I completely agree with your statement, Azdream'n....everything you said was right on.... The only thing that I haven't read in a single one of these posts is this: if the patient was truly suffering from a mental illness,and wasn't of sound mind...why didn't someone step in (anyone, a doctor, a family member) and have a stat psych consult done on her, and BAKER ACT the woman? If you are a threat to yourself or others (in this case, the babies) and do not act rationally...this is always an option. She could have at least been monitored, possibly developed a "rapport" with a medical professional (for those of you that assumed no medical staff was caring or kind to this woman) and the whole outcome could have changed. I've seen pregnant patients Baker Acted before, so I know it can be done!!! Hindsight really IS 20/20.

Hi everyone... For those of you that work PACU, perhaps you can be of assistance to me....I work at a small hospital in Florida in Labor and Delivery. We do our own C/Sections and recover patients in our own PACU. Here's my question: our nurse manager is well aware of the fact that: A. There is only ONE person in recovery (even though I truly belive there is a state law in Florida that TWO people must be present in recovery due to a case that took place about 7 years ago where a male nurse was molesting patients that were incoherent) and B. most of the nurses recovering these patients (myself included) do NOT have ACLS nor do we have even a basic EKG training under our belts...in other words, we were told (and I QUOTE) "just put "yes" in the box that asks for the cardiac monitor dx" (as in, yes, they're on a monitor, but I have no friggin' idea what it says!) I am very nervous about this whole situation....and feel as though my manager is just trying to save a few bucks to make the budget look better (by not staffing the recovery room and not properly training the staff) when in the long run, I could be in jeapordy of losing my license, couldn't I??? I even asked my manager if she would "allow" me to take off a few Fridays so I could attend the one and only EKG course offered at my hospital and she told me no!! I sure don't want MY family having a baby where I work!! Any help is appreciated. Thanks! :uhoh21:

I work at a small(er) hospital in Florida, and L&D nurses circulate and recover patients in our own PACU. I understand there is a LAW that is in effect that TWO people must be present in a recovery room (one being an RN, the other person with a pulse only) due to the fact a patient was molested about seven years ago in a recovery room. When I first started at this hospital, I questioned the nurse manager, and she blew me off...stating "oh what's the difference if you're alone with a patient in PACU or their room later, you don't need two people in recovery" Also...many, many of us nurses have absolutely no training in reading a monitor...and I was told to put "yes" on the line that states "cardiac monitor" (when it's looking for a rhythm diagnosis, such as NSR, or ST) I told my manager that I have no idea what the monitor says, and she told me that she would not pay to have me take a course to be qualified in reading a monitor. I sure wouldn't want my sister having a baby at MY hospital. Is my license in jeapordy here with these two incidents??? Anyone? Thanks!

You work in labor and delivery and don't know the "TYPE"????!! C'mon! lol...:rotfl: The "type" that come in with a 15 page birthing plan with all these wondeful, but very specific requests... they are DOOMED for a c/section, no if, ands or buts!!!

I worked for Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando for a little over four years...I love this hospital, and hope to return someday. It's an excellent teaching hospital and very geared toward educating its staff and nurses. They recently added a Ronald McDonald house, and have broken ground on a brand-new, state-of-the-art hospital for women and children. Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hey Funny Girl... I worked for Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, and did telephone triage for about a year there...the program is called "Tel-e-kids" and the nurse manager's name is Debi, who is a wonderful person to work for (I had to leave for a daytime only position on another unit) Hope this helps!
