  1. No, not my final. Wish it were that simple!
  2. Oh, trust me, you do not! This is about as opposite as it comes with his teaching style!!! He lectures on our textbook, assigns readings from it, then uses a different, much higher level text to write our tests-very difficult! So much so that everything he does leaves the other faculty members in an uproar, and the Dean is getting involved now too!
  3. I honestly am not sure what direction he wants us to take-this is so far off what he normally teaches, discusses, etc.! I'm leaning towards our curent environment having such a strong effect on our bodies with the onslaught of carcinogens, foreign chemicals, horrible diet, lack of exercise, constant stress that we (our bodies) are constantly in one form of a feedback loop or another in so many systems and on so many different levels and then giving specific examples of each. Does this sound like its in the ballpark or am I completely off?
  4. Seriously, this is an essay question from my A&P class! What is functionally wrong with the idea that homeostasis maintains the constancy of the internal environment? How constant is the internal environment? Is constancy important, or is there another term that better describes what the various regulatory systems achieve? Okay, I've googled until my fingers bled (okay, not that far) and I can find NOTHING on this side of the topic! Ideas? Insights? HELP!
  5. Super! I will definitely be taking a look since I'm actually using that book this fall! What school are you at?
  6. I am not a nurse-yet :), but I have a 4 year old and a 1 year old. My pedi advised to offer a sippy cup when they are introduced to cereal (with a spoon-NOT in a bottle!). Her explanation was that 1. getting them used to drinking from cup, not breast/bottle 2. they are beginning to decrease breastmilk/formula consumption, thus needing water 3. it helps to wash down the cereal/aid in digestion. Like I said, I'm not yet a nurse, but this was my personal experience with two babies of my own!
  7. Thanks to all who responded! I am still finishing pre-reqs right now. Teaching, I prob. spent AT LEAST $200/month on classroom items alone, not counting dry cleaning, etc. That was just bulletin boards, books, supplies, snacks, materials for lessons, etc. And most was not tax deductible, since I didn't meet some minimum standard to itemize. Good to know what I've got down the road!
  8. I am just starting my second career journey into nursing. I was an elementary school teacher for 11 years before I decided I needed to pursue nursing. I also had a lot of continuing job related expenses that really added up-every single year. What job expenses do you have as a nurse? How much equipment/supplies do you have to supply yourself? After reading some threads on scrubs, it appears they are much cheaper than having a professional wardrobe-and no dry cleaning! I know this may seem petty but I like to really have an idea of what I get to look forward to. Thanks!
  9. I can't stand the thought of being away from my kiddos and family that many hours (with studying!), but I keep telling myself the payoff in the longrun will be worth it. Though I'm not sure my heart is believing it right now! I'm only taking one class right now and to say its been difficult is an uderstatement-but I also have no child care (2 small kids) and my husband works crazy shift work to barely make ends meet, so we really have no choice but to plow through and take one day at a time!
  10. I needed to read this also. My hubby has a very demanding career and he's all but refused to do housework when I was working full time before. (Now I'm a SAHM to a 4 and 1 year old, waiting to get into NS). So this will basically all be on me, but if a single mom can do this...so can I !!!
  11. I'm actually doing A&P1 online now and 2 in the fall. We meet 2 times a semester for the dissection part of labs, the rest we do through aprevealed.com. That's an incredible program. I think its probably harder online than in person, but its easier for me since I choose when I study around my family's schedule. You def. have to be disciplined, but I like it. (Plus we can speed up our prof's lecture!)
  12. And what makes this either easier or more challenging is that its all online! I've never handled a bone (though I could go into the lab) and the practical is images on a computer test! I have the websites for the sources of the images, but how do I go about using ALL those images to remember?? (its images from ap revealed for skull and all the rest are off 3 professors' power points to teach the lab, so LOTS of images!)
  13. I know this is just the beginning, but sheesh! I simply can't keep these straight! I've got power points (where our computer test images are coming from), ap revealed, textbook, 2 lab manuals to look at. I've (tried) drawing and labeling my own, made multiple copies of lab figures to label over and over and over again, done many online activities....anything else I could try???
  14. Wow....thanks! DH is a homicide detective, and when he gets called to a scene, he could be gone for 20+hours! I might not even know until he's 5 or more hours over his shift end time. He also works weekends and holidays as well. He makes more than me and carries the benefits, and I'm hoping after 2 or 3 years to either work part time or just on call, mainly so I can be at home more. I can't really see having my kids out of thier own house that many hours, even 2 or 3 days a week so I think the nanny might be best, but some weeks I might not need one, some for 3 days, and others woiuld be very last minute. Any ideas on how to handle that??
  15. For those of you with young children, what do you do for child care when your spouse isn't able to watch them? My husband's schedule is totally unpredictable and when I start working, my oldest will be in 1st grade, and my youngest will be in a part time preschool. Pretty much all the hospitals in the area work 7-7 shifts (which is where I'll probably start out in). I am still going through the prerequisit classes but am thinking into the future here, wondering if I need to rethink some things. How do you balance child care with such crazy hours?
  16. I had heard the differences before, made up my mind to go straight through the RN program, but now am wondering if I can remain unemployed that long. (No, holding down a job isn't an option for my family while I'm in school.) Now, I'm wondering what the difference in pay, schooling, and job responsibilities are. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks!
  17. I was thinking I could get by without one, but since I'm doing this all online, I need to get a kinesthetic learning modality involved in learning. (I've discovered this as I'm skimming the bones.) While we have APRevealed (excellent program), I need something more. I looked at several at Barnes & Noble the other day, but was wondering if any were better than others? Any suggestions?
  18. To make a long story short, I will be starting nursing as a second career. The opportunity to do this was kind of thrown at me and I jumped, without looking. Now I feel (mid-air) like I should have looked before I leaped! I'm only finishing pre-reqs now, but its been so long since I really looked into nursing and what it REALLY is. Pretty much all I go by on now is what I've experienced in my life-giving birth to two children, and a husband who had hand surgery. So tell me what YOU wished you knew about nursing as a career when you started NS.
  19. Hello! I've just decided to change careers and pursue a long time dream of going into medicine, nursing specifically. However, I've recently become interested in holistic nursing. Can someone please explain the differences between traditional nursing/RN and holistic nursing? Thanks!
  20. To make an incredibly long story short, over Christmas, my parents offered to pay for me to go back to school for my ADN, and offered to help care for my 2 small children. I alredy have my BS in elementary education, but after working in it for 11 years, don't even want to think of continuing ever again. My husband is a police officer-very long, unpredictable shifts, not a lot of money. We had just gotten used to me being at home, and living on one income, barely squeaking by. I have always loved medicine, and was pre-med for the first 2 years in college, then switched to elementary ed. Knowing I will have to return to full time work one day (probably sooner rather than later) I decided to jump on my parents' offer. I signed up in Jan. for my first class-A&PI on line. I have spent over 40 hours a week studying for this ONE class, to make a C on my first exam. (I have to have an A for NS). My husband doesn't really like me going to school, and working again, but admits that we will need 2 incomes in the near future. He has also just transfered departments and started working nights. My dad has decided my husband needs to help more, sleep less and so tries to watch the kids less than I expected. My husband isn't helping, the house is not getting taken care of, I'm not having much luck with one class, and I'm hearing how bad nursing school is. If my life is getting this messy a month into one pre-req class, what will it be like with NS? I've still got 5 pre-reqs to finish by the end of this fall, and am already feeling defeated. I would love to be a nurse, have been told I'll be an excellent nurse, but am so doubting this right now....anyone else go through this or have advice?
  21. Nope not PVCC. But I do have a prof. who tests very unfairly and gives you absolutely NO IDEA what the test will cover. His objectives don't match the exam. He says he's using pics from the website, but honestly, we would not be surprised if he used other random ones. Our test over ch. 1-3 (holes) was only 48 questions! And our practical only has 90! Anyways, that's a good way of breaking the tissues down and looking at them-THANK YOU!!!
  22. We have been given the slides that we (think) will be used on our lab practical. Its all online so the slides will come off our school's biology website. However, I'm having the hardest time remembering for the 20+ slides, what each is, where they're found, and what the function is. How did you all remember all this info? Our practical has to be taken by Monday, Feb. 22. Thanks!
  23. I'm taking an online hybrid A&PI class. We meet in person twice for labs and have 4 days to take each of 4 scheduled tests. We have tons of online activities, etc to use and we are expected to listen to his recorded lectures and view the relevant ppt for each chapter. My question is this: stay at his pace (ch. 1 last week, ch. 2 for the next 5 days, then ch.3, etc) and just review previous material until I'm comfortable I've got it or just go on my own pace the whole time, mastering material before I move on, but be sure I'm where I need to be at each exam time? Ch. 1 has so much material, and I've got about 50% of it, but he's already lectured on half of ch.2 . We have 3 weeks from now for our first lecture exam. Also, what's the best way to study? Flashcards? I've heard putting a copy of photos/diagrams with blank labels in sheet protectors and using dry erase markers/stickynotes to cover answers. What worked/didn't for you to get all this material down?
