Nursing as a second career...am I doomed
You are correct. I was incorrectly under the impression that the RN was the associate degree and that the BSN was the bachelors degree. However, the community college I am looking at allows you to take the R.N. licensure exam after getting the associates, so I am still a bit confused. In either case I was advising he begin a community college program and then when the GPA met the correct requirements, that he transfer into a BSN with or without completing the community college degree. Its interesting to hear that the ADN will limit long-term potential though. Do you think it would even if he intended to get a BSN afterwords? Again, I am talking from relative ignorance since I have not done either.

Thanks, I tried to ask a specific question to avoid getting off topic. That worked wonderfully... lol

I am tired of this attitude
And this is relevant to my post how? I don't think 17 years of experience gives you the right to judge others or the ability to read their minds. No, you expressed it. That's what I was addressing. That means that if you were being sincere and not just bitter, you'd recognize that if you really cared, you'd be more inclined to help spark people's interest than turn people away. Let me know if I was not clear. No I will not trust you... Moreover, the market for nurses is far better than for most other careers. OK. You seem like a real people person. I can see how necessary it really is. Are you this nice with your patients?

Changing Careers to Nursing. Advice needed
I'm not going to say what I do for privacy reasons, but I want to get a degree in nursing because I'd rather working and not living off of loans than studying and depending on loans.

Changing Careers to Nursing. Advice needed
Several reasons. I think I will like nursing, the job market in nursing is better than in most fields, it has long term career potential if I do end up enjoying it, the skills I will learn will be valuable.. these reasons among other things.

Changing Careers to Nursing. Advice needed
Aaah thank you. That is what I suspected... that a CRNA program would require a good BSN. Again, that's not necessarily my goal, but I definitely want to keep the options open. I think part of my reason for exploring RN programs was in part because of doubts that I would get into the BSN program that I want. Anyways, thank again for the response.

I am tired of this attitude
So what exactly does the OP hate? That 'those people" have jobs? That those people want to be nurses but cannot succeed? That companies need those people to provide care? Is this something that needs to be hated? Call me insensitive, but if I wanted to help people, I'd want more people to be interested in healthcare than less. I think that this person simply may need to determine if he/she is really in the right career, because as far as I can tell, there is a high demand for all types and that demand will be met.

Thanks for the response. I'm definitely applying to BSN degrees. What disadvantages (if any)do you think there might be to getting an RN first? I'm definitely going to be applying to 2nd degree BSN degrees, but the cost savings by getting the RN just seem to be huge especially since I can work while I get the BSN afterwords.

Please describe my "type"? I would have hoped that a nurse would be a little more open minded but I guess not. What would your response be if I wanted to maximize tuition costs and stay in school as long as possible? Would your response be as bitter? Please, I'm looking for responses to my question, not to be judged unfairly.

Nursing as a second career...am I doomed
I know close to nothing about the career as I am switching myself, but you could easily overcome your low GPA by taking community college courses to raise it. in fact, I am considering getting an RN since it will allow me to become a nurse quicker than going to a one year BSN with a 14 month wait list. Maybe that option would be best for you. You can start taking classes immediately, get into an RN program, and then when you are ready apply to a BSN program. If you get your RN first you can even work while you get your BSN online. just a thought since that's what I am considering.

Changing Careers to Nursing. Advice needed
I am changing careers to nursing. I have a bachelors degree and will have a masters degree shortly in unrelated fields. I am now planning how to most quickly become a nurse while leaving options open for the ability to eventually get a good masters degree in nursing. So my goals are as follows: 1) get a nursing degree ASAP 2) have a good enough degree to eventually get into a Masters in anesthesiology or nursing informatics, as I am still undecided. 3) Keep costs low as possible So I am looking into 1 year accelerated BSN programs, but the cost and the wait lists are a huge turn off. I am therefore considering getting an RN, which will allow me to eventually get a BSN or maybe do an accelerated RN-MSN degree. So I'm looking for advice. Will the RN get me a job that can give me the time to get an online BSN? Will online BSNs allow me the option to go to a good graduate school? What do you suggest for someone in my position? Which would be the cheapest option towards a BSN. Again my goal is to become a nurse ASAP, however, the speed at which I move from an RN to a BSN is not quite as important as I can work while i pursue those degrees. Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Even if it seems irrelevant feel free to comment. Thanks in advance!
