How to cope as a new nurse
I just started as a night nurse on a pediatric floor. I was extremely motivated before and during nursing school to go into this profession and could not wait to start. I even accomplished graduating magna cum laude and got hired onto my "dream job." I am thankful for all of those things but now that I have been working for a few months I feel like this job is going to drive me into depression. I feel like I am always the bad guy to the parents since I look young and have to go into their rooms at night. Some of the nurses are a great resource but others expect much more out of me for someone who has been working for a couple months. I feel like I am on the verge of an anxiety attack every night and the day shift nurses always seem in a bad mood as I am giving report (if I don't know every little detail to a question it is like a did something horrible). I am just worried about changing into a different person and having my health be affected. Are all of these feelings normal as a new nurse? If so, how did you guys cope with them? I care so much for children and want to continue to do my part so they can grow healthy and strong, I just don't know how to find peace with the chaos that surrounds it.

Texas Children's Hospital
So latest update: my friend called today and they said they have not started interviewing yet and that they are currently sorting through applications. Unfortunately I guess this means they had a ton!

When I talked to someone who was a GN last summer she said she thinks they took about 50 GNs so I hope the same goes for this summer!

My friend called last Wednesday (5/2) to get some information and HR told her that they probably won't start calling people for another two weeks. So, I am assuming sometime next week we should hear, but I am sure they have so many applications to go through since last year they had over 900!

Yeah it is so hard to tell based on rank and NCLEX passing rates. For example, UT Austin is ranked highest in the state for their school, yet they definitely don't have the highest pass rates. I actually ended up finding the statistics for 2008 and 2009 (it just wasn't on their website) but it appears that each year it fluctuates per school. Each year the school with the highest pass rates changes and there are new bills being passed that allow more funding for nursing schools in Texas. But I agree with Jocelyn, I have had a much better experience with UTMB than anywhere else, I don't feel like a number to them. It also has great tuition and you have more choices for where you do your clinicals.

Well the only thing I can guess about the electives is that they automatically put that on your letter? I am in the same boat I am a Junior and have a ton of hours. It seems that they put some things automatically on there because I did my background check a long time ago but it still had it on the letter. I also haven't had my econnect change but I am sure it will soon. I just sent my acceptance sheet in today ahh!
