sure where I'm supposed to see there or if it's been done yet.
  5. No worries! I'm definitely still up for breakfast/brunch. And that sounds great. I can meet you at one of the restaurants near the station.
  6. For the OSHA training we have to do 1. bloodborne pathogens 2. tuberculosis and infection control 3. healthcare worker/JCAHO safety info. You have to score above a 70 on each section. Then you e-mail [email protected] saying when you completed the online course or you can fax a copy of the completion certificate to them. You need to mail in the background check payment (40 dollars) and then UNC Nursing School will run the background check on their own. The AHA-BLS is offered through the school of nursing. Cost is 60 bucks and they have 4 different dates to choose from. .....I would recommend calling the school of nursing and asking them about your concerns since you just found out and some of the deadlines may have already passed. They're more than willing to help. Congrats on the acceptance!
  7. Durham is great! When I was down in Chapel Hill 2 weeks ago I was shopping for places to live and really liked it. I would definitely be able to meet for either breakfast or brunch that Saturday. We'll just have to pick a place and I can travel wherever if you know of any good places. Otherwise...downtown Silver Spring has a pretty good selection. And as for the facebook group, apparently you have to have UNC-CH listed as one of your networks. I can't do that yet because I haven't even gotten a letter from undergrad admissions so I can't make a UNC e-mail address or anything like that. But if you have UNC e-mail then I'm pretty sure all you need to do is list UNC as a network and then you can join the group. Hope that helps!
  8. I made a copy of my reply form.....April 6 pre-orientation is from 5-7pm. It doesn't have the location, but when I was there it was in Fox Auditorium in the new wing of Carrington Hall. I'm pretty sure that's where all of the sessions are being held.
  9. The science section was pretty straightforward, but there were a couple random questions about rock formation type things (definitely caught me off guard). Other than the the science section was not so bad. Math was not very difficult at all either. The grammar section was straightforward as well. If you have the Nursing School Entrance Exam books and have been going over them I'm sure you'll do great! (even if you weren't looking over those books you'd still be good to go!)
  10. No problem! And...I was definitely glad to see someone else from DC was going to be down there! It would be great to get together. Right now I work full-time during the week, but during the weekends the only thing I do is shop for apartment stuff/try and get organized for the move. I got an apartment in Poplar Place down in Carrboro, NC and am moving some stuff down April 23-25. I won't move down completely probably until May 5 or 6 (I'm working right up until I have to leave because I'm definitely going to need the money haha). What about you? When are you moving down?
  11. To be honest I didn't use any study manual. But a brush-up on basic math and science is recommended. The nursing school entrance exam study guide may help as there are a few questions that are pretty specific (and I couldn't remember from highschool/basic college courses). Don't be anxious though, it's not bad at all!
  12. Pre-orientation went well. We just got the basic overview and everything. I was one of the few ABSN people there lol. All I can say is make sure you get that safety, legal and compliance checklist done! They were very clear about needing that! But the real orientation is May 10 (day before classes). I'm excited to start :) Oh and the TEAS test.....was not very difficult at all, just FYI.
  13. oh and it's probably better to contact school of nursing directly. they're pretty well organized and can direct you to wherever you need to go based on the questions you have.
  14. My reply form said I had until March 31st to accept the offer. Not sure if that was universal or just depended on when people's letters were sent out. My letter was dated March 19th and I didnt receive it until the 26th so I'm not sure if March 31st was the deadline for everyone to reply/confirm their spot.
  15. I got mine on Friday too and I'm from Silver Spring, MD. For everyone who hasn't received anything yet, I went to the pre-orientation session this past monday and the director of admissions at nursing basically said she didn't expect many of the ABSN people to be at the session because she knew that many of the letters had not gone out yet. I'm sure you'll all be hearing very very soon!
