  1. Working Part Time and Full Time?

I have done it also but it always depends on my home situation. When I started having kids, I felt I had two full time jobs. Now with 4 kids I just hold two part time jobs and have the best of both worlds.
  2. Experience taking care of the elderly

One thing I always remember is never try to reorient the resident to "My world" or the present. I always try to step into theirs. I'll be their daughter, neighbor, whoever they think I am. I wouldn't trade working with the geriatric population for...
  3. would you be mad at your CNA?

I would not be mad at the CNA but I think checking the O2 sat yourself would set you up for liability if you did not report the situation. I know in this case that did not happen. I would prefer you interuppted my care plan meeting, let me evaluate...
  4. Med Errors

I had a physician increase my Tenormin from 25 mg to 100mg. This for a 37y/o female with recently diagnosed high blood pressure. Luckily, I realized this was the cause of my crushing chest pain and a pulse of 37.
  5. LN co-worker needs to be terminated

If the facility you work at is part of a larger corporation, call the compliance hotline. The call is confidential and be sure to mention the abusive behavior. They are required to followup on hot line calls.
  6. Difficult resident

This is certainly a behavior that needs to be tracked and care planned. I would plan an interdisciplinary team meeting including the family and resident and make a plan and then stick too it. Maybe offer 3 times then destroy and mark as refused. B...
  7. When physician's act up/out

TracyB, I might have walked over to the phone, dialed 911, and had the police called for violence. See how he likes having that written up in the paper!!!!!
  8. Munchausen's??

Don't discount the fact that she may in fact have some underlying medical disorder that is causing these "strange" symptoms. I mean, she does in fact have abnormal labs and EKGs. These are kinda hard to fake. I would just caution you to not let y...
  9. How ambitious are you?

I think I am quite ambitious. I am 38, BSN, went into the military at 18, got my ADN as a single parent of two kids, later went back to BSN school shortly thereafter, finished my BSN courses 1 week after delivering my 4th child. Now I work 2 jobs w...
  10. Is LTC really this bad?

Lizz, completely off topic I know but I just love your little rock band. What song are they singing? I think it is Jump by Vanhalen
  11. Long term care nursing

I agree there are no typical days but there are some routines to get used to, like on day shift I know I will have 2 med passes, 2 meals, and treatments. Everything else unpredictable I squeeze in around.
  12. LTC position- 100 % of patients are cognitively

I would expect a position like this to be very mentally challenging but fun. I love the confused elderly and every day I work at the LTC is a day of fun with lots of stories to tell.
  13. Staff RNs in LTC

Cape Cod Mermaid, I have to respectfully disagree with you. I find time to spend one on one time with my residents. Yes I am always busy with meds and treatments but it is during this time that I spend one on one. I sit next to the resident while...
  14. acute care to LTC

Work in a skilled unit in LTC. I do think it is important to keep up your nursing skills in LTC. Just don't avoid LTC because your afraid your nursing skills will become stale. Do whatever it takes to keep up on your skills. LTC is such a wonderf...
  15. my favorite resident

Like anyone I also have many favorites. Let's see........"Lillian" is a lady who calls me "sweetie" (there are very few people I allow to call me a pet name. Personally I don't believe in pet names.....sorry another thread). She is elegant, convers...
  16. Alzheimer's issues

Take a few minutes to review your own actions and how you approach the residents. You may be doing something inadvertently to provoke a violent response. If a resident is doing something you would rather he not do just remember "is it hurting anyth...
  17. Dementia Patients

What I have learned is never try to make them return to this world. You step into theirs. If a resident is looking for their kitty, I'll help look. Is a 90 y/o woman is waiting for her mom to pick her up I simply tell her "I'll keep my eyes open a...
  18. To all of you who quit......Congrats Is it wrong of me to be a nurse and be overweight? What about drink alcohol? And how is this different than smoking. I, by the way, am a non-smoker. I don't like it when people smoke, especially around me. Bu...
  19. What's you highest...?

My 1 week old daughter had a bilirubin of 31 before she was admitted under bili lights. I am told that was the highest they had at this hospital.
  20. Okay, it's "weekly summary" time !

We have weekly summary sheets that prompt us on what to chart. Much of it is check off and the only narrative is charting what has changed since the previous weekly summary. On most patients that is nothing so the charting is real easy.
  21. Why don't they like part-time nurses?

One reason I have seen that LTC doesn't like part timers is because it is hard to keep them up to date on inservices. For instance, if an inservice falls on your day off you may not feel motivated to come in. That aside, I would seriously reconsider...
  22. A short list about bully behaviors

I work with a bully. It seems if she doesn't see you as an "equal" then she bullies you to the point of leaving. What I find amazing is administration doesn't seem to see it. I mean lots of good staff are leaving because they are tired of being tr...
  23. Labor, birth and spectators

This seems like a bigger issue than just who should be in the delivery room. I bet if boiled down it is about control. You've probably spent your entire marriage argueing about the MIL. I would recommend an outside party (counselor) since this is ...
  24. Misdiagnosed in the ER :(

I imagine they are mixed up. Especially since the primary sxs are "red, hot, and swollen". Sounds like both to me.
  25. My name is Chim-Chim Apple Hiney

My husband and I are both Loopy Bubble Butt (me more so than him)
