  1. I was hired!! I was waiting until I got the "official" offer, although they told me Monday all my details. They were going to fill the position with an employee referral, and then the director got my message that I came by and she missed me. Because I came in person, she pulled my app and read through my resume etc and decided to hire me before she even called me to come interview. I left the interview (which was really more like an orientation) and got a call as soon as I got in my truck for another offer, which I had to decline. Then yesterday I got another one! DON'T be discouraged! Get dressed up and go in person straight to the director of the department you want to work. It landed me 4 interviews and so far 3 job offers! I was supposed to get a call by the end of the week for the 4th. I know Orange County Global Medical Center had a lot of positions posted for MedSurg if you are interested in that. Now you have an employee referral! (Jose de Armas) Careers | Orange County Global Medical Center
  2. Congratulations! I'm glad you got what you wanted! I also was hired! I was called Thursday for a trauma ER I stopped in at and they asked me to interview yesterday. The interview was basically my orientation. They said they almost filled the spot with an employee referral, then then she got my message that I stopped in. She pulled my resume and decided to hire me before she called me! Stopping in works!!
  3. That's too bad. Thanks for the heads up! I am getting ready to walk into an interview right now with Orange County Global Medical Center, formerly Western Medical Center Santa Ana, for ER. I actually have a couple other interviews scheduled as well. Do you have anything else going?
  4. I am also a new grad. I put in easily 100 apps everywhere and didn't hear anything for 2 months. I called HR and nurse recruiters and that got me a great response, but all the big medical centers swallowed up BSN new grads and said they won't even entertain ADN. (You have a BSN, so maybe that will work for you) So I put on a suit and tie and went to the hospitals that I had apps at. I went to HR first and asked for the nurse recruiter and spoke with them, a fresh resume, cover letter, references, and copy of my certs and license in hand. Talked to them and said I applied online but wanted to follow up in person because this is a personable business. They appreciated it very much. After leaving their office I went straight to the department(s) I applied for and asked to speak with the director. I brought them a copy of the previously listed paperwork, and said I had applied online and spoke with HR, but I know how many apps they get and I didn't want to get lost within all of that, and I wanted to follow up in person, meet them, and see if there is anything further I could provide, all the while mentioning how great their facility was and how much working there means to me. Out of the 5 hospitals I went to, I had 2 interviews right then and there, and I have 3 more scheduled. So that got me an interview at EVERY stop I made. They were all VERY impressed that I would come in like that, how professional I handled it, how I brought them all the resume etc. I also had my complete portfolio in hand in case I ended up interviewing right there, which turned out to be a good idea. They said they never have new grads do that, and they were very appreciative of it. Now I take my interviews and see what turns into an offer. One of the ones I already interviewed, the ED Director said he would put me in the next new grad program, but that isn't until November, so that is on the back burner. Make a different resume and cover letter for each facility, and work the hospital's mission statement into your objective on your resume. Also put in that you are seeking a position as a Registered Nurse in the ____ department at ____ medical center/hospital. Work that last part into your cover letter as well. Always apply online first, because they will just direct you to there if you haven't already done that. But if you say I applied online, and wanted to come in person and bring you my resume and meet you, they may just like that and pull your app to get it in the right direction. Remember, a nurse recruiter is in charge of putting nurses in front of the department manager and director, the manager and director make the final decision on who they hire. Sometimes a couple managers weed through what the recruiter brings and the director makes the decision. So make the recruiter your friend, then go to the department director and do the same. You want to personally talk to everyone involved in the decision to make you a nurse. People always say they aren't brave enough to do this. It's all about confidence. Good luck!
  5. No too bold at all! That is a great start. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. By contacting her it shows her how interested you are, and you aren't just another electronic app within a few hundred or more. See if she responds and what happens. Build up the courage and go in there! It WILL help! Good luck!
  6. I am a new grad as well. I agree talking with the physician that doesn't personally know you would not be a good idea. I put in 100 apps everywhere and didn't hear anything for 2 months. I called HR and nurse recruiters and that got me a great response, but all the big medical centers swallowed up BSN new grads and said they won't even entertain ADN. One of the ones I already interviewed, the ED Director said he would put me in the next new grad program, but that isn't until November, so that is on the back burner. Show face, walk into that hospital and go to the oncology floor and ask for the director. Bring your resume and all that, and have a portfolio if you don't already. Good luck!!!
  7. I haven't read through all this, I will just to see if there are scrubs I am missing out on, haha. But My favorite pair that I have seen and own are my Carhartt ripstop scrubs. Extremely durable, well fitting, and have a great cut and a heavy, manly look to them. Check out the link (can I post this?) : Scrubs | Carhartt US
  8. I just made that same switch. I started as a mechanic and fabricator at 15, worked for BMW dealer then opened my own hotrod shop. I went to UTI at 18 but no other college. At 23 I became an EMT on an ambulance and loved it. I went back to cars for a couple years after relocating and EMT pay was horrible. At 28 I went to a private accelerated ADN program and just graduated in May at the age of 30 with my RN. I think the mechanic background was a huge advantage in terms of critical thinking, diagnostics, and just basic mechanics of how things work like hydraulics etc. People don't really think about associating the 2 until you bring all these points up. Get your EMT and go work in a hospital. I did Ambulance because I was planning on fire fighting but fell in love with the medical aspect. Get a taste for that side of it while you do the pre reqs. Stay at your job and do EMT part time if you have to. Nursing is a great career, so many routes you can take. I have 4 interviews now and am excited to continue on to DNP CRNA, which is my ultimate goal. Good luck!
  9. This may be long, but I want to give you all the info I am a new grad with my ADN. Southern California (Riverside/Orange County/San Diego area). My BSN starts on Sunday with West Coast University online. I thought starting the BSN would be ok for those hospitals that are already magnet or going magnet. Not so, they all say they have so many applicants with BSN and MSN degrees they can be picky. So that threw the big guys out the window as a new grad for me. UCI told me to get a year experience and my BSN and come back and apply as an experienced nurse, which they all want. My goal is to become a CRNA as soon as I can. I plan to get my BSN, and 2 years critical care experience and start to apply. I know longer is better, but why not try if I meet the qualifications. Soooo, Specialty ICU is best, then ICU, then ER especially if it is a trauma center and well known. So I have apps out EVERYWHERE. Probably 100 apps. I haven't heard anything for over a month. I have called HR and the recruiters, told they will pull me app, then they disappear. So I got a call out of the blue from an ER director about a night FT position (very small ER and is a psych receiving facility). I interviewed with him, and am awaiting him to complete his other interviews by next week. I was excited to have something, even though it wasn't exactly what I wanted. Then on the way home, the sky fell. I got an email from an ICU director where I did my clinicals telling me he wants me to come interview and will call me to schedule it. Then, I stopped at another hospital that a friend of mine is an RN in the OR. HR was impressed with my appearance, portfolio, and certs, and walked me straight to the Nursing Recruiter. She was also impressed, and when I told her about my friend referring me, she said that goes a long way and put a post it note on my resume that said "employee referral and the person's name." She said she meets with the hiring managers early next week and will personally give them this and let them know I am an employee referral with my license in hand and a slew of certs. This would be for an ER new grad program. I get home, and get another call from a well known level II trauma center ER director, which I stopped to see and she wasn't there so I left her a message saying I was standing in her lobby etc etc. She said she was so sorry she missed me and she got my resume etc, and asked me to come interview Monday at 11am, which I obviously accepted. Dilema breakdown Option 1: Small ER, 63 mile drive, $36-38hr, night shift Option 2: Trauma ER, 63 mile drive, $36-38hr, night shift Option 3: Basic ICU, 67 mile drive, $30hr, day shift Option 4: ER new grad program, 39 mile drive, $31 starting/$34-36 after 90 days, day shift I really do not care about the distance. I just want to be realistic about the time I will be driving and how much that really means I make per shift because of travel. I REALLY do not want to work nights, but $6+ and hour could be $1000 a month after OT. The one thing about the ICU position is I know TONS of people at that hospital, and especially the anesthesia team. They are very supportive of me and will continue to be. I could still be in contact with them if I were somewhere else, it just seems I may have more contact if I worked at that facility. The most lucrative and keeps me on days would be option 4, but isn't the best for experience toward CRNA. I would enjoy the work at option 2 the most, but I don't know if it is the best to get me to my goal. I also am thinking about using these as experience to get me to UCI in the SICU or another specialty ICU, then work there for a year before applying to anesthesia programs. I don't know which to choose if they all turn in to offers, and what to do if one offers me a position and I really am holding out for one of the others. Any and all advice is MUCH appreciated! Sorry that was so long. Again, I wanted to give all the information so it is all clear what I have in front of me.
  10. You're welcome! I figured you were stressing since calls didn't go out and today is 2 weeks. Fingers crossed.
  11. No call yet. Spoke with HR today and she told me they haven't gotten to any calls at all yet. Keep looking for it!
  12. Wow, I thought the first couple hours would have been packed. That's good news for us! They said they will discuss pay during the interviews. I will definitely post if I get a call.
  13. I also received that paper. From what she told me on Monday, it sounded as if they were a little behind on getting through everything, and wanted to get it all done by the deadline. I assume calls will go out this week. Was it busy at 9am? I went after work and got there at 11. There were only 3 others the whole time I was there. Good luck to you. Hopefully some other applicants will post on here. Let me know if you get a call! Good luck to you! Do you know anything about the starting pay?
  14. I applied. I have not gotten a call for an interview. I did speak with the nursing recruiter on Monday to ask her about updating a couple of things on my application. She told me they had not gone through everything yet and they wanted to make decisions for interviews very soon. I emailed her Wednesday with the updates and she replied but did not mention any time frame. I heard 2 weeks from someone else. I am also curious to hear when people get called for interviews. What time were you there filling the app out?
