  1. Yeah it's the same thing. Some bruises can be classified as either petechia, purpura or ecchymosis based on the size and dispersion of it, although they may be caused by different things. I think a lot of people are easily confused by all the terminology so maybe this applies to her as well : )
  2. Also, they're working on magnet status. I don't think it's a huge deal that they aren't at that level yet; but they are definitely working to get there.
  3. Hello! I actually just finished the UM ABSN program in May and I also received the full tuition scholarship. I just passed my NCLEX and start the residency August 1st. Like you, I'm also from far away (Michigan) and I just moved down here to go to school. It's definitely scary moving across the country to a place where you have to spend the next 4 years of your life but I can tell you from personal experience that it's well worth it! South Florida is awesome, and the fact that you don't need to worry about applying for a job is a plus. Overall, I've had some really great clinical experiences at UMH; the nurse managers/directors are nice and many of the nurses are great as well. From the employees I've spoken with they are all pleased with the hospital. They're currently working on re-doing the hospital and the new floors are gorgeous! Best of luck to you in the start of the program and let me know if you have any questions!
  4. Hey, for some reason it won't let me respond back via message so email me @ [email protected] so I can respond to your PM : )
  5. Hey everyone! I'm currently in the ABSN program right now getting ready to graduate in May, and I just wanted to say congrats to everyone on getting in. If anyone has any questions about the program, don't hesitate to ask. I know I was picking as many peoples brains before hand as I could! As for the scholarship, you can definitely do the FNP program part time while still fulfilling your 3 year commitment, you'll just have to take out loans/pay for it yourself Best of luck!
  6. Congrats on your acceptance!! I'm currently in the accelerated program at UM right now going into my final semester - woo hoo! It's going to be a very long, hard, rigorous year but is definitely worth it in the end (I hope!) Overall I like the program and the school a lot. Before starting the program I thought it was near impossible to learn enough to become a good nurse, but I can't even begin to explain how much I've learned - it's incredible. The classes are awesome, the teachers are amazing (for the most part). The only complaint I have is the administration - they are overall very rude and not very caring to the students, so it's important to stand up to them if you want something changed (strength in numbers!) As for working...definitely not. We had a couple students try and were either unsuccessful or their grades were lowered. Especially being that you'll be starting in the summer where the semester is only 10 weeks long is a killer - multiple quizzes or tests weekly - you won't have time. Second semester things are a little better; you aren't as busy. I worked 3 days a week for only 3 hours at a time caring for a quadriplegic and that wasn't so bad, so you may have time to squeeze something in, but don't overdo it. As for scholarships...the only one I really know of is the UM scholars program. You have to apply and it's very competitive but if you get it, they pay for your entire program, but in return you have to work at their hospital for 3 years. In my opinion it's totally worth it being that you come out with NO debt and a guaranteed job. Anyways, let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck with everything and be sure to rest up now while you can : )
  7. I was planning to go to an out of state school. So it was cheaper for me to go to a private university than a public one out of state.
  8. I'm at the University of Miami. The ABSN is $39,000 for 12 months, but it's a private university so it's a bit pricey! But if you're looking to go out of state (as I did) it ends up being cheaper :)
  9. I've heard the program is amazing. The professors are really great (from what I hear) and you get plenty of clinical time.. Clinicals are 2 days a week, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the first semester. Of course we need to cram a lot in, but the way that they teach you supposedly caters exactly to the NCLEX/HESI exams. As for financial aid, it sounds like most people are having to take out additional private loans to pay for costs...it's so expensive!! Looking forward to meet all of you in less than a month! And as for living...I just moved down last week and am living in downtown Miami and absolutely love it! It's a great location and is right across the street from the bay. There are a few other students living right around my apartment also. Others are living in Brickell but it's more expensive, and I think a few are living in South Miami. Let me know if you have any other questions, I can try to help!
  10. There's also direct entry master's programs for those with previous degrees, but that just depends on if you want to be an NP or not.
  11. You should definitely get a bachelor's...with jobs being far and few between for new grads, you need any advantage you should get. You should really check into an accelerated/second degree program - it's for people who have a previous degree. I'm actually starting an ABSN (accelerated) program in May at the University of Miami and I can't wait for it to start! I'll be done in 12 months :) Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!
  12. Also, from what I have heard from all the other people in the program, downtown Miami is going to be the most affordable. Brickell is a good area, but it's also more expensive, and Coral Gables is a rip off. So I think I'm going to try to focus more on the South Miami/Downtown Miami area :) I'm planning to head down in March to try to find an apartment and to check out the campus.
  13. Congrats Kimberly!! I'm so excited to meet you and everyone else! I am from Midland, MI - about an hour away from Flint. When are you planning to move down? If you haven't joined already, there is a facebook group for our program :) Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
  14. Gypsy, I got into the University of Miami ABSN, super pumped! What about you??
  15. I was also just accepted into an absn may 2010, so congrats! First semester two of the classes we take are pharmacology and pathophysiology, so i bought flashcards for each from barnes & noble to study at my own leisure before classes start..that way i'm familiar with the material in at least 2 of the classes. definitely focus on your home life, but maybe get some study material to stay ahead of the gang :) good luck!
